Have been asked to suggest a present for someone to get my DS1 with a budget of £150

Have suggested this

He's 4 in March and mad on dinosaurs, but it's alot of money on one thing, wondering if anyone already has one, is it any good?

This one looks really good but I think he's too young?

Or this one, but it looks massive!

why not suggest some little things and vouchers to go to the science or natural history museum? £150 sounds like a lot to spend on a present..

ChickandDuck · 22/11/2009 10:22

He has got lots of little things coming from us and both sets of grandparents so think it would be too much to have more little bits.

Mind you could suggest more playmobil/lego...

Would they get him a smaller present and put the balance in a savings account for him? I'd worry a little about the responsibility for a 4 year old looking after such an expensive toy, but then you know your ds - I'd have broken it within the week at that age!

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 22/11/2009 10:26

Who is it from tbh I wouldn't want someone buying a big present for my child at that cost. Can they not put £100 into premium bonds and spend the £50 on some playmobil (although I still think £50 is a large ammount from someone who isn't a parent)

OrmIrian · 22/11/2009 10:28

Wow! Far too much IMO for a present from a non-parent. Suggest a smaller gift and perhaps 10 to spend himself, and the rest in a savings account. I know it sounds boring but it will be much more useful when he's older, their tastes get more expensive ....beleive me

Lauriefairyonthetreeeatscake · 22/11/2009 10:33

I'd get the Argos one if I were you as it looks sturdy cos you can climb all over it - the first one looks like it would break with a strong wind.

The John Lewis one looks fantastic but it is too young for him - perhaps in a couple of years you could persuade this nice rellie to buy that one too

MrsJohnDeere · 22/11/2009 10:36

I would buy something for about £40-£50 max (Playmobil? Season ticket to the zoo?) and put the rest in a savings account or Premium Bonds until he's old enough to want/need/appreciate something that does cost a lot more.

ChickandDuck · 22/11/2009 10:50

It's from his biological father. He wants to spend it on presents, he got him nothing last year so I think he wants to make ammends, he will be reluctant to put it in savings/season ticket (as I would prefer) as this won't have the same effect on DS

My DDs dad is the same. They want the glory.

At this stage, I just suggest something I wouldn't dream of buying, but that DD wants.

This year it's a netbook.

Curiousmama · 22/11/2009 10:54

Pleo is fun and cute, my friend's dd has one I think she still plays with it and got it last Christmas. She's 12 though. He may play with it for longer? I thought it was too much to spend on such a toy but she did play with it more than I expected.

Curiousmama · 22/11/2009 10:55

pleo

ChickandDuck · 22/11/2009 11:05

It does say from 8yo though Curiosmama... but I wonder if I'd he'd get more enjoyment out of it than the others, even if he doesn't 'play' with it properly?

His orginal idea was a TV/DVD player for his room, which I kindly declined.

You'd need lots of space for those dinos. They do look great though. Would prefer the first or third one for your ds' age, I think.

Is he into trains? How about Brio? It's very expensive but lasts for years (we have stuff that is more than 30 years old and still going strong).

Playmobil also good. You could get a couple of large sets and also lasts for years.

Love the idea of a season ticket to the zoo.

saggyhairyarse · 22/11/2009 11:14

What about a wii?

DaftApeth · 22/11/2009 11:16

Pleo looks too delicate (with all the electronics) for a 3 year old. I would have thought he needs something more robust that can be knocked around more.

ChickandDuck · 22/11/2009 11:18

Tis another worry DaftApeth... our house isn't exactly huge!

He used to be into trains, not so much now though. Have got some Brio for DS2 actually.

Saggyhairyarse - would be fab, but I doubt he'll go for that!

Lauriefairyonthetreeeatscake · 22/11/2009 11:20

I have just lost 5 minutes of my life watching that link to Pleo that curiousmama posted - looks really quite boring, it sort of shook its legs a little, wiggled a bit very slowly then went back to sleep.

If I wouldnt be hugely entertained by it then I doubt a 3 year old would be.

bronze · 22/11/2009 11:20

how about a climbing frame or something like that

Curiousmama · 22/11/2009 11:39

I got ds2 a castle from ELC a few years back and with all the figures you could spend nearly £150. He's 9 and still uses it although tends to be doctor who inspired games now

this one is on offer

Curiousmama · 22/11/2009 11:40

Sorry Laurie it is much more fun in real life although my dss didn't ask for one after seeing it.

ChickandDuck · 22/11/2009 11:42

I have just done a gift list on Toys R Us that includes Playmobil and Lego sets, comes to way more than £200 but he can pick and choose which bits then so at least he has some input!

OP posts:
Curiousmama · 22/11/2009 11:42

ds2 had this and enjoyed it...think it's still around somewhere? Only £40 though and takes up a fair bit of room.
