Asherman's syndrome and no periods

d4phne · 04/01/2007 17:54

Hi! I miscarried in Sep (5 months ago) and had an ERPC. 8 weeks later an unltrasound showed that the uterus was not empty and another ERPC was performed. That was 7 weeks ago and my periods have not yet returned. Is there anybody
that has experience with Amenorrhoea and/or Asherman's syndrome? Thank you!

no sorry but thought I would bump this for you

Hulababy · 04/01/2007 22:23

I am on the waiting list to have a hysteroscopy for treatment for Asherman's Syndrome. My consultant had diagnosed this at my last appointment in November. There was some comment of prehaps cervical stenosis as well, but this may not be the case - don't know fully any of it till the op.

My periods stopped entirely whilst using the contraceptive pill. I stopped taking this more recently in September and my periods have kind of returned, after 18 months, but still are very light and lat no longer than about 12 hours.

I have a lot of pain during the week when my period is due, and also some pain during ovulation time as well. I haven't yet found an over the counter remedy for the pain - going to Gp this month about it.

MartianBishop has had successful treatment for Ashermans and has gone on to have children since.

Have you had a diagnosis or investigations at all?

Blandmum · 06/01/2007 17:51

I had a completly blocked cervix, with no periods (although I was ovulating and in huge pain each month) And Hula says I had sucessful treatment and them went on to have dd and ds (now 10 and 6)

Bowbelles · 07/01/2007 16:16

Hulababy this is interesting. My periods stopped for about 18 months too when I was on the pill. DP was due to have the snip so when mentioned it to my GP he told me not to worry and to see if they returned when I stopped taking the pill. They have returned but as with you they are light and not lasting as long as they used to (prob 3 days now). GP didn't seemed to be concerned and I have not been back since? Sorry to hijack this D4phne - Have you been back to your GP? Who mentioned Amenorrhoea and/or Asherman's to you?

d4phne · 08/01/2007 13:19

Hi all! Thanks for your info. Well after the 2nd ERPC my period should have returned within 4-6 weeks which is hasn't. Actually is has been more than 4 months now after the 1st ERPC.
I saw a gynaecologist who said that there is absolutely nothing he can do, but another
gynaecologist had mentioned to me Asherman's as possible reason why AF didn't return after the 1st ERPC. So I am really trying to figure out what the reasons could be. I will see GP on Wednesday, but have had such a horrible story so far that I do not get my hopes up.

Oh I should probably say that the pregnancy was very much wanted and we would like to try again. So I am in distress about not getting back to normal. The ones of you who are diagnosed with Ashermans: what were your symptons and what caused it? From your stories it doesn't sound like it was caused by ERPCs?

Bowbelles · 08/01/2007 15:19

Good luck for Wednesday d4phne, I hope things return to norml again for you soon. I never had ERPC and I'm not sure what my 'problem' is/was. As I said my periods have returned now but are quite light and irregular. GP wasn't concerned and I'm not complaining. I will read-up about Ashermans though.

Blandmum · 08/01/2007 15:30

My symptoms were, no bleeding at all (I was not on the pill). I knew that I was ovulation (mittleschmertz and mucus changes) I also had horrific period pains at the right time, but no bleeding. I was bleeding, but the blood was being forced back up into the uterus and through the fallopian tubes into the peritoneum. the pain was so bad I caould hardly stand up.

Hulababy · 08/01/2007 15:51

Good luck for Wednesday.

My complaints were:

  • lack of period (whilst on pill) and very light, short period (when off pill) since birth of DD over 4 years ago
  • a lot, and I mean a lot, of pain during time of period, and also around time of OV
  • fertility problems, although had given up TTC by this time but felt it was relevant
  • tender lower abdomen, getting worse at tome of period
  • tender cervix, again worse at certain times

I first saw the GP who thought I had a blocked cervix, and possibily cervical stenosis. Also had swollen uterus. GP referred me to hospital - wait of 10 weeks.

My first consultant's appoinment seemed to confirm stenosis and/or blocked cervix, and I was told to stop the pill. All my blood tests were normal, including ones showing I was ovulating. I was then given some hormone tablets to take to try to bring on a period. I took these and nothing, except a lot of pain. Periods returned after stopping pill but VERY short and light.

Second consultants appintment was 2 months later, and included an internal ultrasound scan. This was inconclusive. Saw the consultant this time, rather than the doctor, who then discussed Asherman's Syndrome as well as having a narrow cervix, although not necessarily stenosis. Has referred me for a hysterosocopy with probable/possible treatment for Ashermans. Possible cause could be my c section with DD. Although this would not then be related to the fertility problems I had prior to DD, but may refer to worse fetility issues after her birth.

Now have a waiting list for the op of 5-6 months. I am just over 1 month in on the wait.

The pain is my main concern, as I haven't found any over the counter tablets that even make a dint to the pain. I am missing 1 or 2 days of work with the pain - my work in a male prison is not the best place to be with this form of pain! I am making a GP's appointment for this month oto discuss better pain relief.

Hulababy · 08/01/2007 15:53

The pain is FAR worse than ordinary period pain. It is all emcompassing at times. Mine is also accompanied by pain and tenderness of my cervix and lower abdomen/uterus. Again, maybe where the main bleed cannot get out so possibily adhesions near to cervical opening.

Blandmum · 08/01/2007 15:55

Fully agree about the level of the pain. I couldn't move, and could just hug a hor water bottle and pop pain killers. It was awful

d4phne · 08/01/2007 16:03

Dear Hulababy, martianbishop and Bowbelles,
thank you very much for your stories. I have no pain at all and think I am ovulating but no period.
I am very sorry that you have so much pain, Hulababy. It is incredible that you cannot have surgery sooner if you are in such pain!!! Could you ask the GP if he/she can accerate the process?
All the best you.

I can if I pay! The main isn't constant, hence still here dealing with it. It is for a couple of days or so when I have a period, and a day during OV time. Luckily most of my pain is regular, starting on a weekend and I only work PT, so can limit my time off to 1-2 days a month. I have already had to see work about the number of occasions I have had to take time off.

Blandmum · 08/01/2007 16:06

I was given the same sort of time frame, and in the end I opted to go private to get it sorted out. I was very keen to solve the problem, because of the level of pain, and also because the ashermans had essentially made me infertile.

Follwong the treatment I went on to have two normal pgs and the children are now 10 and 6.

I have no further problems with Ashermans but feel that I do have adhesions as a result

Hulababy · 08/01/2007 16:06

pain, not main.

They already know I will accept a concellation.

Blandmum · 08/01/2007 16:09

I found the pain overwhelming Hula, you have my total sympathy!

Hulababy · 08/01/2007 16:11

Just good hear someone at the other side, knowing the pain will go.

A little worried as been told I may need to have the hystoroscopy thing more than once, depending on what they find. Never had a general before either - am such a coward!

Blandmum · 08/01/2007 16:13

Once the treatment was done. I felt much better, although I did bleed a lot when the IUD was in place (3 weeks out of 4 which was grim)

Hulababy · 08/01/2007 16:15

Not been told anything about afterwards yet.

Bowbelles · 10/01/2007 22:56

You poor things, I didn't have any pain. Oh to be a boy at times.

d4phne · 17/01/2007 16:24

Hey all. Just got a diagnosis. My cervix has been damaged and is completely blocked (cervical stenosis). I have been menstruating, but only 'internally', Will have surgery next week. Thanks again for all your help. I wouldn't be where I am witout you!!!

OP posts:
Hulababy · 17/01/2007 16:35

Glad you have a dx. That is a really quick turn around - a week! Wow! Hope surgery goes well.

Cervical stenosis is what they first thought I had, but then changed there mind at the second appointment - 8 weeks later. Off work again today witht he pain, but have been to GPs and got some new painkillers at least. Not sure if they will help yet.

Blandmum · 17/01/2007 16:37

You are in the same situation that I found myself in , all those years ago. My two children were both conceived naturaly after the treatment and are now a very healthy 10 year old girl and 6 year old boy. If I can be of help, let me know.

Good luck!

Hulababy · 17/01/2007 16:41

GP is also contacting my consultant to see if anything can be done about the wait, as I haven't heard anything at all since beginning of November, and to remind him we will take any cancellations.

d4phne · 17/01/2007 17:41

Thanks for your replies. Hulababy, I am in the lucky position to have a private insurance through work (it is required at my work okace!!!) but my understanding is that I would get treated in the NHS system even faster -- i.e. tomorrow. I choose the wait to get a better surgeon, since under the NHS the first ERPC was incomplete (they told mne there is a 5% chance) and in the second ERPC resulted in this cervical damage (1/10000). Good luck to you.
