Oh Hairy so sorry you've got yet more uncertainty :(

The more I see of early scans the more I'm becoming convinced that between about 5 and 8 weeks they have no fecking clue how far along you actually are - because it varies so wildly and so do the sizes/development. I am so, so hoping you're just looking at a late starter there

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 12:13

Thanks. Fucking fucking fucking hell. I wish i'd not gone and just waited. I did ask dp whether he would mind if we didn't go. But he was worried
about ectopic.

chocciechip · 04/02/2011 12:19

hairy I'm sorry the scan wasn't more reassuring. I think this space of 'not knowing' that you now find yourself in is cripplingly stressful and my heart really goes out to you. I hope so much that the hcg levels give you some comfort.

But I do remember once posting up my own hcg levels in a previous pg, asking people on mumsnet if they were 'normal', and someone came on and said her hcg levels had been in triple digits for most of her first trimester, and climbed very slowly much to disbelief of doctors, and she had a a healthy baby. So I guess I'm echoing wombat and suggesting that maybe there isn't a 'correct' target to reach, but only averages, and we're all different.

I'm not sure if sizes and growth begins with ovulation or really starts to kick-off after implantation? (Can someone clarify this....?) Another lady in a thread I was on was absolutely certain of her dates too (we use a clearblue fertility monitor and SWI when the machine says so so its fairly rigid) and found at her scan that the bean was measuring a week earlier than she thought she should be. Or maybe that backs up what owl says and early scans generally.

It might be that another scan in a week gives a clearer indication. Regardless, I'm thinking of you and hope you're holding up.

Also, just to say that when you posted a few days ago that you've managed 3 BFPs in 9 months at 42 you gave me real hope (I'm nearly 40). I actually ran off to tell my DH. I think you have a lot to hope for for the future - don't give up hairy. x

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 12:34

Thanks hon that's a really lovely message x

Wombat33 · 04/02/2011 12:47

Hairy I think the 'doubling every two days' thing is a gross over-generalisation. I'm an 'information is power' kind of girl and when I'm stressed I tend to try to inform myselkf as muchas possible. I did a lot of research when I was fretting a few weeks ago and read several medicial papers on it and it really does seem to be less absolute than that. The more detailed conclusion seems to be that 85% of normal pregnancies will have an early HCG level that increases by at least 66% every 48-72 hours (bear in mind that that means that 15% of normal pregnancies won't increase that quickly - which seems quite a lot to me). Then as the numbers get higher the rate usually slows down. Once the levels get to about 6,000 or you get to 6 wks pg, levels will take on average 4.75 days to double.

Hope that helps. I'm keeping everything crossed that you get some more encouraging news this afternoon xxx

HongKongBaby · 04/02/2011 13:05

Hairy just wanted to drop in and say I'm so sorry you're in this situation. To look at the positives, there was something there, so don't give up hope. I hope they get your blood test results to you speedily, the waiting is agonising I know.

SameOldJollster · 04/02/2011 13:22

Just dropping by to say Hairy, am thinking of you and hoping as everyone has said that this afternoon's results will give you some reassurance.

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 15:38

Hi, everyone. I've got hcg of 5,372.

They've asked me to speak to the consultant in the morning, and think they will probably book me in for more bloods on Sunday.

Fingers crossed. It seems from what I've found online that that's a normal level for 6 weeks (well, within the incredibly differing range that is normal).

And I've worked out that a 33 percent rise since the last one every three days would put it at 6,900, so I am slow rising.

Will just have to wait and see what the next result says.

Mamapower · 04/02/2011 15:51

Hairy well that is good news and must give you hope lovely... glad they are monitoring you, try and get plenty of rest and look after yourself over the coming days x

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 15:56

woops, was always crap at maths. a 66% rise every three days would be about 5,900 so it's not that far off.

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 16:00

The consultant also talked about us not knowing the date of conception (just meeting sperm, and even that is an unknown really).

He said that sperm can live for seven days and eggs up to four (news to me) - and he said 'so do you think you can tell me the exact date of conception' and I said 'I'd be a very rich lady if I could'.

Clutching at straws any? Confused

chocciechip · 04/02/2011 16:09

hairy it sounds like on balance you can take heart from the scan then: the hcg being within the realms of 'normal' by wombats post, and you also now know the baby is in the right place. I meant to say earlier that I was told at my 6 week scan that the only thing they are looking for is to see if it's in the right place. And when we booked a private scan the private clinic refused to see anyone unless they were 7 weeks or more. So I think very early scans have enormous potential to freak people out. I am so glad that yours seems to have gone as reasonably well as one can hope for at this stage, and will be holding out huge hope for your bloods on Sunday. Hang in there.

nickstermum · 04/02/2011 16:16

Fab news re the hcg Hairs news to me re 4 days!!!

Mamapower · 04/02/2011 16:21

we knew what you meant hairy Smile
Honestly babe, I think it'll be fine, I was 6+1 when they scanned me on Monday but my gestational age was more like 5+1 they only just saw the sac... keep the faith Smile

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 16:27

Thanks everyone, it so helps to know you are all virtually holding my hand.

Have had cuddles with DP this afternoon, and had a little sleep on the sofa.

Mamap thank you :)

I've just looked at the note again (DP took a sneaky picture of it on his phone) and it says
MSD (which I'm led to believe is 'mean sac diameter') is 7.4mm, don't know if that's normal or not at this stage.

Don't know about the rest of you but I want to know every detail, I'm sure I drive the doctors crazy!

Wombat33 · 04/02/2011 16:43

Hairy that sounds positive news. Glad you are getting another test too. At least they (and your DP) seem to be looking after you. I don't know anything about mean sac diameter I'm afraid but am hoping someone else will! xx

PinkFondantFancy · 04/02/2011 16:55

hairy that is great news - sounds like your HCG is right on track. I just wanted to back up what choccie said - when I went for a scan at 6 weeks they said they were only scanning to see whether there was a pregnancy in the right place and that I shouldn't necessarily expect to see anything because things change so rapidly, a conception date a few days either way makes a big difference. Also, the clinic where I went only does internal scans for early scans - from what little experience I have it seems they can see more that way so I'm sorry they stressed you out with the abdominal one.

I just went for a walk to clear the cobwebs a bit which started off well going round the park but ended in Morrisons buying fondant fancies.......

PinkFondantFancy · 04/02/2011 16:56

Sorry no idea about sac diameter by the way but sounds like a decent size though??

Emoo · 04/02/2011 17:06

Hairy - glad you are getting some tlc in RL as well as from here. It's going to be a horrid and scary wait for you, but at least you know it's not ectopic, and that your hcg is rising, and that's all a good start.

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 17:08

thanks again all.

The sonographer was lovely but she was the one that was basically negative, the consultant (or rather, registrar, I think) was more positive about it.

I just hated the whole process of getting in there, having to lie down and look at the ceiling, nothing being said... then having to go into the room where they put the upset people, to wait (same room I was put in when I got the MMC result). I wish I never had to darken those doors again, I really do!

Gosh, Pinky good for you going out for a walk in this weather!

owlbooty · 04/02/2011 17:13

Hairy lovely, so pleased the hcg looks sensible and that you are getting plenty of support from your DP. Consultant is absolutely right about how long eggs and sperm live so I suggest we all just steal Pink 's fondant fancies, have a relaxing evening and hopefully a good night's sleep.

I did some properly barking mad mentalling this morning that I would just like to share with you. I got a stupid letter from my GP saying they had the results of a urine sample and wanted me to book a routine appt. Cue immediate panic. My first thought was (genuinely, honestly): "argh! what if they have found I am not actually pregnant??"

Please deploy largest fish available at first possible opportunity.

hairyfairylights · 04/02/2011 17:18

Owly thanks, and bless you with the urine test. I did one at the hospital today, and had the same thought 'what if it's negative'?

PinkFondantFancy · 04/02/2011 17:20

owly you are barking!!! :D You've seen little owlbean doing headstands!! hahahaha (((hugs))) What did the GP want though?? It pigs me off they send scary stuff like that - I've had things like that before and it turns out that all they want is a routine asthma checkup or something non-life threatening.

Emoo · 04/02/2011 17:20

PS there's also mini battenburgs here - I probably shouldn't eat 11 cakes by myself.....
