Ive got a 100 string of white ones, plu loads of litle red led ornaments, it looks great. We too have the many settings thing. The DC love 'bonkers' I prefer still.

SnowMuchToBits · 18/12/2008 22:43

Do you mean me?

If so, yes, they are green, blue, red, yellow, orange and white. I have two sets of 12. One set has some bell-shaped covers which go over six of the lights. They are very "nostalgia"!!

SnowMuchToBits · 18/12/2008 22:44

Mine are so old they have never heard of flashing!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/12/2008 22:46

Snow: your post has reminded me how much I hanker after some proper old fashioned "fairy lights" as they used to be called when I was a kid (well, they were on our box). Proper fairy-esque pastel colours and everything.

None of your crappy ice-blue, cold-looking, LED lights.

Where can I get some proper old-fashioned 60s and 70s style ones, does anyone know?

NotanOtter · 18/12/2008 22:47

gosh i must be going senile Somuchtobits!!! what did i say that for? (worrying)

OP posts:
NotanOtter · 18/12/2008 22:49

no i dont but Curly you are right

somuchtobits i am Jaloux of those

AGREE RE THOSE ICE BLUE HIDEOSITIES

and yes that was meant to be in caps!! the look so cold and to be frank spooky there is NOTHING festive about them!

We have a string of 250 lights which usually do a 6-8ft tree. However due to toddler and furniture rearranging this year we have a 3ft bald stump and the remaining 240 lights are strung around the ceiling

NAO - I'm with Bella - make it a strong one!

NotanOtter · 18/12/2008 22:51

does the 'stump' look pretty it being bald n all!

OP posts:
tassisssss · 18/12/2008 22:51

well i put my neck on the line to get 3 strands not 2 on the church tree which is 6-7 foot. Each strand was 150 lights.

Definately needed 3.

NotanOtter · 18/12/2008 22:52

oooh thankyou Tassis - you sound certain!

OP posts:
IAteTheWholeSelectionBox · 18/12/2008 22:53

Well it's got so much tinsel on it you can't tell it's bald. It's definitely still stumpy though. It's tasteful and traditional though, honest. In the sense that in our family it's traditional to have shit trees!

SnowMuchToBits · 18/12/2008 22:54

Lolol! Snowbaby made me feel really young (I'm 47!)

My lights are (ahem) 1950s vintage although with bulbs which have been replaced over the years. I was very lucky to be passed these by my parents when they decided they no longer wanted them.

I also have a set of what were called "nostalgia lights", quite similar, but more modern flexes, and slightly differently shaped bulbs, made by Noma, which I bought in the 1990s. I don't think they make them any more, but I have stockpiled a load of spare bulbs!

tassisssss · 18/12/2008 22:59

oh I am most certain

the trick to persuading the lovely tree decorating ladies at church that 3 strands was sufficient was to purchase 4 and say "I've got 4 here, but I expect 3 will be enough!". They'd have settled for 1 or 2 at the most. It really does look better with 3.

For the first 4 years of marriage I bought a set a year in the Jan sales!

I agree they have to be plain.

NotanOtter · 19/12/2008 21:55

somuchtobits(baby!)

how does that feel?

WELL..... the tree has ended up bigger than anticipated at around 6 foot

at the lst count there were 490 lights and it looks good!! I could STILL have put more ( as i am terribly anally retentive)

but i am pleased and am soon to ad pics!

CoolYourJets · 19/12/2008 22:12

erm once had a 10 footer with 1000 lights on - all the light sup and down the branches no string in between. Best tree ever.

NotanOtter · 19/12/2008 23:42

wow sounds fantabulous!

popped two pics on profile but not great ...looks better in rl (honest!)

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 19/12/2008 23:54

ultimate faux-pas but I have only read the OP.

We have a 6ft - 7ft tree (6ft 6" ceilings so it has to be trimmed) and 800-1000 lights (all white) - so the OP number sounds about right.

NotanOtter · 19/12/2008 23:57

stealth - i am an 'only op reader' quite often so fear not you are amongst friends

yours sounds fab!

callmeovercautious · 19/12/2008 23:59

I have a 1m tree - don't do feet I am afraid. I has 20 lights. I am off to Woolies in the morning for another 200.

NotanOtter · 20/12/2008 00:00

ours has sold out callme!

OP posts:
Tinker · 20/12/2008 00:02

God, I've got light envy now. We've got a 7'/8' foot tree and 100 (I think) lights. Are my neighbours laughing at me?

stealthsquiggle · 20/12/2008 00:47

NotanOtter - aforementioned tree and lights have yet to be united IYSWIM, but we normally have somewhere between 800 and 1000 lights, depending how many I get working before I get bored. The tree is in and is approximately vertical, so decorating it is tomorrow's job.

nannyL · 20/12/2008 10:41

5ft fake tree and 50 lights = fine

also have 50 lights on a 3.5 foot real tree and that seems perfect as well!

emkana · 20/12/2008 10:48

I'm going to add this to my list of things that Nobody in Real LIfe does, Only On MN

100 lights per foot of tree? Are you insane? How can you fit any decorations on?

ohreindeerwhatamessysleigh · 20/12/2008 13:50

6ft tree with 200 lights here. Looks just right imo.
