Hi,

We were talking about this a lot on the charting thread and thought it would be good to start a separate thread.

There's about 3 of us at the moment but please do join us too if you are TTC with this added probem.

My results were 9.07 and then a few weeks later 5.5. I'm due another blood test in 5 weeks and hopefully my GP should be starting me on Thyroxin soon.

Quite worried cos the NHS guidelines say your numbers should be a lot lower when pregnant. still i haven't got that BFP yet so I guess I'll worry then.

ladygonegaga and Bessie26 - hurry up and join me here Grin.

Hello ladies, would love to join your group on here :) am looking for some advice as you all seem very knowledgable! Bit of background: was diagnosed as hypothyroid when my DD was about 4 months old. I'm currently on 125mcg of levothyroxine a day. Went and had thyroid blood tests done early this month in preparation for ttc, and then found out yesterday that I'm pregnant (approx 4 weeks) Have not been feeling right thyroid wise, ringing in ears and feeling cold and tired etc. but I got the blood test results back and apparently my free T4 levels are too high (22.5) my TSH was 0.06. The doctor said to decrease my dose by 25mcg - but everything I've read suggests I should be increasing my dose!? So I'm very worried and confused. I've asked for a referral from my doctor but I'm worried this will just take too long, so I'm considering seeing a private endocrinologist. Just wondered if anyone out there has been in a similar position or can please offer any advice?

Hi may I joint a this late stage? I am TTC with an underactive thyroid, this thread is huge so I have not read all of it, but I was on another one which the advice we were getting was about getting your TSH to between 1-2. Mine currently 3.6, but my gp has agreed to up my dose of Levothyroxine, although he did say here was probably no need and no evidence to support/suggest that it was necessary, before concieding that he was probably just not aware of it and gave me the prescription. I have nly seen an endo dr when I was pg with my last ds (who took over 2 years to concieve) Is there anything else? My neighbour has reccomended sea kelp to support my thyroid as well, has anyone tried this?

Hello again

Sorry to only post for advice, but I got my results today at 28 weeks pg, and I hope someone can tell me whether I should be concerned or not?

TSH is now 2.3 (was 1.39 at 17 weeks)
Free T4 is now 11.3 (was 13.3 at 17 weeks)

Should I be taking thyroxine again do you think?

PopcornMouseInBoots · 15/03/2012 17:18

I would want to, at that rate of increase, tether - it's not too bad atm but if it's on the rise you need to be careful - however, I'm not sure if a GP would actually agree to it at 2.3, iyswim. At the very least I'd insist on being closely monitored i.e. another test in 4 weeks.

Ah Popcorn, thanks for your response (again!) Smile

I have had a return of symptoms in the past three weeks and had just put it down to getting more pregnant, so am a bit concerned. Bugger. Is the GP likely to ignore as it's in the range or treat as it's gone up do you think?

I am at UCLH, so I wonder if it's worth trying to get a referral to the doctor mentioned earlier in the thread...

PopcornMouseInBoots · 15/03/2012 17:26

It depends on the GP, ime - mine would monitor it and retest in a month before putting my meds up, but she's new I think and not as gung-ho!

tethersend · 15/03/2012 17:34

Thanks too, nappy Smile good to know you had similar numbers and all was well. The problems with my thyroid weren't discovered until DD was one, so I have no idea what my levels were when I was pg with her.

tethersend · 15/03/2012 17:36

Have an appointment next week, so will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again Smile

I think you mean tether, nappy - not moi :)

PopcornMouseInBoots · 15/03/2012 17:41

xpost! :o

AThingInYourLife · 15/03/2012 17:49

Just realised that this thread is for pg women too - I used to lurk and found it so useful when TTC :)

tethers - with those numbers and symptoms I would be asking to go onto thyroxine, and being quite insistent about it.

Are you under consultant care for thyroid problems? GPs can be a pita about thyroxine.

As my endocrinologist says - "babies LOVE thyroxine" :o

Am under consultant led care as am having an elcs, but my thyroid was behaving normally before I got pg and in early pregnancy, so not been flagged as having any sort of thyroid issue at all.

The midwife today advised me to go to my GP; I should really have asked for an in-house referral to the team at UCLH.

AThingInYourLife · 15/03/2012 18:11

Thanks nappy - I'm 24 weeks pregnant, so BFP was quite a while ago :o

Got it less than one cycle after I started on 50mcg thyroxine :)

tethers - ah, in that case definitely do the hospital-specific thing recommended here.

Those numbers aren't terrible, I wouldn't be worrying about the baby or anything.

I just think it's going the wrong way, and you are symptomatic, and they need to take that seriously and not fob you off with "within normal ranges" bullshit.

You shouldn't have to spend your pregnancy even more exhausted than necessary because they are waiting for you to pass some largely artificial threshold.

If you can get yourself onto the lists if the thyroid clinic people, it should help.

:)

minipie · 15/03/2012 18:18

AThing out of curiosity how long were you trying before you went on thyroxine, and how underactive was your thyroid (if you can remember?)

AThingInYourLife · 15/03/2012 18:38

mini - I was trying for 10 months

I wasn't technically hypothyroid at all - TSH around 2.8 when I got treatment.

I was hypo for me though - I had a half thyroidectomy in Nov 2010, before that my TSH levels were around 1.6 or so.

Even though I was symptomatic and they had cut half my thyroid gland out of my body, it still took a lot of arguing and persistence to be taken seriously Hmm :o

I was having pre-menstrual spotting, which I think was due to low progesterone levels, because my hormones were all out of balance.

minipie · 15/03/2012 19:14

Thanks AThing.

I've been trying for 9 months, just got put on thyroxine last month. I also wasn't technically hypothyroid in that although I was hypothyroid in one sense (TSH of 10) my T3 and T4 levels were normal

I also have pre menstrual spotting.

Maybe I will be like you and the 50mcg thyroxine will be enough to do the job
