geisha · 19/12/2008 22:28

I have 50 people to buy for, with a donation of £100 from the boss and I could probably contribute another £25 so about £2.40 per head! Can't do gambling or alcohol so those out of the question! Would be grateful for any suggestions, there are women and men to buy for! Thanks!

Arrange a meal out for the new year for all concerned and contribute the money towards the food bill. It's meant to be a group thing really so splitting to buy individual pressies for that amount isn't as nice as sharing something together, if meal out isn't possible put it towards cakes biscuits and non alcoholic drinks to share during breaks in the new year.

These re hospital consultants.

Who earn £100k upwards?

geisha · 19/12/2008 22:58

I need to work with what I've got..... and lots of advice from mnet!

It doesn't matter how much they earn, it's a nice gesture to give some money for the department ,nursing staff to enjoy oneway or another, to say an amount it's not enough is ungrateful so don't know why you are angry jingle . They aren't bosses exactly just higher up the ladder and they make the patient care final decision. It's not the same as a company director who is a boss. I think use it cleverly there will be alot of reduced stuff around now, lottery tickest could be good but isn't that gambling?

MissisBoot · 19/12/2008 23:02

Flowers? You could go to a flower wholesaler and get loads of stuff for £100?

geisha · 19/12/2008 23:05

Lottery tickets are gambling, I just didn't want to gamble in case they disapproved and I need to get it sorted on my days off this weekend so don't have time to check with them. What does everyone think.... is a couple of lottery tickets each ok? If a few staff win a tenner then we'll have done well?!

Scratch cards?

samsonara · 19/12/2008 23:07

How about getting a whole range of presents( 25 of them) some really cheaplike a bag of maltesers and some a few quid more and making a lucky dip, and they can all have dip and get a random present? That way no one will be offended if it is a cheap bar of chocolate and it will be fun too!

MissisBoot · 19/12/2008 23:09

Ooh - yes a lucky dip is a brilliant idea - go for that then you won't have the stress of thinking for things for individuals - you can also bung a few funny things as well - get yourself down to woolies tomorrow!

samsonara · 19/12/2008 23:10

I wouldn't get the lottery tickets, get chocolates if you are really stuck, even something like a small ferro rocher box or mini celebrations box, they are less than a quid, would be nice.

wrinklytum · 19/12/2008 23:10

Haven't read thread but has anyone suggested a diary/calendar.

Useful to write down shift patterns and AL on

Actually I think it is quite nice of the consultants to do this.Ours normally contribute a few bottles of vino to the Christmas do.

geisha · 19/12/2008 23:12

the only other thing is whether to use it to fill the staff fridge with nice M&s nibbles type food for xmas day and boxing day?

OP posts:
samsonara · 19/12/2008 23:13

For the lucky dip you can get it all from the supermarket or one of those pound type shops too, if you don't want to get caught in the huge Woolies queues. Wrap everything in tissue paper and pop into a big black bin liner or sack of some kind !

samsonara · 19/12/2008 23:15

The problem with filing the stuff for xmas and boxing day is that not everyone who should get to enjoy it does, they may be off for example,

geisha · 19/12/2008 23:16

thats true samsonara....
lucky dip is a good idea, just don't know if have enough time to organise!

OP posts:
samsonara · 19/12/2008 23:22

what's the shop , supermarket options near you?

geisha · 19/12/2008 23:24

waitrose or tesco

goingfor3 · 19/12/2008 23:24

I would fill the fridge with nibbles on christmas day and new years day as most nursing staff usually work one or the other.

baublerock · 19/12/2008 23:32

I posted about this site on another thread, but you can get loads of stocking filler type things Here - I love the colour changing Eggs, but there's lots of other things too - you can get 14 eggs for £21 if you use voucher code newsletter20 at the checkout.

jollyoldstnickschick · 19/12/2008 23:35

brainwave

buy a book of raffle tickets everyone gets a strip ......choose 5 'tidy' prizes and 5 cheap prizes- luck of the draw!!!

SueW · 19/12/2008 23:37

I've just done 33 presents for sixth form girls and did it in one trip to Primark and the pound shop. Jewellery and money boxes ("Girls' Night Out" "Holiday Fund", etc) budget £1 per student.

Pound shops can have some useful and surprisingly good stuff - one locally had lots of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn stuff - little tins and mugs iirc.

Joke things like this went down well in our staff Secret Santa.

Tesco had reduced glass bud vases this week at just 75p each

TK Maxx had some lovely glassware (vases, glass boxes) for £1.99.

If you do lucky dip, you can throw in some lottery tickets too.

As for wrapping - 12yo DD kindly wrapped my 33 presents!

geisha · 19/12/2008 23:43

TK maxx is a good idea

I'm not sure what is in Waitrose but know they do have lovely chocolates and biscuits and Tesco have their finest belgian chocolates 200g, half price £2.44 and Elizabeth Shaw mint crisp choclates are buy one get one free £2.93. It might be a case of popping in and getting stuff like that and then some cheap booby prize dips like a bar of soap, a packet of tissues a biro!. Don't worry about it too much, do what you can, pop in to the shop and see what's possible I'm sure everyone will appreciate your efforts.

lilolilbethlehem · 19/12/2008 23:47

Go to Lidls or Aldi; buy a Stollen (about £2 vs £5 - £6 on the high street but I swear at least as good)

Invest any remaining money in how you wrap it. My suggestion is paper overwrapped with cellophane then ribbon. Adds £s to the original value!

lilolilbethlehem · 19/12/2008 23:48

not just "a" Stollen, one per person, obviously
