Hi Girls,

Found out today that I have polycystic ovaries, I haven't ovulated for 6 months and I've not had a period for 3 months.

Going to see the Doctor on Friday to discuss my options (hoping for Clomid).

What are other peoples experiences with this? I'm feeling a bit lost.

Babyborn I'm not sure, I think it should slowly rise upto ovulation, then drop back down during menstruation.

I had bloods done taken yesterday hippie it was done on day 26 given i usually have a 31-33 day cycle? Waiting for results, should see doc tomoz, how are u getting on with it all?

A friend of mine has just found out she is pregnant, she had PCOS since she was 16, shes nearly 34, she had been trying for a baby for 5 years, she just had 2 months on metaformin and just got her BFP! I am made up for her, hoping we all get ours soon too!

hippieshake · 16/04/2011 09:55

8Babyborn* Awh that's such good news for your friend! I started having my bloods done on day 21, assuming I had a 28 days cycle, but I haven't had a period for four months, so they started to test every week to see if I ovulated at all, which I haven't.

I've got an appointment at the hospital to see a gynaecologist/fertility clinic on the 28th. I've got so many questions that I want to ask, I can't wait to go!

What was the news from the doctor?

Hi hippe oh what a bummer that is for you. Roll on the 28th then! You will know so much more and can clear things up you want to know, like youve already mentioned. I bet your really looking forward to it!

Yes, i went and had the bloods taken, i was taking it the bloods were done on day 26 of my cycle as i was having a 32/33 day cycle. I had an appointment with GP booked from a few weeks ago yesterday and attended it, however, i came on early hours of yesterday morning, so the bloods would have been taken far too late for this last month. GP said the bloods were the same as the bloods taken a week before, and hormone levels were "normal" for the times in my cycle. We need to hit it nail on to see if im ovulating, but so far it hasnt be the correct time to take bloods. What an arse. Ive got bloods booked again now for 5th May (which should be day 21) so will book an appointment with my GP again when i come on my period next month so we can then work out if bloods were taken at the right time.Hoping its going to be a 28 day cycle like this last month!

hippieshake · 20/04/2011 10:26

That sounds hopeful though, they probably just missed you ovulating.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!x

BabyBorn have you tried temping or using OPKs to work out when you are ovulating? It might take the guesswok out of getting a test at the right time.

BabyBorn · 20/04/2011 16:38

HI hippie and euro no using OPK's dont work with most women that have PCOS. I have used them and it gave me 5 or 6 positives in a row which isnt right at all. I also get up far too early to temp and dont really have time as i have to literally get out of bed and go. I wake up at 5.30 to be in work for 6!

BabyBorn · 20/04/2011 16:39

whats happening with you guys?

eurochick · 20/04/2011 17:30

That's a shame. I guess I am one of the minority because both OPKs and tempng seem to be doing what they are supposed to, despite my PCOS. I am just about to have the Day 21 blood tests done to confirm I am ovulating and they are not giving off false signals.

Temping only takes about 20 seconds. I just stick the thermometer in my mouth as soon as the alarm sounds, lay still waiting for the beep for about 15 seconds and then memorise the temp shown until I get to a point in the day when I can put it in my chart. I realise it is not for everyone, but I am a huge fan as it gives me some clue as to what is going on in my body!

MrsHY1 · 20/04/2011 20:10

Hello both
I posted the full story in the 'short luteal phase gang' thread - but I had my appt with the specialist yesterday and it went pretty well - in that he's going to consider giving me Clomid to help me ovulate earlier and extend my luteal phase.
My blood results were completely normal - so I think that with the help of the metformin I've been taking for the past five years, I've moved my PCOS to simply PCO.
This cycle is a right bugger though - I've started to spot at day 19 and I haven't ovulated yet according to my OPKs (like you eurochick, they work for me too) so I can only assume this might be an anovulatory cycle. In which case, come on AF and let's start another one!!
This is the first cycle for 4 cycles that I've not temped - and I wish I had now! I'd love to see what's been happening, or at least confirm this one's anovulatory. Technically I've got a few more days to wait though, given I O around cd24.
xx

hippieshake · 23/04/2011 08:02

MrsHY1 how have you found Metformin? That's one of the things they might recommend for me when I go to the hospital on Thursday. I'm hoping for Clomid really, but I will do anything to ovulate.

My friend has diabetes and she took Metformin, she said it made her have really bad 'trotty botty' for two weeks, so bad she lost weight and had to stop taking it. I'm concerned I would get that.

Have any of you had any pain with your PCOS? I keep getting really bad pains on my right side. I'm not ovulating though. It just seems to hurt a lot.

OP posts:
eurochick · 23/04/2011 08:50

hippie I get severe pains together with my period, for the first couple of days. I also get a strange pain (not really painful, more of a feeling) around the time of ovulation. I get really bloated and get a pain low down on my right side.

I haven't taken metformin myself but I have friends who have and my old PA did too. The trotty botty is quite common. For some people it does settle down. Others find taking it before they go to bed helps. If it doesn't settle, I have heard there is also slow release metformin which is supposed to lessen the side effects, but as it is more expensive, doctors don't give it out unless the normal stuff causes problems. There are loads of people on metformin on the verity-pcos forum if you have questions.

hippieshake · 23/04/2011 16:54

Oh that's good to know, I'd give it a go and just see how I go with it (if they offer that.)

I'm not having periods, but I'm wondering if maybe my body has finally decided to try and ovulate. It's quite low on my right side, almost at the top of my leg I suppose, my boobs have been a bit sore too.

Have you had any luck?

Hello all, mind if I join you?!

DH and I are TTC#1 and I was diagnosed with PCOS in February. I came off the Pill last May and have had only 1 period since.
DH has submitted a sperm sample and I had an HSG last week, which showed my right Fallopian tube is blocked.

I have my next appointment with my gynaecologist on 10 May where she will give us the results of DH's test and let me know my next step, be it an operation to try and unblock my tube or straight on to Clomid.

Happy Easter to all [busmile]

eurochick · 23/04/2011 19:21

hippie that sounds quite like the ovulation pain that I get. Mine is usually coupled with a bloated feeling. I don't get any boob soreness though.

BabyBorn · 25/04/2011 13:02

Ovulation can be painless, or painful. I never used to experience ov pain but i do now! When it first started it was really bad, however its calmed down abit now (touches wood) i have strange pains in where feels like my ovaries should be, mostly shooting and twingey type pains (not like af pains at all) My boobs hurt during ovulation too, and i get extremely bloated, but i suppose for evey woman its different. I am not sure that my body is actually ovulating at the moment. I am awaiting my 21 day blood test.

hippieshake · 28/04/2011 21:31

So went to the hospital today....extremely upset and annoyed.

Firstly I was made to wait 45mins past my appointment time. Then once I got in the consultant didn't know a thing about me, not even my age. My Doctor hadn't told her that we are trying to conceive, so she thought she was just supposed to fix my irregular periods. I then told her I hadn't had a period this year, nevermind irregular, and she was like 'well it says in your notes you are having one every month'.

So then she said they needed to test the hubby's sperm...'we'll do that then you can come back in 8weeks and we'll look to see if you have blocked fallopian tubes..ok..bye.'

I was like 'excuse me, but I have some questions for you. My Doctor didn't have my scan when I last went to see him because he couldn't find it. So I don't actually know how polycystic my ovaries are or anything. I keep having really bad pains that stop me in my tracks...what are these things?'

Begrudgingly she did an internal exam, said everything seemed fine and then ushered me off with a 'See you in 8 weeks.'

Thinking of going private.

Hi hippieshake
Sorry - am only just responding now because I've been on holiday - which was lovely!
Wanted to reassure you that I have always got on completely fine with metformin - started on 500mg 3 times a day and never had any probs with trottybotty or anything else! So good luck with that if that's the course you take. xx

ChildOfThe1980s · 13/05/2011 16:22

I didn't know that PCOS has anything to do with insulin, or indeed tiredness. Will have to check out the websites as my GP told me nothing.

eurochick · 13/05/2011 16:58

Have a look at he Colette Harris & Theresa Cheung book on PCOS. It will tell you an awful lot about the condition. The unfortuantely thing about the NHS is that resources are so squeezed that doctors very often don't have time to explain much.

Cwtchmia · 23/06/2012 11:34

Hi ladies,

So nice to logon here and find others in the same situation as myself as when all other friends are falling pregnant around me it seems pretty lonely and isolating at times, so will be logging in here regularly to share thoughts and experience in the hope that I to can help others like reading your posts has helped me :)

So I've had really irregular periods since coming off the pill, and did so before I went on the pill. After several unsuccessful trips to my pretty useless Gp I've paid privately and finally seem to be getting some proper answers rather the the gps response of we will wait and see what happens :(

Had my first appointment a few weeks ago and since then have had a scan and blood tests now just waiting for my next period so I can have last set of bloods done in the first few days. From specialists first very quick look over my scan she thinks that I have mild PCOS as both as my ovaries aren't enlarged.

So now have to wait for period to finally come so we can get this last lot of bloods done so we can move on and hopefully get some firm answers.

Will post again when I have more news, keep positive ladies think I'm learning that patience is certainly the key xx

Liddy100 · 21/08/2012 18:36

Hi everyone

Im new the website - my husband and I have just decided to start trying for our first baby after a not so great scan I had last week.

Ive been going for scans every 6 months for the past two years nearly as i went 3 months without a period and then having a period for 2 months straight!

My new GP didnt seem to think i had the 'syndrome' just a few cysts on my ovaries but my previous doctor HAD diagnosed me.

During the scan last week the radiologist said she could count 12 cysts (whether they were on one or both ovaries i dont know). I was rather upset as having lost rather a lot of weight (2 stone in just under a year) and adopting a much healthier lifestyle, i was really hoping just to have a couple like most women.

Anyway, cutting my babbling story short, we decided to bring our plans forward a few months and start trying for a baby now. Im taking Boots Conception Care tablets to try and help me along but wondered if anyone had any other tricks they wanted to share?? Im peeing on sticks every day to check my ovulation and considered getting a ClearBlue Fertility Monitor but have been reading some mixed reviews. I have an appointment with my GP on Thursday which im looking forward to and dreading at the same time.

Sorry for babbling - relived to have gotten it out of my system and looking forward to your advice and words of wisdom!

Thanks, Liddy100 xxx

Hi I have pcos that I'd known about since I was 17. I have one gorgeous DD who was conceived naturally having missed a few pills. I was very lax about taking them. The fertility monitors aren't recommended for people with pcos. Your doing all the right getting healthy etc. ask your gp a referral to a fertility clinic. They may tell you to try for 6 months. Temperature charting is a good option too. Lots of people with pcos have babies naturally.

TimeForMyOwnDSorDD · 22/08/2012 09:19

Hi, i have the same problem and have been taking a mix of clomid and tamoxifen, also was put on metformin when i was overweight but now told to come off it as I am in my target weight. Ovulation has been really hit and miss, so far no bfp (well one chemical pregnancy) but it has definitely improved matters as before I just wasn't ovulating at all, periods about 3 times a year.

You need to be very very persistent with the medical profession as they like to fob you off with "wait and see" for a very long time. Once you are in the system, though, things can move speedily.

Cwtchmia · 25/08/2012 06:47

Morning all,

Thought I'd share my little ray of light with you all, I won't explain my whole experience again as that's in a previous post, but my mine and my husbands great surprise I found out that I'm 4weeks onMonday. After feelin unwell and constant nausea for the past two weeks I thought I'd do a test I had already convinced myself that I was being silly that I couldn't be. So I took the clear blue digital test and then went off to make my bed, coming back a couple of minutes later to find 1-2weeks pregnant!!!!

So there we have it a little ray of light, we r being realistic that it's sti in early stages and thugs can go wrong but the moment even though I feel like hell I wouldn't change it for the world

Wishing you all the same luck I have been blessed with
Xxx
