Mine's rather tricky I'll give you an example;

My mum found a pack of supermarket pants in their wardrobe and so took them out of the packet and put them away....My dad found them and was very disappointed to say the least as she was meant to wrap them up for him as his present from her! Terrible, terrible! Must be to do with having only an orange each year when he was growing up

VinegarTinselTits · 11/12/2009 11:49

OrmIrian · 11/12/2009 11:50

Books - Something called 'By Hook or by Crook' about the idiosyncracies of the use English around the country. And 'White Ravens' a retelling of the Mabinogion.

borderslass · 11/12/2009 11:52

got fil a voucher for comet as he loves his gadgets he's 75 and they live 450 miles away so sending something costs to much.

merlin · 11/12/2009 12:26

Got theatre vouchers for the P's together. Oh and some of their fave chocs!!

Sidge · 11/12/2009 12:32

Just bought FIL (75) a digital photo frame and some USB flash memory.

He's a bit of a silver surfer technogeek!

purpleturtle · 11/12/2009 12:39

Did my usual trick and browsed the Sports section in the bookshop. Came away with a couple of books on the Olympics - one on London 1908 and one on London 1948. He'll be well-informed for 2012.

TeaOneSugar · 11/12/2009 12:46

FIL

A christmas jumper, actually quite a trendy one, but still a christmas jumper.

He'll also be sharing the Calendar with pictures of dd (from baby to 5), with the MIL.

For his Boxing day birthday - a huge box of chocolates.

ApuskiDusky · 11/12/2009 12:52

For Dad - A weather station, so he can obsess plan what to wear for the next day's golf.

Last year I gave mum and dad a joint present - a scanner for all their old photos on slides.

plumpud · 11/12/2009 12:58

dad is getting a stocking filled with old fashioned sweets, mini xmas cake, marmalades and chutneys and a little toy car ( as this was the best christmas pressy he can remember from childhood lol), satsuma and nuts, little journal and a nice pen.

Mums is similar but for mum.

Have trouble every year with them, so I thought I'd recreate ( and beef up a bit), their childhood stockings

Maize · 11/12/2009 13:03

My dad - Star Trek DVD, What Car subscription, jumper, talc
My FIL - hacksaw , mini mechano set, and something else I forget...

MrsJohnDeere · 11/12/2009 13:23

Mine (also 70) is getting a Christian Woolmar [sp?] book about railways, a bottle of whisky, and a half share in a photo of the dcs in a frame (joint gift with my mother).

norksinmywaistband · 11/12/2009 13:26

Walking socks
Chutney
Quiz style book
Half share in DC's school photos and teatowel from DS' preschool

ThumbleBells · 11/12/2009 13:28

Dad is now 76 but the only thing he wants (and he has actually requested it) is a mug with a photo of DS on it . Not my kind of thing AT ALL, but both my sibs have inflicted given similar, so he doesn't want my DS to be the only one missing. Ah well, tis his choice.
I am no longer allowed to give him:
books (too many)
DVDs (he never watches them)
sweets (he's worried about his waistline)

If I really want to push the boat out then some new pyjamas are a good plan, but I got him 2 pairs last year, so he's good for another couple of years with them.

hatwoman · 11/12/2009 14:36

a voucher to go out for lunch - for him and his wife. they don't get out much and I don;t know what "things" they have/don;t have/would like/need. I'm quite pleased actually - it's a gorgeous country location, very nice restaurant and I think they'll be really pleased.

hatwoman · 11/12/2009 14:37

apuskiDusky - where did you get the weather station from?

ApuskiDusky · 11/12/2009 17:45

hatwoman: um, amazon I think..

this one

RockBird · 11/12/2009 17:54

My brother and I have clubbed together and got him a Wii. He's had an iPod, Sat Nav, dvd recorder blah blah. Problem is he doesn't really want anything but he does so much for us that we feel we have to get him something good. And before anyone says it, he's really not a goat sort of person!

Takver · 11/12/2009 18:42

Dad - 75 - two jazz cds. He's very hard to buy for - used to always get books but these days prefers the library (lack of shelf space). I spent ages on MySpace etc trying to find some contemporary jazz that he wouldn't have heard of and would like, keeping my fingers crossed that at least one will hit the spot . . .

FiL has a new clamp for his lathe - chosen by DH, which hopefully he will find more exciting than it sounds!

MrsMuddle · 11/12/2009 19:45

I've got mine a subscription to Oldie magazine, although I'm going to keep details of the weather station for his birthday in February.

mistletoemulledwinemoodlum · 11/12/2009 20:11

I've got mine the Times' Cartoonist's book of the year's cartoons. And a bottle of port.
