Morning ladies!

I have bleated on about spotting before AF a lot now on these conception boards and have realised that it does seem to happen to a log of people, can be for many different reasons and also people can be fobbed off by the doctors as "nothing to worry about".

My periods were normal until last August when I started getting brown spotting 4 days before AF came in full force.

I have googled and googled and there are lots of threads of women TTC with this mysterious affliction, but they only last about 20 posts so you can never find out what the outcome was. What were they treated for? Did they manage to conceive? And the one that I'm always desperate to know the minute I start spotting every month; did they get the spotting the month they conceived?

So I want this thread I be a place for TTC mumsnetters who spot before AF to come and share their experiences and stories and support. The information out there is so conflicted so it would be so good to keep this one going until we get some answers and some BFPs!!

Hello everyone, for the passed weeks I have been experiencing this spotting before and after period. I even spot after sex especially when I feel like my vagina is cut up inside. I realized that my uterus feels tender. When I go to the bathroom to pass stool, that might be challenging I realized that I bleed heavier. What do you think could cause that?

chiliplant · 06/08/2014 18:26

To all pre AF spotters there is hope! Always spotted from five days before AF is due. Que long drawn out sadness and uncertainty until full flow arrives.
This month, went t bathroom and browny red when I wiped (really down etc) three days of that and then nothing.. Took a test three days later and v positive!

angelaham · 06/08/2014 21:07

Thank you chiliplant, that is the reassurance that we need, congratulations on your pregnancy

When the uterus is not in its place, spotting may occur. For this (God Willing), you may do the following (found on the internet): Maya Abdominal Massage Self Care Techniques The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage ™ are centered around the ancient Mayan techniques, which reposition organs that have dropped and restricted the flow of blood, lymph, nerve & chi energy. As with any other natural healing, Arvigo Techniques seek to restore the body to its natural balance. This technique is provided for therapeutic self care only and is intended to be used in conjunction with treatments from a professional or certified Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner. Consult www.arvigomassage.com for a list of qualified practitioners. To Prepare • Empty your bladder and create a quiet, peaceful environment to relax for 5-10 minutes (just before bedtime is perfect!). • Wear loose fitting clothing with no zippers or buttons over the abdomen. • Lie on your back and place a pillow under your head and your knees to soften your abdominal muscles. (If you have uterine prolapse, it may also be helpful to place a pillow under your hips to elevate your pelvis.) • Breathe deeply and slowly for a few moments until you feel relaxed. Self Care Massage Techniques Lower Abdominal 1. Bring both of your hands together with your index fingers side by side and tuck one thumb under the other. Bring all eight fingers close together, slightly bent and relaxed. See diagram. 2. Through your clothing or a sheet, or with oiled fingers, locate where your pubic bones meet in the middle with your index fingers, and place these fingers on the small indent. Inhale and as you exhale, slowly slide off the top of your pubic bones while keeping your fingernails in contact with the bones. Press as deeply as it is comfortable for you into the soft tissue space above your pubic bone. See Diagram. (If your uterus is too low, you will feel resistance like the consistency of a water balloon.) 3. While maintaining the same pressure, gently and slowly move your fingertips toward your navel. Repeat this stroke from your pubic bone to your navel a total of 3 times. 4. With the same hand position, move your fingertips to one side of your pelvis with the little finger of one hand on the pubic bone and the other little finger on your hip bone. Again bring all eight fingers close together, slightly bent and relaxed. Inhale and as you exhale, slowly slide off the bones and press as deeply as it is comfortable for you into the soft tissue space of the pelvic bowl. 5. While maintaining the same pressure, gently and slowly move your fingertips toward the midline. Repeat this stroke a total of 3 times. 6. Repeat #4 and #5 on the other side of the pelvis. If your uterus is tilted to the left or right, you will feel resistance like the consistency of a water balloon before you get to the midline. 7. Repeat #2 through #6 2 more times, and then repeat #2 and #3 a final time for a total of 30 strokes. 8. Open your hands, reaching as far as possible without lifting your head, and place them flat over the groin where your legs join your pelvis on each side. Stroke softly 4-5 times over your skin and the underlying inguinal lymph nodes toward your abdomen. Continue the same strokes down both inner thighs along the lymph nodes, repeating this stroke 5 times. Upper Abdominal 1. Apply oil or lotion to your fingertips. Make an “M” (for Maya!) with your hands by facing the palms of your hands toward each other and curling your fingers so that the fingernails of all eight fingers touch. Place your fingertips on the center of your upper abdomen just below the ribcage. Inhale, and as you exhale, press as deeply as it is comfortable for you into the soft tissue space. While maintaining the same pressure, gently and slowly move your fingertips toward your navel. Repeat this stroke from your rib cage to your navel a total of 3 times. 2. Place your fingertips on one side of your upper abdomen just below the ribcage. Inhale and as you exhale, press as deeply as it is comfortable for you into the soft tissue space. While maintaining the same pressure, gently and slowly move your fingertips diagonally toward your navel. Repeat this stroke from your rib cage to your navel for a total of 3 times. 3. Repeat # 2 on the other side of the upper abdomen. Then repeat #1, #2, and #3, ending with #1 for a total of 30 strokes. If you find areas of tenderness, pain or congestion, adapt your pressure so that you can continue to relax. Breathe and continue to massage the area. If pain persists, even with a light touch, stop for now. If you experience pain initially, it should gradually diminish with each self care massage. Simply follow these instructions as best you can. After practicing the self care day for several days, you will become more familiar with the massage and more confident in your touch. If you continue to have difficulty, contact your Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner. After Self Care • Drink plenty of water to hydrate your body and support the healing process. Thank yourself for taking the time to take care of yourself. • Honor your experience by paying attention to the changes and responding with what you need. For example, write your feelings in your journal or diary or share them with a trusted friend or therapist. • Repeat the self care massage everyday except 5 days prior to and during your period or for 30 days, and then reduce to 2-3 times a week for your health. When To Modify or Avoid Self Care Massage • 5 days prior to and during your menstrual bleeding, do not deeply massage the uterus, but you may continue doing # 8 over the lymph nodes and the upper abdominal massage. It is okay to very gently and superficially massage over the uterine area prior to and during your period. • During pregnancy, self care massage can be appropriately adapted for your trimester of pregnancy. Consult your Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner for more information. • After abdominal surgery, you must wait until the tissue has healed, and your physician has cleared you for normal activity. For example, with Cesarean birth and hysterectomy, 8-10 weeks after surgery is usually recommended. • If you are taking pain medications or other substances that may mask discomfort and pain, self care massage is contraindicated. • If you have an intra uterine device (IUD) for birth control, #1-6 are contraindicated. • If you are under treatment for abdominal or pelvic infection or cancer, self care massage is contraindicated. • If you experience intense emotional pain during the self care, it is important that you seek professional support to help you pass through the gates of emotional healing. Please consult your Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner for guidance and referral. • If you experience intense pain or discomfort during the self care massage or have a sudden onset of abdominal pain, please consult your Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner who will recommend that you see your physician before continuing the self care massage.

I have been ttc for 4 months, last month I started with brown spotting 7 days before af so I tested and got a positive result. My period arrived though and according to ovulation sticks I ovulated as usual this month so must have been a chemical pregnancy. Same thing happened this week though, 7 days before af and brown spotting again with a negative test.
I've never had it before and have read lots on line that say it might be a problem. Any suggestions welcome!

PipTed · 03/10/2019 18:28

Hello. OMG I’ve been spiralling into a worry wormhole about this exact same thing! Came off the pill in July and TTC since. My withdrawal bleed was ‘normal’ but then in the last two I’ve had light spotting before AF. This month in particular I had spotting intermittently for five days before AF and when that came it was about 2 days Long. I had a smear in Feb and that made me bleed - which I’ve never experienced- however did need a biopsy 😞 no further treatment required though, so wondering if it is an eroded cervix. Relieved that there’s so many others experiencing similar things.

Ebr28 · 09/10/2019 20:45

Hi Ladies

So I’m trying to conceive my second. I used to spot 2 days before my period, but the last 5 months it’s been 5 days before my period. We’ve been trying for 10 months so far and got nowhere. I went to the doctors and had a blood test on day 21. My hormone levels were all good but my iron was very low. She put me in iron tablets for 3 months, and said it should help conception. I still spot 3 days before my period but this month no spotting and so far no period. My cycle is 28 days. I ovulated last Sunday, I’ve done 2 pregnancy test, one 7days after ovul and another 9days which were both negative. Has anyone had this and then been pregnant?

MrFlibblesEyes · 10/10/2019 09:34

I was Ttc for 18 months and always spotted before every period. The 2 times I fell pregnant within that time (one sad outcome, one due next Wednesday 😁) were the only times I had no spotting whatsoever so for me it was definitely a sign!

ALCV2019 · 10/10/2019 10:09

I’m interested in knowing the outcome of this too. I never used to spot before periods but since I had a miscarriage in July I have spotted for 5 days before each period I have had since then.
This month the spotting technically should have started Monday but nothing yet?! I am trying to conceive no.2 and defo don’t ‘feel pregnant’ like I did with my first. So thinking to wait till next week and test if AF doesn’t show!

Hannah1925 · 13/10/2019 11:55

Hello everyone. I'm so glad I found this thread feel much better knowing I'm not alone. I spot usually 6 days leading up to my period. I've been TTC for 12 months now for number one and still no luck. I know I have cervical erosion but I feel cramps as well so feel like it's something else. What do you all think?

Mars08 · 14/10/2019 14:57

Hi. To add my experience. I’ve always had regular periods. 4 or 5 days with spotting afterwards. Horrible cramps.
In February I had 3 painful ones separated by a week. The first two lasted a day or so, but the third was my actual period. Ultrasound showed nothing.
My period shortened to 3 days.
I came off BC in May. I started experiencing occasional spotting a month or two later. Often spotting two days before my period, once pink mid cycle spotting.
Last month I had a few hours of red bleeding two days early. No cramps and it was gone in a few hours. Period arrived on time. OB said it’s unusual but wasn’t concerned.
This month, the second day of spotting was red at the end of the night. Brown again today.
We just are about to start TTC.
Last change is mood swings. During O day and the day before, I cry over EVERYTHING. My OB finally called me back and thinks it is post menstrual syndrome.
My internist refuses to deal with anything OB related, my OB has a 1.5 to 2 month wait to get in, and I’m frustrated.

PipTed · 21/10/2019 18:56

@Hannah1925 I feel like I’m getting cramps too, when spotting. This month is my third after stopping the pill and I’ve had spotting on day 23 of my cycle this time, but predicted AF a lot later. Spotting only lasted a day, took a test last week and no BFP so not sure what’s happening.

Hannah1925 · 21/10/2019 22:33

@PipTed I'm going to the doctors this Friday so will let you know what they say xxxxxx riggers crossed. Sorry for tmi but I have brown clots that come out before and after my period. So disgusting

PipTed · 30/10/2019 22:44

@Hannah1925 still no period, but on Friday i felt a lump on my cervix and had an emergency visit to my docs. It’s thought to be a polyp due to the bleeding, however I’m awaiting a referral to the hospital to have a closer examination since I have history of abnormal smears. Hope your visit to the docs went ok? X

orangeloo · 31/10/2019 13:16

Been spotting 6-8 days before period for about 2.5 years now. I was pleased to find this thread and that it's still going.
I have had blood tests. Day 2 and 21 bloods all normal and internal scan- normal. Can't find concrete answers anywhere. I've been ttc for 10 cycles with no joy. DP sperm is fine. I'm being referred to gynae clinic as In My area it's 3years of trying for fertility referral. So I protested and said they can't leave me trying that long when I have a symptom that there may be something wrong which is the only reason I got that referral.
I have tried vit b complex but am going to again with a different tablet

Starting acupuncture next week.

Need to exercise more/ massage as have also seen another theory that is is old blood / poor blood flow. Also started red raspberry leaf tea and have white peony on the way.

I will let you know if any of those improve things. X

Cooks86 · 11/11/2019 14:05

I just wanted to write a quick message as we've been TTC for the last 5 months with number 2 and I had been spotting 4-5 days consistently before my AF arriving each month which is not normal for me. I scoured these boards for information and went and had all my bloods taken and scans etc. All results were normal, but the spotting persisted.

Just a note to say we got our BFP this week at 9dpo!

I would recommend going to get checked just in case, but if all is normal, then it didn't stop us from getting pregnant! Best luck everyone!

orangeloo · 11/11/2019 15:34

Congrats @Cooks86 !! and thank you for posting it's nice and reassuring to hear if bfp's despite spotting.

gingerspaniel · 11/11/2019 21:08

@Cooks86 congratulations on your BFP! Could I ask whether the spotting stopped this cycle when you fell pregnant or did you get your BFP despite the spotting? Thank you

Cooks86 · 13/11/2019 13:09

@gingerspaniel Thank you!

I think my spotting was linked to my AF starting around 9-10 dpo (4-5 days prior and then my normal cycle would begin) so figured if we fell pregnant the spotting wouldn't happen that month. I didn't have any implantation bleeding, then BPF on 9dpo and no spotting afterward. Hope that helps!

orangeloo · 13/11/2019 13:38

@Cooks86 sorry if I'm being dumb Confused so is that you didn't or did get some spotting the month you got your BFP? X

RealSmart1459 · 09/12/2019 02:24

Hi all-

Joined this site just for this thread as it’s been a really helpful one to read as I navigate TTC with the pre bleeds. My spotting is happening 4-6 days before AF stops then AF starts on schedule. I’ve got a 28-32 day cycle.

It’s sooooo frustrating reading other boards because they are all obsessed with implantation bleeding which this clearly isn’t. This is my 4th cycle ttc and the dreaded spotting arrived. I’m convinced (rightly or wrongly) that I only spot when I havent conceived. With our first child when we got pregnant, I dont recall any spotting the first few months at all.

Hoping we can keep each other informed and updated. Smile

orangeloo · 09/12/2019 11:09

Hi @RealSmart1459 sounds very like me. Did u have the spotting issue around the tone you conceived your 1st? I'm convinced it's low progesterone even though I've had x2 21 day bloods and they are normal. I've seen fertility specialist say this test is useless. Other theories I've heard is it's old blood that didn't come out last time. Logistically I'm really not convinced by this one. Also have heard a few times that it can be normal but I don't want to believe this either as I don't see how an egg can implant if my lining has already started shedding. Trying to improve my hormone balance naturally atm as gp not overly helpful.

RealSmart1459 · 09/12/2019 14:55

@orangeloo oddly enough I had just come off the pill when I got pregnant with our first (I know very lucky) but I didnt spot like this. I’ve been measuring my bbt as well and noticed a temperature drop the days I have spotting as well. Do you track your bbt?

I also dont after its old blood. Firstly because sometimes its pink and sometimes it’s brown, and second because it doesn’t make sense it just hangs out for weeks until the exact same time every month. I’ve been seeing an acupuncturist and although my mood swings seem to have levelled off my spotting has not. Last month I had it after my period as well for about 5 days! That was the worst. Just hoping this time I can spot less. I’ve heard it’s because I’m short on Qi spleen or something but when I look At the suggested diet that’s basically what I eat so not sure how I can Improve it further without living a very sad life I already basically live off lentils quinoa and oats!

orangeloo · 09/12/2019 18:51

@realsmart1459 I do bbt but not all month- only to confirm Ov. I will start being more thorough with this to see if temp drop corresponds.

I started acupuncture last month and too see mentioned some Qi deficiency or stagnation. I could do better eating wise but I'm not bad at all and don't want to start in December with Xmas coming. I'm gonna start Maca and seed cycling so will let you know if they help at all. Lay off caffeine and after Xmas all booze too.
