After watching Delia the other night and having a Polish Christmas Eve tow years ago which was 7 courses!!!!!! I would like a light but festive Christmas Eve dinner. Not to heavy as it puts me right off as we are going for the full works on Christmas day. Anything that doesn't require to much work or a lot of freezing as we only have a small freezer. All tips will be gratefully received

We have the ham because my cooker is too small to cook turkey and ham on Christmas day. I am going to try the cumberland sauce from Delia's programme the other night. Then maybe potato bake which can be prepared the day before and jsut popped in the oven. Some light greens to go with it.
Then we will be having the christmas pudding and lots of lovely cheese/wine.

teddymummy Sounds yummy. Was the cumberland sauce the very runny one?

We are going to my in-laws and she does Christmas dinner on Christmas eve. That way my MIL doesn't have to cook on Christmas day and can enjoy spending time with the family - and especially her grandchildren.

On Christmas day it will be a cooked breakfast and then bits and pieces put out during the day - so a bit of a graze really.

salmon en croute?

Rudolf pie (shepherds pie with minced venison)was yum but grossed out visiting teenage girls (wimps)

This year it'll be curry night - 7 adults and 9 kids between 8 and 18. One lamb, one aubergine and chickpea, rice and pickles etc.

Home made pizza. Make the dough in advance - heck you can even freeze the stuff if you make a big batch and then split it into separate bags.

Then make up some thick tomato sauce (you can buy this is you like) and get everyone to top their own.

Home made tastes better and it's fun.

Serve with salad and red wine. Yummy!

We're having roast butternut squash halves, with the hollows filled with leeks, bacon and either blue cheese or gruyere, and served with steamed shredded savoy cabbage. Wanted something with not much meat because of the vast quantity of beef I intend to eat the following day.

Now your talking thereistheball That sounds yummy and very different. I was going along the lines of Pumpkin Stew then Blinis with the smoked salmon etc. I agree with not eating too much meat over the holidays.
thank you we might go for this during the week as a test.
