...and if so how much? And if you have more than one usual postman, what do you do?

no

squeaver · 15/12/2008 21:11

What the series of random blokes who occasionally deliver something to us and not one of our neighbours, along with the mail for our house number in all the surrounding streets usually at 4pm? Of course I do.

squeaver · 15/12/2008 21:13

Actually my mother is the only person I know who tips the postman. But tipping is her hobby. And she has a lunatic dog.

ilikeyoursleeves · 15/12/2008 21:13

hmmmm not sure what to do. Our postie is fab, really friendly and goes to lengths to hide packages in safe places if we're not in. Always has a wave and a smile for DS.

£20 but he is a lovely helpful man who even signs for stuff for me or goes out of his way to deliver something on his way home if I was out in the morning.

LynetteScavo · 15/12/2008 21:14

No.

Nor the dust men.

TheVirginGoober · 15/12/2008 21:15

No.

cheerytinselcherry · 15/12/2008 21:15

Yep, a nice bottle of wine. He is great.
Tins of beer for the dustbin men too.

I think I will this year - we have a regular who is lovely. DH uncle is a postie and gets quite a bit in tips each year.

basementbear · 15/12/2008 21:18

Definitely not! The amount of post that goes through our neighbours' door by mistake is just a joke!!

PinkPoinsettias · 15/12/2008 21:22

never have before but the postie we've had here since moving is a lovely man who goes out of his way to hide packages for us so we don't have to collect them from the depot and is extremely polite and friendly.

ilikeyoursleeves · 15/12/2008 21:29

Same here Pinkpoinsettia, I've never tipped before but the posties here are particularly fab.

no, but if yours goes above and beyond the call of duty then why not - a fiver to get a drink?
And the bin men - dont even start me on them - we have to leave the bin and boxes in the correct place facing the right way, and they empty them and just chuckt hem backa t your house, usually meaning I have to park the car in the middle of the road to move them so I can get on the drive.

HarktheheraldAnglepoise · 15/12/2008 21:30

I was going to start this thread. I have never done this but am wondering if we should - postie and binmen. What do you tip and how do you do it?

ilikeyoursleeves · 15/12/2008 21:35

Yeah I was thinking about a fiver each in a Christmas card? Think we will just have to try to catch them one day at the door.

yes we do and the bin men,
we usually give the postie £10 and the bin men £30 between the team.

nowwearefour · 15/12/2008 21:39

we do £10 for the postie (a regular manages to get the rental dvds through the door when everyone else just leaves them on the doorstep, hides parcels etc) and something similar for the binmen to share....

bellaBuonNatalevita · 15/12/2008 21:41

Yes I do. I usually put a note on the door asking for her to knock on xmas eves morning.

I tipped the window cleaner last week as it was his last visit before christmas.

Don't tip the bin men, possibly because I really don't get to speak to them like the others as they do the rounds at about 7.45am.

ChristmasPresence · 15/12/2008 21:47

We have a very helpful regular postman. Usually give him £5 of scratchcards in a Christmas card. He always mentions it to me after Christmas.. usually to say he's won nothing! Just thought it was a bit different to cash - and you never know he might win thousands...

Sidge · 15/12/2008 21:52

Our postie is fab - reliable, friendly and goes out of his way to make life easier for me, hiding parcels in a place we agreed on so that I don't have to go to the depot on Saturday morning.

I put a fiver in a card for him.

noiamnot · 15/12/2008 21:59

yes 10 euro. it is worth it believe me.

sleepyeyes · 16/12/2008 01:19

I wont be tipping my postman this year as last month he threatened me and he is no longer allowed to approach me.

But DH usual gave his postman a bottle of his favorite wine (the postmans not DH fav) as he knew his family so asked them fr a suggestion.

Not sure how to give the binmen a tip as we never see them but they are pretty good at picking up anything that drops out and even fetching you bin if it hasn't been put out.
Maybe leave some beer with a card to thank them.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/12/2008 07:15

Do you know his/her name? If you don't know their name it's a bit condescending to tip them IMHO: 'Hi Postman, got no idea what your name is but here's a quid'

fondant4000 · 16/12/2008 07:59

Always the bin men - £5. I have been known to run down the road, barefoot, in my nightie, in the freezing cold, to give it to them . Still it is 6.30am so no-one around

The postie if I remember to - £3

The recyclers are new, so I guess I'll havc to tip them too...
