Reallygrumpy, I read this thread out to my DP the other day and he too looked a bit worried then said did I think he was a spunk machine. I said yes. He then said 'i think you should stay off mumsnet it's giving you some weird ideas'. To which I said 'hahaha, that's exactly what reallygrumpys fella said'. What's wrong with cAlling him a spunk machine! I though he'd be chuffed I thought he was such a stud but apparently he just felt like an object. :-).
We haven't been the three a day type for some years now, we still do maybe on occasion if we have a quiet Sunday but they tend to be short frantic sessions more than anything but are still plenty of fun!! My mate swears by three time a day purely for conception purposes. Well, that's what she told nubby!!

KnitterNotTwitter · 01/09/2010 10:23

ooooh perhaps i'm your mate - wonder if I know you in RL... not going to out myself though as then I'd need to think of another MNet name and I like this one :)

If you are trying to get pregnant then 3 times a day is too much! You decrease the quality and quantity of sperm. So even though it seems like a grand idea, it isn't.

Once a day or even once every other day is recommended.

KnitterNotTwitter · 01/09/2010 14:14

daisy I think that's only true if you have sperm production problems or low sperm count.... Would google to back my statement up but am at work and would alert the internet police....

FWIW it's worked 3 times for us - i.e. we've got pregnant first month three times...

I was told that by the Head of Obs and Gynae at a London hospital (she's a friend, not my doctor) and I have read the same in a few books.

Question is, how do you know if you have super sperm and three times a day is fine for you?

Of course it will work for lots of people. Lots of people get pregnant on the first try. It is advice to maximise your chances.

KnitterNotTwitter · 02/09/2010 10:39

here you go

Sex every day is prescription for improving sperm quality

It's in The Times so it must be true :)

hmmm - actually that article more backs up the once a day than the 3x a day strategy.... darn didn't read it properly before posting... :)

Anyway it works for us so we'll keep at it (oooh er!)...

There is a big difference between three times a day and 'daily', which assumes once a day. I suspect that by the third ejaculate the poor guy is releasing pure water Wink, in which case, what is the point? 24 hours between ejaculating will allow the sperm numbers to increase to a decent level. As so many sperm die on the journey to the egg, its all about probability and survival due to numbers.

I think to maintain both sperm count and importantly quality (good, intact DNA that will help make a healthy foetus) once a day is the best bet.

Bless you though - three times a day? How can you walk......

Ouchie · 02/09/2010 10:52

Sorry OP - cross post.

Honestly, once a day is plenty. Take the pressure off, as well.

KnitterNotTwitter · 24/09/2010 16:47

PAh... well just thought I'd update you all.

DH and I (in a totally non-scientific study) aimed for every other day last month. AF just got me...

So we've agreed we'll aim for 3x a day again next month and see what happens...

What we found was that if we aimed for every other day it became less of a 'thing' and so we maybe actually only managed every 2 or 3 days. But if we're aiming for 3x a day then we definitely manage 2x and sometimes 3x...

does that make sense?

Anyway - we'll see what happens next month...

Knitter have you using opk sticks so you know the best time to get going? That way you can narrow down the best days to shag like crazy and just have sex every other day for the rest of your cycle? This conceiving business is killing my DP because the more I get the more I want if that makes sense, leave it a few days and it wanes but if I have sex in the morning I can guarantee I want it after work and at bed time too. Don't want to wear him out though!!

KnitterNotTwitter · 27/09/2010 15:03

I've used opk a few times (bought 50 off ebay) but never actually picked up my surge if that makes sense - I thought we'd missed things the month that we actually got pregnant with the one that I miscarried...

I think Tony Weshler in TCOYF says that in the fertile time quantity is best (except if you have sperm production issues, then you would do every other day). Even if on SWI two and three the count is less than in the first one of the day, still the combined amount of sperm from three shags would be greater than from one shag.

But I think I would just get too sore - hats off to you, Knitter!

BrownB · 28/09/2010 11:53

Knitter - sounds as if it works for you, so GOOD LUCK!! Here's hoping the next one is a sticky in the womb-y one...! Wink
