every sodding year mil nags us to get up - i can hear her asking my dp if i'm up yet. at 8.00 usually. it's bugging me so much - sometimes i lie in bed just to wind her up.

i probably just feel mil dominates it year after year and i'd just like it to be myself, dp and my sons

maybe you all get on great with your mils

I think that 8am is pretty early! Your dp needs to tell her to calm down, but please don't miss your kids opening their pressies, it's the best bit, surely?

pagwatch · 24/12/2009 17:48

Wake up first and take her a cup of tea.
You will freak her out.

If you don't like her all the more reason NOT to let her wind you up on christmas day

PoppyIsApain · 24/12/2009 18:08

My mum used to run around in excitement at 5-6am, she has relaxed abit now and have arranged to wake her at 8am tomorrow

Marne · 24/12/2009 18:21

8am is not early, i hope the dd's are up by 6.30 as we are going out at 10am so i need them to open presents early. knowing my luck they will decide to stay in bed until 9am .

6pm - that's what I call a lie ine!

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 24/12/2009 18:38

Watch - thats really funny!!!

Ivy, Im the same, wake up at around 6am, then wait for dd but by 7am I'm really desperate for her to wake up. Think it will be diffeent this year as we both have nasty coughs.

Mind you whenever we've gone to someone elses for Christmas dd then has woken at the crack of dawn and I've has to entertain her til others get up.

nikki1978 · 24/12/2009 18:46

Well are your kids up already waiting for you so they can open their presents (or opening them without you) or does your MIL try to wake you all up?

Can't tell if YABU until you answer that

beyondfurious · 24/12/2009 18:48

DD has a stocking in her room which contains a dvd/sweets etc - she can then watch it til we get up at 9-ish and then we all have main presents.

She's 11 though so very happy to watch a cool new dvd.

LilyBolero · 24/12/2009 18:50

my kids don't get up early on Christmas Day - usually about 8.30. But we don't do any presents until the afternoon, so there isn't the mad 'get out of bed and open presents'.

hellsbelles · 24/12/2009 19:02

jeep - I do understand from reading your posts that it's the fact your MIL is dictating that is upsetting you...but to be honest (and I'm guessing you are seeing this from the other posts) I think it is pretty standard to have to get up very early on Christmas morning....

For me watching DC's open their stockings is the best bit of the whole day. Just try and forget about MIL - infact why don't you get up even earlier than her so it's you dictating the timings?

TheArmadillo · 24/12/2009 19:02

I'm up before ds and then I drive dp mad saying 'can we wake him yet'.

Um I get a little over excited at christmas

CherryChristmasEveryone · 24/12/2009 19:04

i am always up first on christmas morning, usually around 6am! i have a cup of coffee (or 6) and a couple of fags then get the kids up about 7.

Guad · 24/12/2009 19:31

We always opened our stockings on our own when we were little but I make mine bring them in to me as I want to see them open them!

They certainly aren't allowed downstairs before me, but I do say they must stay in bed till 8am. Well, I say it every year but they don't, usually about 7pm which is bearable I think. I can't function at 6.

NotANewbie · 24/12/2009 19:35

Do we have any choice?

I look forward to next year, when ds2 will be in a bed, and won't need anyone to get him up, and maybe they'll just go downstairs and demolish their stockings and let us sleep.

Too much to ask them to demolish their stockings quietly, I suppose.

GrumpyWhenWoken · 24/12/2009 19:43

Whilst I'd like to be up to see their faces, I fear they will get up before me and open them before I'm awake... If it's stupid o'clock I'll get them in my bed til morning!

This year though I'm giving the main presents, so I've said they have to wait until it's getting light to get those!

We used to open ours on our own when we were children - only because of the early morning thing - although I'd be grateful for an 8 o'clock start any day!

Hope you have a lovely Christmas

Ivykaty44 · 24/12/2009 20:30

even as a teenager after a night on the tiles - I was still up at the crak of dawn to open the pressies and see the family.....

I have a dd11 who wants to get up - but sleeps to long and a dd17 who has gone to the pub to meet her friends about 10 minutes ago - I have told her to be home for midnight or she will not get out of bed in the morning and I want them

UP to shout its Christmas...

nickytwotimes · 24/12/2009 20:40

Jeezo, why would anyone not want to see the pressies being opened?

Very unusual.

tulpe · 24/12/2009 20:41

My DCs usually get up around 7am. Their stockings will be at the end of their beds but they bring them in to our room and open them with us (we set the coffee machine onto auto for 6.45 so we have sustenance ).

We then have a big breakfast, get washed & dressed and open presents about 10.30am.

jeep · 24/12/2009 20:44

argh everyone is mis-interpreting what i mean!

OP posts:
tulpe · 24/12/2009 20:46

Jeep - do you mean that it is the fact that MIL INSISTS you get up which winds you up?

If so, yes, I would probably do the same as you and annoy her by staying in bed
