It is a trip to Prague! Please does anybody have any must sees/must dos? And how bloomin' cold will it be?

Fantastic! We went to Prague in December a couple of years ago. It was great. It wasn't actually quite as cold as I thought it would be

lissielouskissingsantaclaus · 02/12/2009 10:41

wow, you lucky bugger! i love prague, we went for valentines about 6y ago and it was lovely.

we visited the mala strana to see the infant of Prague. not religious, but i swear that was the only time in my life that I felt in the presence of something higher! its the most amazing building, the city itself is gorgeous, the clock in the main square is gorgeous. and loved sitting outside the cafes eating strawbebby dumplings and drinking mulled cider...

can i come too?

lucysmum · 02/12/2009 10:44

Lived in prague for a year but a long while ago so don't know details these days. It is fab ! Could be very cold so take lots of layers and sturdy boots/shoes - can be slippery if they don't clear the ice/snow. It is best seen at night when most of crowds are not around imo so you will need to be warm for late night walks in quiet lanes. . The no 11 tram is fab for taking you all over the city and up to the castle. Undeground is safe, clean and warm ! Old Town Sq and around Charles Bridge/up to castle are most touristy so can be very busy. Operas etc even just to look at architechture. Seem to remember old jewish cemetery which was very atmostpheric. Also some lovely cafes, little parks on Kampa Island. Beer is fab and used to be very cheap (I was there pre children...)

JaneiteMightBite · 02/12/2009 18:41

Thank you all so much. I can't wait! Have started a Word document to paste all your fab suggestions into.

I'm liking the idea of streudel and mulled wine by the castle very much! And cinammon buns....and strawberry dumplings....and Christmas decorations...and the Jewish cemetery.

The hotel is near Wenceslas Square but we don't intend to spend much time in it!

how long are you going for? if you have time, a trip out of prague to Cesky Krumlov is well worth it! ditto Kutna hora. I lived in Ceske budejovice a few years ago and spent a lot of time travelling around the country!

good veggie food is difficult in the CR, but I loved smazeny syr - deep fried cheese. desperately unhealthy, but great with tatarske sauce mulled wine, roasted almonds, fruit dumplings - all yum! christmas bread there is called vanocka and is gorgeous (must remember to get /fil to bring some over!). christmas sweeties also yum!

wenceslas sq is a tourist trap btw - i loved it as it felt so busy after ceske bud, but it's very westernised compared to other parts of the city.

metro is great for getting around - cheap and easily navigable.

watch out for pickpockets around karluv most (charles bridge); it's full of them, sadly.

behind the castle, within the castle complex though, there's the golden street (I think?), lots of cute wee houses - great fun!

communist museum (just off thr bottom of wenceslas sq above a macdonald and casino iirc!) is excellent, best museum i saw in the whole CR!

december is not necessarily freezing cold, but is often wet, always raining when we're visiting at christmas!

sorry for poor typing, my (1/2 czech) DS is sleeping on me at the mo

mankymummymoo · 02/12/2009 19:17

if its still there - La Reduka (sp?) jazz club. honestly, its amazing, like stepping back into the 20s.

Jewish cemetary is very thought provoking.

JaneiteMightBite · 02/12/2009 19:29

DDs are 12 and 14. Do you think the Communist museum would be okay for them? They are pretty tolerant at trolling around museums providing there is the promise of cake later. I take it we won't be able to go to the jazz club avec dds?

I think we will have to live on pudding for four days! DD1 doesn't do cheese either.

llareggub · 02/12/2009 19:35

The museum will be fine for their age; it isn't huge anyway.

lucysmum · 02/12/2009 19:36

Even 15 yrs ago you could get half decent pizza and pasta so I wouldn't worry too much about food. That jazz club was so good when I was there. Also a nightclub called Radost I think and another open air one by the river (reminiscing now !)

stainesmassif · 02/12/2009 20:09

here's the menu, a couple of veggie options, but you're not exactly spoilt for choice.

however, it's so worth it for the view and the experience. obviously, i'm biased, but would recommend it to anyone. how often do you get a whole restaurant to yourself?? unfortunately the photos don't really do it justice. the building is beautiful, but the views are specatacular! have a fab time.

JaneiteMightBite · 02/12/2009 21:14

It looks beautiful.

Bump for any more ideas.

Also - dp says we need Euros but I have had a little google and it seems to say Czech crowns - is he right or wrong please?

OP posts:
skinsl · 04/12/2009 09:04

I would love to go back, it will be magical before xmas
We went in Jan, it was freezing but just wrap up warm. lots of layers rather than big coats.there are mulled wine places everywhere.

we did a ghost walk, which wasn't that scary but very entertaining.. depending on how old the kids are.

arolf · 04/12/2009 11:52

crowns, not euro! slovakia is in the eurozone, the czechs are being very like the brits, and procrastinating wildly!

JaneiteMightBite · 04/12/2009 16:14

Thank you.

I went a few decembers ago and it was baltic!!!! Layers and layers and layers.

I would recommend (does that have 2 c's?) the full day tour starting at the clock in the old square.

Some walking bits, some tram bits, some boat bits and lunch in between (ok food but bring snacks).

Out tour guide was brilliant, so funny, so liberal.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 04/12/2009 20:59

Wow! Have a wonderful time.

Northernlurker · 04/12/2009 21:08

I went in 1991 I think it was and it is a great place. One word of 'warning' I guess - there was a small museum by the jewish cemetrary that was full of pictures drawn by jewish kids in the concentration camps, All bar one or two had a date of birth and a date of death underneath them because when the children got to age 1o-12 they were killed. I have never forgotten that place, seeing my teachers with tears in their eyes, looking and looking for one damn picture of a house or a tree or a family that didn't have a date of death under it! Now seeing these things is a good thing and I don't regret it but equally I know I wouldn't want to take my dds (11 and 8) in to that place just yet - so if it still there and I expect it is I thought I'd just 'warn' you. The art gallerys are amazing though!

JaneiteMightBite · 04/12/2009 21:45

Thank you all. Especially for the 'warning' Northern Lurker. My dds are a bit older and I think would be okay.

There's so much I want to do now but how much, realistically, do you think we'll be able to get done in just a couple of days?

OP posts:
JaneiteMightBite · 05/12/2009 15:18

Okay - have bought hats, gloves, scarves, thermal socks! And new boots for dd1's giant (size 8!) feet.

What else do I need to do/know?

OP posts:
Dumbledoresgirl · 05/12/2009 15:24

Wow Janeite, you lucky thing.

I have never been to Prague and have no advice at all, but just wanted to let you know how I am and to wish you a happy trip. When are you going?

JaneiteMightBite · 05/12/2009 16:04

Thankyou! Just before Christmas, as soon as school breaks up.
