Hi,

We were talking about this a lot on the charting thread and thought it would be good to start a separate thread.

There's about 3 of us at the moment but please do join us too if you are TTC with this added probem.

My results were 9.07 and then a few weeks later 5.5. I'm due another blood test in 5 weeks and hopefully my GP should be starting me on Thyroxin soon.

Quite worried cos the NHS guidelines say your numbers should be a lot lower when pregnant. still i haven't got that BFP yet so I guess I'll worry then.

ladygonegaga and Bessie26 - hurry up and join me here Grin.

Well I'm a bit nervous reading that SuperSunny, T4 was 16 but TSH was 0.07
Doctor thought reducing dose would make me feel more tired as 16 isn't all that high. I wonder if this could cause me problems?
I remember being pg in Jan and the TSH level was 3. Think I'm just all over the place.

iggy - I agree with super, defo go back to your Dr if you are concerned. (I write down a list of questions and take them in with me). Perhaps take the [http://www.cks.nhs.uk/hypothyroidism/management/quick_answers/scenario_hypothyroidism_and_pregnancy/pre_existing_overt_hypothyroidism NHS Guidance] with you too?

twopeople thanks for the message - it's good to be reminded that having a dodgy thyroid isn't the end of the world! Smile

Iggi999 · 06/10/2010 13:31

Thanks for those messages, I'm due to be retested in a couple of weeks so will see if there's a change. I think doc expecting levels to be messed up still following recent mc, changes in dosage.
It's so complicated though, the advice is to be between 0.4 - 2 for TSH (which I'm below) but to be in the upper end of the reference range for T4 (which I wasn't) so a reduction in dose would make TSH go up but T4 go down!
When I ttc DS I worried about none of these things. Those were easier times Smile

Hi there I have read all your comments with great interest as found out today I too have an under active thyroid and the doc has prescibed me 25mcg thyroxine. my partner and I have been TTC since July but I have been on depo since Jan. Please can anyone tell me how long it will take to conceive whilst on thyroxine

By the way, what does BFP stand for? thanks.
Louin

Louin · 11/10/2010 23:07

Hello supersunnyday ha thanks for telling me the answer I feel such a numpty now - i did a preg test yesterday but maybe it was too soon? anyway, have a good day and will kp you posted as to what is going on :)

Iggi999 · 12/10/2010 15:42

Hi, in theory once you are (what's the word? euthyroid? or did I make that up Smile ) stabilised on the thyroxine, you should be back to having the same chances of conception as anyone else. So, how long is a piece of string is the real question!

Louin · 12/10/2010 16:54

yay! onwards and upwards then :)

Another one with hypothyroidism here. I'm on cycle 5 of TTC #1, been taking thyroxine around 5 years. I don't think in my case it's the thyroid that's the problem, it's more likely to be fibroids. I know when I've been undermedicated in the past it alters my cycle but that's all tickety boo right now.

Surprised at the people saying they've got TSH of over 10 but doctor's who are unsure about medicating. Clinical guidelines say treat anyone with TSH raised above upper limit of normal who also have positive anti thyroid antibodies and treat even in the absence of antibodies if the TSH is greater than 10. My TSH was only just over 5 when I was first medicated, but my antibodies were in the thousands.

Incidentally, my sister was told she might have trouble conceiving when she was first diagnosed so if they were thinking of trying it might be better to do it sooner rather than later. (age 33) She got pregnant first try (not even first cycle first try!).

hi guys, hope you are all keeping well & doing plenty of SWI!

hippy hope you are well? haven't heard from you in ages! Did you get re-tested?

mummysleepy how's the pg going? did you get your dosage increased?

I've now been on the meds for a month & am going for another blood test tomorrow. Will be interesting to see what has happened to my levels as I am almost 14wks pg now. Although I feel much less tired (my only symptom) since starting the meds, I am still tired & wonder if I need my dosage increased (am on 25mcg).

Hi to all the new people am re-posting this link to the NHS guidance incase any of you find it useful (my GP had no idea my TSH should be that low when TTC!)

sneakapeak · 14/10/2010 09:43

Hi everyone.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when my DD was 4/5 months old, so about 5/6 months ago.
Never had problems before.

I have no idea about levels and what they should and shouldn't be but i remember my Doc saying after last blood test "your level is fine your 2.9" Hmm.

I've just stumbled across this thread and im a bit Shock. I didn't know it could cause miscarraiges and problems conceiving or with unborn children.

I've been thinking about having a third next year. What do I do if I TTC?
I fell PG immedietely with both of mine so id hate to wait until I was 6 weeks PG before hearing the level was high. Would Doc just up your dose before TTC?

IggitheImpaler · 14/10/2010 13:22

Hello. Glad you are getting the medication you need. There isn't a proven link between thyroid problems and mc. I think, for example, my mcs are to do with my age rather than underactive thyroid. Who knows. The main problems would come with an untreated thyroid problem. This would get even worse if you were pregnant. My suggestion (what my gp does) is get blood test before starting ttc, to see you are in the right place then. Once you get a BFP, gp will up your dose by about 25mg, and redo your bloods at regular intervals. They will raise or lower your dose as required. Some areas can refer you to an endocrine for monitoring during pregnancy.
Loads of people with thyroid condition have babies, try not to worry, just stay on top of it. [Smile]
This will prob post twice, can't sort out my phone!

Hey SSD, always best to agree with me I find! Off on holiday tomorrow which will coincide (I think) with this month's "week". So fingers crossed etc.
Get my latest bloods back on Monday. GP tried once again to explain how exactly the thyroid gland works and I nodded and tried to look like I got it. Not stupid in general, but just can't get thyroid function straight in my head! Though who cares as long as it works Gin
