Anyone else really, really hate New Year's Eve? Come and join me and feel miserable.

I feel as if I am an alien. I don't like New Year's Eve at all and DH thinks I am miserable. The only other person I know who hates New Year's Eve is my mum! Everyone else seems to really like it. I don't get it. I've never liked it. I hate the feeling of 'you must enjoy' about it and the 'oooh a new year hooray' stuff and I always feel crap on New Year's Day due to too much drink and lack of sleep. We are having some friends over tonight, which is nice but I'd just rather go to bed by myself at 9pm with a good book and a hot chocolate than get dressed up, eat nice food, drink champagne and stay up until 2am being jolly. Does anyone else feel like me? Or am I really just a miserable old cow!

I am not a fan of going out for NYE either. Me and DH appear to have a NYE curse, where every trip out on this fateful night ends in disaster.

Once we paid £30 each for a ticket to a club, and before we could even hand our coats in, someone punched DH (mistaking him for someone else, we think) and we got thrown out. So we effectively paid £60 to walk from the front entrance of the club to the back one.

Another year, we had gathered in the city centre with some friends to watch the fireworks at midnight, only for DH to get caught up in a fight. As the clock struck 12 he was being bundled into a riot van. The heel of my boot then promptly fell off and I spent the rest of the night limping round the streets looking for him.

Suffice to say, we will be staying in tonight. And I should add that I have made my poor DH sound like a thug - he is not at all!

cocolepew · 31/12/2008 12:27

I knew that really, unavalibility.

BeckyBendyLegs · 31/12/2008 12:36

Oh dear cwitchy your poor DH!

I don't like it - never have. Fortunately dh feels the same. Just another day.

I will go to bed early, as I always do, and enjoy going out for a long walk tomorrow morning without feeling like death warmed up.

wangle99 · 31/12/2008 14:57

I am another one who hates it, I find the whole 'new year' thing pretty depressing. Would love to go to bed early but feel compelled to stay up and watch neighbours drunkenly singing in the lane outside at midnight whilst twatty nearby neighbours sets fireworks off up the lane (perhaps aiming at badly singing neighbours??) perhaps this year I'll go join them lol

BeckyBendyLegs · 31/12/2008 15:37

DH is currently filling the house with smells of fish and seaweed (he is cooking Japanese food for us all). I am sort of getting in the mood. He does love entertaining so much! Our first guests are due in about five mins. I'm typing up the menus since I know the lingo better than DH. But still...would rather go to bed and have a hot chocolate! Does that make me such a bad person?

Another miserable cow here! I hate New Year's Eve, always have done. I don't see the point - it never feels like a 'special day' and depresses me, for some reason. I hardly ever have an invitation for the evening (not surprising, eh? ) but really, I don't care. Sometimes we stay up for Hootenany but this year, since DS's sleep is unpredictable at the mo, we'll be in bed by 11. Hope the neighbour's fireworks don't wake him up...

I love Christmas and am not usually a killjoy, just hate New Year!

trace2 · 31/12/2008 15:58

hate it its no diffrent to any other night on the bloody fire works at midnight

BeckyBendyLegs · 31/12/2008 15:58

Me too. I totally love Christmas and annoy everyone with my over-the-top Christmas spirit! I still get that funny feeling in my stomach when I open presents which I'm told is unusual for anyone over the age of 12. But New Year? Pointless!

I don't like it either - the pressure to have the best night out of the whole year always spoiled new year (when I used to go out).

When I met my DH he had a tradition of going out on new years day to celebrate the new year. I happily joined in with this and IMO it is much better. No hangover on new years day and no pressure to have a fantastic time.

BeckyBendyLegs · 31/12/2008 16:02

I've got to turn the laptop off now as our guests are due any minute and they might not like me going on MN while they are here... Happy Humbug New Year to you all! Thanks for entertaining me today with your tales of crap New Years Eves! I actually feel a bit more cheerful about New Years Eve than I normally do. BBL.

aGalChangedHerName - a hoolie is a wild, wild party with a huge bonfire, drink, dancing and heavens knows what else.
We are out in the wilds anyway so think of hillbilly sons on moonshine with heat and music.

CharleeinChains · 31/12/2008 16:23

I don't enjoy NYE i don't celebrate it either, i would rather celebrate New Years DAY an that is usually just a nice meal round the table and a chat about the year ahead.

All i see is people using it as an excuse to get wasted and behave like idiots and scream at ridiclous times at night................. but i know im old and miserable before my time.

We are just going to get a Pizza in and watch a film then go to bed whatever the time is, sod midnight.

Round here is you want to go to a pub on NYE you have to pay at least £8 to get in and the drinks are all more expensive. Fucking rip off.

aGalChangedHerName · 31/12/2008 16:26

NOA now if someone invited me to a hoolie then that would be different lol!!

A proper shindig would be worth staying up for.

Are you in Scotland btw? Only asking as i am.

GentleOtter · 31/12/2008 17:55

Yes we are up in the Perthshire hills at the back of beyond

Mimia · 31/12/2008 18:19

I'll be with you Zoggs, also emptying bedpans tonight! I'm not a great fan of New Year to be honest, I just think its all alot of hype.

hunnybun1981 · 31/12/2008 21:53

will always hate it my grandmother went into hospital with a chest infection and we got a call on nyd to say she had passed away with a clot that travelled to her lung, which could have possibly been prevented if they had of tried to get her out of bed and she was only 62.

so a very sad time of year still

but happy news year to everyone else

chinese and a glass or 2 of wine

barbarianoftheuniverse · 31/12/2008 22:22

I hate it. It is stone cold sober because you are going to have to pick up teenagers total stress night.

And it is -5 out there and I have just driven through town and the girls are wearing NOTHING.

If I was rich I would hand out vests.

lou33 · 31/12/2008 22:36

i cant remember the last time i went out on nye, the enforced conviviality, combined with paying to get into places that are usually free, higher priced taxis and drinks, finished off with watching a bunch of drunken nobbers starting a ruck over something inconsequential, is not something that appeals really

IllegallyBrunette · 31/12/2008 22:43

I last went out for new year in 2000

Dd2 was 2 weeks old and just out of scbu.

Don't worry I didn't take her on a pub crawl, it was a family party.

blossomsmine · 31/12/2008 23:03

I used to like NYE when i was younger, my dh hate NYE and always has. I am not sure whether his feelings about it have rubbed off on me or i have just changed as i have got older.
I cannot stand all the 'what are you doing nye questions' that drives me mad, however much you say you don't want to go anywhere i always feel like a sad cow who hasn't actually got anywhere to go!!! Although we have, cos there is quite alot going on round here nye..........too much in my opinion
I go to bed whatever the time, can't see the point of staying up and saying to dh who has probably fallen asleep on the sofa 'happy new year'....

BettySwollux · 31/12/2008 23:18

Bloody pointless. Hate being told when I should have fun. Am knackered, but cant go to bed as we have to see NY in as family (darent get DS2 up, sleepis so erratic at atm).
What I really hate is when the bells come in (if your out) and everyone hugs and kisses you, i ust think, WTF, you crossed the road to avoid me last week!!
Sooo hypocritical.
Just got a text that made me smile though,
To all those who wished me luck in 2008, it did fuck all. If you want to send me something, please send alcohol, money or vouchers (not woolworths).
Happy 2009.

bethoo · 31/12/2008 23:25

i am going to hate it if my bf does not come home

whomovedmychocolate · 31/12/2008 23:29

I just can't be arsed to be frank. It's too soon after christmas for yet more enforced jollity.

Mind you, you can use it to distract people while you whip down the christmas tree and have a quick hoover

lou33 · 01/01/2009 00:13

i just dashed to get a friend in need and dragged him back to mine with 15 mins to spare before it turned 12

now i can finally have a drink!
