I'm TTC #1.. Never been pregnant before so have no experience regarding pregnancy birth ect ect.. i always watch one born when its on and i must admit it scares me so much that sometimes it puts me off having a baby some ladies are in soo much pain!!.. with that said i know your probably thinking.. dont watch it then but i feel i need to know what is going to happen. my mum had me, my brother and sister on just gas and air and my step mum had my sister on just 2 paracetamol and you don't really ever see that on one born it always looks traumatic Blush .. does this programme intrigue and scare anyone as much as me hehe? ? Grin

I love the program!!! I'm ttc#1 as well and yes the prospect of giving birth is scary as hell, but you don't know what it's going to be like so I find the program informative as well as entertaining. I like that you get to know the couples and get a bit of background.

MissMartin1992 · 03/04/2015 12:53

i know i like that aspect aswell its nice isnt it.. i think its great they have done it on tv do we can get to watch... scares me silly though! They are brave for putting out there as it's a very special.. emotional part of their lives to share

Don't forget they're making a TV programme so the producers won't want to show the straightforward/easy births - the dramatic ones make for better telly. Doesn't mean it's a big drama for everyone. That said, I used to love watching it but now I'm pregnant I can't bring myself to!

MissMartin1992 · 03/04/2015 12:59

awww congratulations to you piglet Thanks Grin i know hehe!

I'm due in just over 2 weeks and sometimes get very anxious about labour and birth (other days I'm just like 'well he's got to come out one way or another!).
I've never watched OBEM and never will! Only for the fact that I'm really squeamish and can't stand to watch operations or anything like that. Shock

comeagainforbigfudge · 03/04/2015 13:06

Nah. Don't want it. Like all reality programmes they edit them to get the viewers. And I know it's going to bloody agony so don't need reminded thanks very much secretly hopes for a easy birth

MissMartin1992 · 04/04/2015 20:01

aww bless you.. im exactly the same! nd i know but i still cant stop myself :)

Oh I LOVE one born! It scary knowing that's going to be us one day in such pain, but when you see the utter joy on the mothers (and fathers) faces its just utterly heart warming, isn't it?
It gets me so excited it's unreal, still waiting for my BFP though!

MissMartin1992 · 05/04/2015 20:56

yeah madgiebean! is such a special moment to share on tv for them. . Grin Good luck to youuu! x

I found parts of labour quite funny, if that helps at all? Especially accidentally squishing DH's sandwiches down the back of our folding table as I inexorably leant on it during a contraction.

I was one of those for whom it was a bit unreal but really not that bad.

FrankelandFilly · 05/04/2015 21:07

I watched OBEM to prepare myself for what childbirth could be like. Far better to go into it with some real life "knowledge" than expecting it to be like the movies!

It might help you, once pregnant, to consider birthing classes. They'll help you confront any fears (I had loads!) and give you techniques to calm yourself. I did a Lazy Daisy course and it really helped me. The breathing techniques are great and lots of useful stretches/yoga-type poses to help with pregnancy in general.

I was lucky and had a really positive birth experience (9.5 hours from first contraction to birth, delivered using gas and air) and I put that down, in part at least, to having practised my breathing techniques to keep myself calm and "in the zone".

m33r · 06/04/2015 04:49

I watched OBEM too and also did lazy daisy. My labour was 3 hours 55 mins and I didn't use any pain relief or gas and air.

I found OBEM quite helpful in as much as when I asked for oain relief and mw told me it was 'too late' I knew baby was imminent so it out me in the zone rather than panicking me.

I know I was very lucky but wanted to share that it's not always awful (and lazy daisy or similar can really help!)

MissMartin1992 · 06/04/2015 22:24

thats really funny about the sandwiches! Grin ill definately look into those lazy daisy classes once i do get pregnant! sounds very helpful... wow! you had a very quick birth!! my step mum was hrs in total... hopefully one day ill be like you guys hehe... nice and quick with nice positive births.. thanks for replying!! Grin Thanks

To be fair, at the end of your pregnancy you are both fed up with being pregnant and so desperate to meet your baby that you may well not even blink an eye at the thought of childbirth. Grin

MissMartin1992 · 06/04/2015 23:04

hehee i hope so Grin

Trust me by the time you are thirteen days overdue it won't seem too bad! Maybe I'm not the person to ask though: it was a looooooong labour but it ended. That's the thing to cling onto. Also, epidurals are great!

MissMartin1992 · 07/04/2015 08:22

aww poor you Sad the thought of a epidural makes me feel weak! i have the biggest fear ever! of needles .. injections anything that goes into my skin hehe... i was going to have a cholestrol check as part of the health check at work until the guy said he had to prick ny finger.. haha i was like hell no! i faint all the time im so silly i went with my nan once to help her while she had a blood test .. i fainted and i ended up on the bed surrounded by nurses..Sad Shock

OP posts:
bwow · 07/04/2015 08:33

God if that's scared you don't watch don't drop the baby!i was already pregnant watching that, every episode had a complication... I too hate needles, never had a blood test pre pregnancy. Had to chat rubbish with the student to distract myself, I exclaimed was that it? once done. I got used to it because it was for the baby and I just resigned myself to it. The birth itself i did on gas and air. It's brilliant stuff. I have pictures of myself that my dh took of me at 9cm looking very drunk with a huge grin on my face. You really are in a lot of pain, but the drugs make it almost like an out of body experience I thought. Good luck

I might be in the minority but the births on obem that i can't stand are the inductions and onEs with epidurals. It doesn't seem right that a midwife comes In, checks then says right we are ready to push. Also they always look like the most tiring Births. Not that I'm against that... Each to there own but from an outside perspective the au naturale low intervention ones just look less tiring (although obvs more painful)

FrankelandFilly · 07/04/2015 14:42

I used to hate needles too. Don't get me wrong, I don't love them now! But I needed fertility treatment to conceive my DD and the upshot of that was having to give myself daily injections for the first half of my cycle for 5 months. Trust me, when you've got a goal in mind you can overcome a lot!

My tip for blood tests (again, I've had A LOT of those!) is don't watch! Look the other way and talk if it helps distract you. If you tell the nurse you're a bit funny about needles they'll do what they can to put your mind at rest.
