We can't think of what to have on xmas day as dessert so I am looking for inspiration.

We don't like christmas pudding or anything heavy.

Last year we had a lemony souffle thing from M&S which looked fantastic but didn't taste as good as it looked.

I know its a bit last minute but any thoughts ?

Lime cheesecake? I think there's someone here who made her own this year.

cookielove · 23/12/2009 21:52

baked alaska very yummy and very easy to make

Clary · 23/12/2009 21:52

I am doing chocolate mousse cake (baked in oven) which is really lovely.

Other ideas include choc mousse, always a winner, or creme brulee (I can't do that as grill is broken ) or maybe a pavlova?

Have also nicked idea of a fruit platter (strawberries, rasps, mango, pineapple, kiwi, whatever other fancy fruit you like) from a pal.

Clary · 23/12/2009 21:53

oooh yy baked alaska is a winner surely, see Nigella's Feast for recipe.

giddyupRudolph · 23/12/2009 21:53

I make trifle

cookielove · 23/12/2009 21:54

Fruitbatlings · 23/12/2009 21:54

Trifle, all day long

Ivykaty44 · 23/12/2009 21:55

deliahs lemon suprise pudding - easy to make and you could make now and pop in tupperware in fridge and cook on the day

Clary · 23/12/2009 22:17

yy = yes yes, ie enthusiastic agreement

LittleMontyontheDustyRoad · 23/12/2009 22:20

I'm doing a trifle and an Eton Mess (only because I bought some gorgeous glass dessert dishes lol).

Don't like xmas pudding or mince pies, have bought them and binned them for years.

Clary · 23/12/2009 22:28

oooh Eton Mess yummy.

It may come to that here actually if the pavlova doesn't go as planned (going to make it tomorrow now).

upafrozenhill · 23/12/2009 22:36

I put frozen fruit, double cream and a bit of icing sugar in the processor, blend and freeze. Serve on a merangure nest and put a dusting of hot choc powder over.Dead easy and very quick.
Some nice ideas.

I'll think about others and get back!

Ponymum · 23/12/2009 22:37

I saw this icecream thing on Jamie's Christmas that looked quite interesting. Looks easy - line a bowl with pannetone slices, slosh in some booze, fill up with icecream with yummy bits mixed in, stick in the freezer until needed, drizzle with melted chocolate before serving. Recipe here.

5inthesleighbed · 23/12/2009 22:38

I saw a lovely picture of an inside out trifle M&S have. Looked really yummy.

dizzycringles · 23/12/2009 22:40

white chocolate cheesecake - tis easy, very easy and loved by ALL - my most requested recipe

LittleMontyontheDustyRoad · 23/12/2009 22:40

Clary - I bought a Pavlova base for the Eton Mess.

dizzycringles · 23/12/2009 22:41

white chocolate cheesecake here

Mercedes · 23/12/2009 23:24

thanks for all the suggestions.

my dp hates cheesecake so that's out.

as I'm not very good at cakes and baking I'm not sure about some of the ideas but they sound fab.. its a shame my cooking skills are not up to thrm.

upafrozenhill - i like your idea of frozen fruit and meringues but how much frozen fruit and how much cream?

Clary · 24/12/2009 00:55

mercedes choc mousse is v v easy, Delia's recipe here tho I find it serves more than she says.

monty, I reckon buying meringue for Eton Mess is totally reasonable. After all, you are only going to crush it!

MrsKitty · 24/12/2009 04:38

I'm doing this...Hope it turns out OK as there will be no alternative [worried face]

ClaudiaSchiffer · 24/12/2009 05:31

I'm doing a Banoffee pie. Easy peasy I hope as have never made one before. I have just boiled 2 cans of condensed milk for 2 hrs to make the toffee - am a bit scared to open them to be honest in case there is some crystalised crap in there instead of luscious toffee.

Also may do a pavlova with cherries or just fruit and ice-cream.

nooka · 24/12/2009 06:02

I made a mincemeat icecream one year, hollowed out a plain Panetone cake (I found one like a Christmas tree at John Lewis) and stuffed the icecream in the middle. Then dusted it with icing sugar and served with chocolate and toffee sauce. It was very yummy and looked very grand. The icecream recipe came from Mary Berry.

bebesequin · 24/12/2009 08:22

Got to be trifle making it this am just going to open the sherry

JackTheHallsWithBauersOfHolly · 24/12/2009 08:28

Ugh, trifle.

I haven't thought about pudding yet
Was thinking of either baked alaska or chocolate bomb that I saw on here and can't find again.....

Louise2004 · 24/12/2009 08:50

My mum used to make a very easy orange dish, basically sliced oranges soaked in their juice with some cointreau, served with ice cream or cream (she also had it with brown sugar as she has an exceptionally sweet tooth). Clary's idea of a fruit platter idea is also light, easy and would give everyone a choice of fruit.
