Conceiving in Bali - would you? Zika risk.

Does anyone know much about the Zika risk in Bali right now? I'll be travelling there with DH later this year and really wanted to kick off ttc there. Is this a stupid idea? The doctor has said there is a moderate level of risk. Would you take it? I can't bear the thought of waiting for 6 months after we return and telling DH we couldn't go would break his heart. He is ready to ttc but not as fussed about the timing.

Is it really worth the risk?

Trytowin · 22/05/2017 18:11

No way would I risk it, the zika is horrible and can have dire consequences. Not what you wanted to hear. 6months is a blip in time though it may not feel like it.

It might take a while but also it might not. For me I had implant removed with the view of TTC, I'm hideously overweight was trying to lose to help my miniscule chances and 'fell' in the second month of 'proper' trying. Dumb struck we were!

user76895432 · 22/05/2017 18:14

It's a romantic idea but really not worth the risk IMO.

HopeYourCakeIsShit · 22/05/2017 18:18

If the doctor has said there is a risk why would you take it.
Potentially horrendous consequences for an idealised romantic notion.

eurochick · 22/05/2017 18:40

No way would I take the risk.

JennyGreenteeth · 22/05/2017 18:53

I wouldn't risk it- imagine the worry if you did fall pregnant.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/05/2017 19:17

No way would I take the risk!

titchy · 22/05/2017 19:21

6 months wait vs a lifetime possibly looking after a child with severe special needs. Don't be so fucking stupid.

scaredofthecity · 22/05/2017 19:22

pregnancy anxiety is horrific and most of us get it. Even if the risk is small it is not worth it for your mental health. It will ruin your pregnancy worrying what if?
plus the potential effects of zika are horrible and must not be underestimated.
just no way!

Wolfiefan · 22/05/2017 19:22

Why would you? Wait the six months or don't go.
6 months vs a lifetime. Not long really.

ScarletForYa · 22/05/2017 19:24

Never in a million years would I take that risk.

Justanotherusername99 · 22/05/2017 19:35

I understand why you want to start in Bali and I also understand why you don't want to wait 6 months after you get back, but it is worth being sensible and not TTC while you're out there. I don't know much about it, but I'm sure previous posts have mentioned that you can have tests done on your return to the UK to check whether you have been infected. If you are desperate to start trying on your return, it may be worth looking into have this test done.

Is there any scope to start TTC now and if you fall pregnant, go somewhere other than Bali/infected areas? Then if you don't fall pregnant you can still go to Bali but halt TTC while you're there and until you know you're 'clear'.

meow1989 · 22/05/2017 20:53

For us it was too big a risk -we had booked a once in a life time type holiday in Barbados but wanted to start ttc on return. I spoke to my dr and she advised not to go if we want to start ttc within a year.

The idea of waiting the official 6 months seemed like such long time for me although DH was more open to the idea but in the end we just felt that there are far too many unknowns with Zika.

Was a really upsetting decision but as soon as we cancelled I felt instantly reassured and now we've booked a 5 star week away in Europe instead which we can't wait for

HbH · 22/05/2017 21:02

We booked Thailand for our honeymoon in Jan and were then devastated to find out there was zika there as we wanted to try for a honeymoon baby!

Luckily we found out about a private bloodtest you can pay for 21 days after exposure. Even though it was expensive (£326) & we only got one bite between us we didn't think twice about having it done! Results came in 7-10 days and being negative we were free to TTC!

(Just had my 12 week scan today!)

Test was through London Doctor's Clinic... quite a few clinics around london & actually cheaper than the ones local to us. Highly recommend Smile

We wanted to ttc in October on holiday in Cuba, until we realised about Zika and the 6 months. Changed our holiday to Lanzarote instead x

Thanks everyone, needed a wake up call!

Hi all.

I have a trip planned to Bali, and I will be 16weeks pregnant by the time I travel. I had no idea Bali was on the Zika list and now I’m freaking out a bit. My midwife has told me not to worry and that I just need to be vigilant with mozzie bites. I’ve done the research and the risk seems so low! Especially is Bali... has anyone travelled to a zika country when pregnant?

Looking for a bit of re-assurance!!

Happy holiday

KochabRising · 03/03/2018 08:21

Be aware that the tests are not that accurate - I wouldn’t rely on them.

It’s also possible that Zika can hang around in semen longer than 6m. The viruses that make semen hot post recovery seem to be able to lurk for a long time - the recommendations on sex with recovered Ebola patients have been extended multiple times as more data has been collected (caveat:Ebola and zika are different types of virus.) personally, I think if you’re going to be ttc just avoid anywhere with the possibility of zika full stop.

Also honeymoon babies: wait - because if you’re one of the lucky women who vomits from days after conception like me it’ll ruin your honeymoon!

VaguelyAware · 03/03/2018 08:22

Exactly how are you supposed to be "vigilant with mozzie bites"?

Have you actually read the thread? Or do you know what zika can do if you contract it while pregnant?

sprinkleofsunshine · 03/03/2018 08:33

No I wouldn't risk it. I'm actually in the same position and the 6 months end in May. It felt like a lifetime away at the beginning but it's flown and had meant we can concentrate on getting a few other bits together prior to ttc. If you could change the destination I would or otherwise I'd hold of ttc. I spoke to 3 separate nurses and all 3 said not to risk it.

BookHelpPlease · 03/03/2018 08:39

@Lottieb89

NHS link

They advise only essential travel to pika areas for pregnant women since it can cause birth defects if you pass the virus onto the foetus. I wouldn't risk it in your shoes!

KochabRising · 03/03/2018 08:47

Exactly how are you supposed to be "vigilant with mozzie bites"?

The type of mosquito that transmits zika bites in the day. Bednets /long sleeves in evening etc wont help a bit. Unless you have literally covered every exposed piece of skin you risk getting bitten.

Your midwife is wrong on this.

Check your travel insurance - being pregnant should be enough for them if there is active zika in the area.

Char87 · 22/03/2018 06:23

Lottieb89 I am in the same situation as you and go to Bali in may. Are you still going? What did the midwife say about going?
