After watching Delia the other night and having a Polish Christmas Eve tow years ago which was 7 courses!!!!!! I would like a light but festive Christmas Eve dinner. Not to heavy as it puts me right off as we are going for the full works on Christmas day. Anything that doesn't require to much work or a lot of freezing as we only have a small freezer. All tips will be gratefully received

we usually have ham egg and chips on christmas eve!

Greensleeves · 03/12/2009 12:02

we will be having beef stew and dumplings

after that Christmas Eve is Snowman Night chez greeny - we make snowman biscuits and decorate and eat them, then we make snowmen out of cotton wool/crafty stuff and put them all over the house, the boys have new snowman PJs, and then we have hot chocolate with marshmallows and watch The Snowman before bed

Its take away night here I think.

However,y personal Eve fave is a decent fish pie, with a simple green salad or veg.

Fish pie I love Fish Pie but we have that nearly every week. Keep the ideas coming. take-aways will be out for us. Oh! Fish pie with flaky pasty that's an idea

Gammon joint, mash and cauliflower cheese (made with wholegrain mustard). You can then use the left over gammon in a turkey & ham pie on Boxing Day.

I'm making a casserole thingummy with lamb shanks and will have it with salad and nice bread.

Buda · 03/12/2009 13:00

My Dad usually makes lasanga with garlic bread and salad.

pinksky · 03/12/2009 13:03

I'm making falafel - just fun/sociable, easy to make and a change from the heavy festive food.

I love ham but tend to do that on boxing day.

flatmouse · 03/12/2009 13:03

curry - made in slow cooker - not sure yet if chicken or lamb, with sauces from butchers which are fabulous!

RupertTheBear · 03/12/2009 13:05

We always have fish - either nice fish pie (Jamie's) or a whole baked salmon with new potatoes and green veg. This year my outlaws are coming and mil is allergic to all fish so after sulking for a bit I have decided on paella (non fish version). We all went to Spain together this year and I brought a paella pan back and they keep asking (hinting) if I have tried it out yet!

Last year I made a lovely chicken and spinach curry, which is actually quite light, and then a clementine and muscat jelly from a recipe in the Waitrose magazine which was refeshing and delicious but still christmassy. And highly amusing as the only jelly mould I have is shaped like a pig .

nickelbabe · 03/12/2009 13:06

pizza or fish and chips.

something you don't need to cook, as you'll be rushed off your arse the next day.

Vivia · 03/12/2009 13:07

Christmas Eve is order-in Chinese food plus Home Alone 1 and 2. Oh yes.

WreckOfTheHesperus · 03/12/2009 13:14

How about a cheese fondu? Very sociable and low on effort.

PeachyDrapedInSparklyTinsel · 03/12/2009 14:05

There'sa recipe for Christmas Eve Lasagne on the GHI website if you look, I would bet that's nice

We've got an ASD 6 year old who wants pasta every day; as a concession that will get him to agree to eat with us on the day, we are ordering Christmas tree shaped pasta for the Eve.

MistletoeMonster · 03/12/2009 14:14

beuf bourgignon in slow cooker, jacket pots on just before we go to church, come home & voila! All DH has to do is rustle up some mulled wine (we do that in another slow cooker!)

mrstimlovejoy · 03/12/2009 14:41

homemade curry and rice,samosas,naan bread
usually have a takeaway but thought i'd make an effort this year

Starbear · 03/12/2009 15:03

MistletoeMonster Like beef Bourgignon. I can make loads and if anyone pops over I can feed them too. Not light though. I'm going towards fish I think.

MistletoeMonster · 03/12/2009 15:55

What about seafood spaghetti then? Avec garlic bread possibly?

Dorothyredboots · 03/12/2009 16:03

I'll be down the chippie on my own as DH goes out for lunch from work and won't want a meal!

pigleychez · 03/12/2009 17:04

We have a tradion here... Chinese on Christmas eve!

Saves cooking as there will plenty of that the next day!

Squishabelle · 03/12/2009 17:06

Pigley - very sensible! Its always Indian take-away for us.

Ivykaty44 · 03/12/2009 17:17
