It's just true isn't it?

All that faffing with coxandcox soft white tree sheaths but what children really like are the massive houses covered with flashing rope lights

Why is that?

Because children aren't paralysed by what other people think.
I also know lots of 'working class people' that don't have loads of lights up.
What a pants title for a thread. For many reasons I can't be arsed[you will all be relieved]to go into.

aww just think of those poor polar bears starving, as their ice caps are melting.

SO I keep driving my children on de-tours around the scary part of town where I can't leave the car in case I am chased by a pitbull

the lights are FABEROONI, the kids gasp in wonder

i was thinking this only as i was walking down the stairs from putting dds to bed that why is it that the areas where i live with the best/worst (Deending how you look at it!) lights are definitely the working class areas. But i do think the middle class are definitely getting braver and more of those new neon bright multi coloured lights are appearing where they would previously never have been seen! but inflatable santas or snowmen is reallygetting as good as it gets i reckon....

SatsumaMoon · 15/12/2008 19:40

There seem to be lots more houses with lights around here this year compared to last. Hasn't anyone heard of the credit crunch/energy crisis??

morningpaper · 15/12/2008 20:06

loads of light-purveyors have had pre-christmas sales so I reckon people are buying up cheap lights this year

I have been!

There are a lot of houses near us which are massively done up, lights everywhere, status, miniture displays of the reindeers pulling Santa's sleigh, a nativity scene.
They all do it for charity, loads of people just walk by and donate in their buckets which go to whatever charity the house is doing it for.
I think its lovely

I'm not sure class I am... we haven't even got a proper tree up this year, just my knee high metal tree!

moondog · 15/12/2008 21:41

I've always been tempted by a Cox & Cox tree sheath.
I already have two small ones for my bay trees.

PeachyBidsYouNadoligLlawen · 15/12/2008 21:47

PLease don't stop people decorating their houses with Christmas lights

Not that Dh sells loads of eleccy stuff (not lights- cables, controllers etc) to people who do, honest Guv

cherryontopofthexmastree · 15/12/2008 22:13

no dont stop the tacky lights!!! i think the lights are my absolute favourite part of christmas. bugger the kids- i love the lights!!!

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 15/12/2008 22:23

I live in Middlesbrough (but the posh bit) and we are surrounded by the most jaw-droppingly festooned houses - one woman near us covers her ENTIRE house in lights (flashing, natch) and does the whole charity thing. We take detours to see the houses, my 2 DD's LOVE this - we are a bit of a soft shite family, not being from here originally and have a feeble wisp of icicle lights.

I love the whole OTT-ness, cheers me up no end......

EachPeachPearMum · 15/12/2008 22:59

Colditz- am loving 'tacktastic lightporn' what an excellent phrase... it may even replace 'housebling' in our vocabulary chez EPPM!

whomovedmychocolate · 15/12/2008 23:04

Ahem

mrsruffallo · 16/12/2008 08:02

Yet another 'aren't working class people funny' thread title on mn.
Not all working class people have these kind of lights, some even have good taste

But if you find these stereotypes amusing far be it for me to rain on your lazy minded parade

AdventCandleQueen · 16/12/2008 08:12

I don't mind a tasteful one-colour light display, like this one

JollyPirate · 16/12/2008 08:17

There are several houses done up like this locally - one is raising money for the local hospice - another three houses in a row are very illuminated and are raising money for the Special care baby unit.

Not sure it's a "working class" thing. I work and have NO lights outside.

Am assuming thread title is tongue in cheek.

morningpaper · 16/12/2008 08:18

oooh yes working classes ARE funny aren't they - dressing up their houses to entertain children at christmas! When they must know that all sensible people put only WHITE condoms on their trees so that the grown ups can sigh and decide it's tasteful

Halleleujah mrs R. (seeing as it s xmas! )

Mamazontopofsanta · 17/12/2008 19:06

back in my home town there was a road where pretty much every house made a real tacky effort.

i promised i would take teh kids to london to see the lights.....i drobe down this road insted

in my defence i did see the lights at oxford street that year and teh children would not have been impressed half as much as they were with this road.
