TTC with PCOS

Ainat266 · 15/03/2015 14:25

Are there any other ladies out there trying to conceive with PCOS? Or any success stories of conceiving with PCOS?

We've been ttc and off of bc since August. Since then I've been diagnosed with PCOS and put on Metformin. I am overweight, especially for my height as I'm only short - but am trying to lose the weight. I'm almost at a 10% weight loss since getting the PCOS diagnosis in November 14. I haven't had any periods since coming off of bc in August 14, apart from what I'm guessing was a withdrawal bleed (that happened pretty much straight away - end of August) and a couple of very light bleeds that lasted no longer than a day.

I'm just feeling all a bit fed up now and think I need to hear from others that are either in a similar boat or have been able to have healthy normal pregnancies despite the PCOS.

I would be around 8 weeks by my reckoning. HPT have been coming back negative hence the blood test.

Ainat266 · 31/03/2015 14:49

Ab I think we're in a similar boat - right down to the being sick of Facebook thing! Everyones announcing they are pregnant or are plastering it with newborns. If it were me, I'd be doing the same I'm sure, but instead green eyed monster is settling in.

As for "cycles" - I had a withdrawal bleed and nothing since. It's now been 7-8 months.

Drew I have my fingers crossed that it's a BFP for you. Flowers

How do i get the Dr to prescribe me anything for PCOS! I have been twice in the past few months and always end up seeing a locum who wont prescribe anything (dont know if thats why). I have been referred back to a gynaecologist today but very impatient as Im 39 y.o. I have booked to see a female partner again in a few weeks, I will have waited two months by then! Hope she may prescribe...or is it the specialists??

Ginfizz90 · 31/03/2015 21:01

Ainat-im in exactly the same boat, 6 month off the pill and no AF, get period pains same time every month but no bleed it's driving me to distraction, it's all I can think about! I wonder if my Dr will give me provera? Are they open to this?

Ainat266 · 31/03/2015 21:23

I'm going to try and get a doctors appointment next week and ask for provera. So far at the surgery I've had two appointments with helpful doctors, and 2 appointments with a really unhelpful, uncompassionate woman. I am going to try and make sure the appointment isn't with the latter!

I've been getting pains and twinges from time to time, but stupidly I haven't been recording when I've been getting them. Maybe it would have helped to do so. Same with spots...

I've popped on for a little mope. my amazing Dr has randomly quit my surgery, leaving me with two female doctors who are really unsympathetic to PCOS. it just makes everything so much harder when they don't know their stuff Angry

PontyGirl · 31/03/2015 21:45

hit send too soon!

hope everyone is okay Thanks Thanks

Ginfizz90 · 31/03/2015 22:00

I find recording the pains and twinges helps me to think something's happening! My Dr is the same, v unhelpful it's just not fair. I won't be leaving that surgery without a prescription!

PontyGirl · 31/03/2015 22:02

it's really irritating isn't it gin, I'm so Angry Angry Angry tonight.

Ginfizz90 · 01/04/2015 10:34

Been taking agnus castus for a week. Why hasn't it worked yet??? Lol Hmm

PontyGirl · 01/04/2015 11:24

ha! I was taking the drops but they were making me feel terrible, so I've stopped and I'm just on inositol (sp?) so I'll see if that helps at all!

Ginfizz90 · 01/04/2015 11:26

Really? In what way? I haven't had any side effects yet. I have ordered some inositol it's at home haven't tried it just yet. Any luck with that at all?

AbFab86 · 01/04/2015 12:46

I haven't had any side effects from the agnus castus either. It may as well be brown sugar in the capsules for all I know! I'm on inositol too and haven't noticed much difference in terms of insulin resistance, but my diabetes doctor told me to increase my metformin to 3000mg a day (from 2000) and I think that's working to make me less insulin resistant. Or it could be a combination of the 3.

Just a thought. How do we know whether we've ovulated or not? The OPKs don't work because of the abnormal LH levels in PCOS sufferers. My temperature chart looks like a mountain range (does that just signify an anovulatory cycle?). How are we supposed to know when we've actually ovulated? I plan on just DTD at least every other day to catch any little egg which dares to venture out Grin

PopcornPip · 01/04/2015 13:02

ab good question! If you find an answer let me know. I have a thermometer but haven't started temping yet. I'm waiting for the results of my 21 day blood test which will hopefully be positive. I really don't know what I'll do if it isn't. I get ewcm and in the last few months have been getting definite ovulation pain. I really should be more patient but this whole thing is tiring sometimes!
Ponty let us know how you get on with the inositol, am considering it at the moment.

PontyGirl · 01/04/2015 14:44

the agnus gave me awful headaches! I will try and get back on it next month (if this month is not successful!)

I always thought that it was if your chart looks like a mountain range, you're not ovulating. I was temping when I got pregnant with dd and it was fairly up and down, but when I had ovulated it was really obvious. will see if I still have a picture of it to post

PontyGirl · 01/04/2015 14:48

also I use fertility friend which tells you if you haven't ovulated

eskimolaura · 01/04/2015 18:54

Hello ladies, I have spoken to a couple of you before on other threads and would like to ask your advice.

I came off the pill in November and haven't had a natural AF since. Infact, I haven't had a natural AF for around 15/16 years due to BC and can't remember my cycles before I went on it. In January, I was given Norethisterone by my GP and it brought on a bleed. With this, they were able to do the Day 3 blood tests, which came back as 'normal'. In March, I was referred to Gynae.

Today, I had an internal ultrasound to check my ovaries and endometrium. It was a little bit 'inconclusive'. She said my ovaries look slightly enlarged. She said the follicles around them look a bit on the small side and that they are all the same size. She said I haven't ovulated recently. She said that the report and the photos would go back to the consultant, who could exclude PCOS when he sees the photos??? (I take it that this means he could also diagnose it when he sees the photos???) Confused She said they would take the photos and the blood results into consideration when they look at everything. She wouldn't rule out PCOS. On the plus side, my womb lining looks fine. I am relieved that she said I have no glaring symptoms of PCOS, but wary that she didn't rule it out.

As well as this I am on the waiting list for a HSG. This requires me to have it between Day 7 and Day 10 of my cycle. I called my GP yesterday and asked him about this. When do I have it if I am not having cycles? He prescribed me another course of progesterone to bring on a bleed. I say 'another course'; he actually prescribed me 6 courses... that is 60 tablets. Easter Shock His reasoning? So that I have them in supply if I need them. I'm guessing that he thinks I may need to have further tests at a certain day in my cycle and that this will save me having to call again. Fair enough.

Does anyone on here recognise any of these symptoms as PCOS? I think I'm probably asking a stupid question and should just wait for the consultant to contact me, but I'm a bit disappointed as I thought that I'd get a 'yes, you have got it' or a 'no, you haven't got it' but she was a bit elusive in her replies. She said there are no really 'glaring' signs of PCOS and that some ovaries are quite bright and that can be a sign, but mine aren't. Has anyone got any idea? Thank you :)

PontyGirl · 01/04/2015 19:05

hi Eskimo!

I have had three scans over the years due to irregular cycles. The first one showed no cysts but I was diagnosed with it anyway. my second was when I was pregnant and they were covered in cysts. I have had another since my dd was born and there were no cysts again! from what I was told, they can come and go. I would guess this is what has happened with you. it may just be a mild case! hope this helps Smile

PontyGirl · 01/04/2015 19:06

the "it" I was diagnosed with being pcos!

Pirsy1 · 01/04/2015 19:12

Hi eskimolaura,
I think they use the Rotterdam criteria to diagnose PCOS. According to this you have PCOS if you have 2 out of 3 of:

  1. Oligomenorrhoea ie not having periods very often
  2. Signs of high androgen levels - acne, unwanted hair etc
  3. Typical ultrasound appearance of ovaries
Sounds like the person who did the USS didn't want to commit to interpreting the appearances so it'll be up to the consultant, but I would say you could still have PCOS based on what you've said. No one can diagnose PCOS based on what the scan looks like on its own, as some people have polycystic ovaries on scan but they don't have the syndrome as they don't have any of the other symptoms ie they still ovulate every month etc.
Pirsy1 · 01/04/2015 19:14

Also following on from what PontyGirl said, a doctor did my scan and she said the appearance of polcystic ovaries can vary ie week to week so they might look ok one week and not the next.

PontyGirl · 01/04/2015 19:35

I have added my chart from when I got pregnant with dd... Its pretty rocky but you can see a def temp shift!

TTC with PCOS
DrewOB · 01/04/2015 19:35

Blood test negative. What's wrong with me!

eskimolaura · 01/04/2015 19:36

Ponty and Pirsy Thank you for your replies. I was kind of expecting the things that you have both said. Pirsy I don't have symptoms of number 2 on the criteria, but at the moment, I have number 1 and possibly number 2, although not certain of this obviously! I guess there's nothing for it but to keep waiting for more news Hmm

PontyGirl · 01/04/2015 19:38

the chart I put up was for ab BTW!
