McDreamy · 01/12/2009 19:24

never been but what a fab present - I heart your DH Hope you have a wonderful time!

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 19:32

Thank you. He is not prone to great romantic gestures so has totally befuddled me. He only told me because I was just about to book a Sainsbo's delivery on the day that we will be flying!

Oh that's so nice! I loved Prague, I went for 4 days a few summers ago and my parents are just back from a weekend. My mum said it was freeeezing but it was a great excuse to wear big hats and gloves and stomp around feeling very Russian...! I would say there's no real 'must do's', it's a great place to just be. We went on a walking tour which was great - but it might be weather dependent! I loved it for just being relaxed and very chilled out, lots of drinking in nice cafes and restaurants, wandering over the bridges, admiring the old squares etc.

Hope you have a lovely time!

Francasaysrelax · 01/12/2009 19:37

Oh you lucky thing!
It's going to be very cold.

ElizabethWakefield · 01/12/2009 19:42

I loved Prague, we went in November and it was very cold (sleety snow most days) but it was nice to get wrapped up!

The christmas market will all be set up, I got some lovely hand made decorations. We also went on a tour that included a bit or walking, a tour of the castle and a boat down the river (covered with hot drinks provided) which was good for giving a feel of the place.

We also went to the communist museum which was interesting and the sex museum which was disappointing

Have a great time

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 19:46

Lovely - thank you. We'll have the dds with us, so sadly may have to give the sex museum a miss!

It is the most amazing place, we went for honeymoon 7 years ago in November and it was -4 degrees so take warm clothes. Take good shoes, plenty of walking to be done, the astronomical clock in the main square is worth seeing as is Charles bridge

If you have time just wonder around the shops. Thousands of wooden puppets and wooden kids toys and at this time of year lovely Christmas decorations.

Have a fab time!

MistergodthisisSal · 01/12/2009 20:01

We went two Christmases ago, and it was beautiful! Your dh sound lovely and thoughtful.

Prague: Freezing cold, but take a very warm coat and comfortable shoes, and you'll have an amazing time strolling around.

A warning - we went to a performance in one of the churches one evening, and there was no heating inside. We walked there, so had our duvets outdoor clothes, which meant we could sit on our scarves and hats whilst keeping our coats on. I would definitely recommend going to any if possible, but take some bum insulator -thing soft.

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 20:58

Thank you. Oh it sounds lovely. Have plenty of bum insulation!

Have a lovely time. We went 9 years ago and to be honest I cant remember anything specific - it was all lovely. We used the Rough Guide to plan our days. You will need hats and I recommend wearing tights under trousers/jeans (something I'd never done before and never done since. Had to go to C&A in Wenceslas (sp?)Square to buy some!) Only bad experience was some women dipping my mini rucksack, so I recomment across the body bag. Have a super time x

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 21:45

Tights under trousers - have been known to do that even in England!

Adds to shopping list:
Hat
Gloves
Comfortable shoes - recs?
Waterproof shoes for the dds, who have only ridiculously unsuitable footwear.

I've been to Prague - but only for a passing through lunch. It's a lovely place.

What a great DP you have

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 21:54

And what a great name YOU have.

stainesmassif · 01/12/2009 21:59

Bookmarking- on itouch at mo, dh proposed in amazing restaurant, 1 room at top of a tower - will link tomorrow

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 22:03

Wow - sounds lovely - but expensive! And we will have the dds with us. Am in a bit of a panic about a) how on earth I will get the Christmas shopping done before we go b) the girls and I are all veggie, so will we have to live on pizza and sugar dumplings? c) how much money am I going to have to spend on warm things before we go?

OP posts:
stainesmassif · 01/12/2009 22:07

Not expensive and gorgeous view of the city - definitely a highlight .

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 22:11

Sounds great. I look forward to the link tomorrow!

heheh... when I was in Prague I was vegetarian... they gave me cucumber in vinegar... and thats it.

Even the potatoes had pork in them...

That was just after collapse of communism, so things may have changed a little

It will be very very cold...

The astronomical clock is actually the register office- my friends married there.

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 22:25

Ahhhhhhhhhhh - am hoping there are at least some pizzas and perhaps a bit of salad to eat!

It's going to be flipping freezing isn't it? Need to find a hat for this stupidly small head of mine.

OP posts:
MistergodthisisSal · 01/12/2009 23:28

It'll be fantastic, just be prepared!

But yes - hat, gloves, scarf are all requirements. Pack extra pairs of tights - I find that a great layer that doesn't add bulk and takes up no packing space (tip: never, ever, ever go to China in the winter - only place where even that didn't work!)

Re: Food - I'm not vegetarian, but seem to remember options available on menus. Just did a quick search, and it doesn't look all bad: restaurants

llareggub · 01/12/2009 23:43

We went in January a few years ago and it was indeed freezing.

Take comfortable shoes; we walked miles everyday.

You definitely should go to the castle. The tickets are great value and you must see the changing of the guards. The castle is open by night too, and worth going back for. You'll need a least a day at the castle to really do it justice.

We just wandered around. The Jewish Quarter was worth a look, as was the Communist Museum. We loved wandering around the old town but didn't think much of Wencelas Square.

Lauriefairyonthetreeeatscake · 02/12/2009 10:25

We went for our honeymoon in December 5 years ago and had the most wonderful time. The Castle area where we stayed was lovely. DH is veggie and there was plenty of great things for him to eat, an amazing cabbage/potato/cheese dish that he still goes all misty over.

Next to the castle is a cafe that has an outdoor terrace where you eat apple strudel and mulled wine looking over the whole of Prague (there are patio heaters and fur blankets do you don't get cold).

The food on the stalls at the Christmas market is really good and you can fill up with chips and mayonnaise and cinnamon buns (and really good Czech beer).

Even though its cold it was proper cold rather than that clammy, wet cold so it was easy to keep warm walking around.

have a wonderful time
