Happy new year everyone!

New thread for 2010

OP posts:
CatherineHMumsnet · 07/10/2010 14:02

The links are there because we wanted more people to know about our lovely competitions.

snice · 07/10/2010 14:09

Yes I get that but without wanting to sound like a whinger I want the winners to be MNetters not people who are just entering the competitions.

Actually scrub all that I just want the winner to be me

BadgersArse · 07/10/2010 14:12

i agree
there should be a " must have posted say 10 times" condition

OracleInaCoracle · 07/10/2010 14:19

totally agree.

rebeccamumsnet · 07/10/2010 14:47

Badgers and snice: we understand what you're saying but, even if we wanted to, we can't manipulate our comps to make only certain people eligible to win. That would be against the law (in a Blue Peter/Ant&Dec entry-rigging kind of way) and we would be living in fear of a visit from the Competitions Police with their scary compliance truncheons.

You have to be a proper, signed up Mumsnetter to be eligible to win - but that's as far as we can go. Everything else has to be strictly done out at random by a clever bot in the corner - we don't even get to pull the names out of the hat ourselves any more.

Blatherskite · 07/10/2010 15:50

I'm not sure I like the new comps. They're too easy. The Jordans one even defaulted to the right answer for me!! Shock It wasn't even the top answer!

Not that it would have taken more than half a brain cell to read something from one paragraph and select the relevant button 2 inches further down.

We're going to get inundated with professional compers now who will have a MN nickname just to answer the comps and will bring nothing to the forum.

At least with the old comps, you had to add a baby name or a recipe or a review etc and therefore added something to MN. All the new format will do is give the prizes to anyone who can be bothered to fill out the registration form. I bet very few real MNers will get the prizes now which is a real pity.

rebeccamumsnet · 07/10/2010 15:56

and the winners for the September competitions are..

stealthsquiggle wins the two-night break for two adults and two children to Gleneagles, congratulations! Grin

Metrobaby bags the Sonos ZonePlayer S5.

rosie17 is off to the Royal Albert Hall to watch the Masters Tennis, enjoy.

First place in the Green Giant competition is flamingtoaster who wins the 42" plasma and family meal time kit and the two runners up are Helzbea and Katz who each win a family meal kit.

Well done everyone.

Emails are on the way, please check your spam and respond asap.

rebeccamumsnet · 07/10/2010 17:02

Hi Blatherskite, we do understand where you are coming from, but looking at our new joiner stats today, we have seen nothing unusual.

What we have seen is a huge leap in the number of entrants to our competitions, which means Mumsnetters are voting with their feet.

We will, however, keep an eye on this over the next few months.

Katz · 07/10/2010 17:11

Thank you

MsBlueSky · 07/10/2010 17:35

I expect it would be simple enought to change the competition entry style next month to make it a bit harder.
I used to get annoyed at the requirement to add tips or baby names as there are only so many I can come up with.

FallingWithStyle · 07/10/2010 17:57

Some of those people haven't even posted!
Linking to comp sites is a bit crap imo - and I never normally moan about MN decisions.

kelandab · 07/10/2010 18:07

Thank you!! Will be putting it away for my nephews christmas present!!

I regards to the 'professional comper' debate, I would class myself as a partime comper BUT I am also a mum to two girls and although I may not post on here, I do read others posts and come on here often.

rebeccamumsnet · 07/10/2010 18:50

Hi falling,
In response to 'Some of those people haven't even posted!' It just goes to show that the system is random and the winners for September were from the old competitions style.

No matter what we do, we will get a huge variety of entrants from those who post several times a day to those who rarely (if ever) post. To make it fair (and legal) we cannot select winners based on how often they post.

We will look again at making the questions a little harder next month.

nobiggy · 07/10/2010 19:19

Thank you! The DDs will be thrilled!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 07/10/2010 19:42

Hi rebecca, I have no issue with the new comps system.
What I wanted to add was that there is a site I go onto where you have to have been a member for 10 days and to have posted at least 10 times before you get to even view certain parts of the forum, It wouldn't stop professional comps people signing in and posting enough to get through the first bit etc but I just thought I would share that this is something that happens on diffreent site I frequent.

amistillsexy · 08/10/2010 13:22

Thank you!!!
Have been having a really stressful week, and read your email telling me I'd won just as the phone rang-it was the bank arranging to refund a load of money I'd paid to a company who immediately went bust!
I'm now having a great day and have just phoned DH who was sitting at his desk being miserable but now even he's cheered up!
DSs have never had the chance to use a camcorder, but have used VTech cameras at pre-school. They'll have great fun with this.
Thank you again!

OracleInaCoracle · 08/10/2010 13:27

bythepowerofgreyskull, that happens on a forum i used to use too. ive won a few times and am v grateful, but would be pissed orf if a non-mner won.

stealthsquiggle · 08/10/2010 16:21

I may have only been lurking in the last few months, greyskull, but I am definitely a MNer...

bakingcakes · 09/10/2010 14:30

flamingtoaster · 10/10/2010 07:55

Thank you very much - I am still amazed and delighted (I'm working my way down from the total shock which overtook me when I read your e-mail on Friday)! I've replied as requested. OH, DS and DD are already planning what they are going to watch/play on it - we have a small TV so it's going to be quite an upgrade! Thanks!!!!

mumbar · 10/10/2010 20:15
