Vouchers?
An 'experience' day
Make him something

thirdname · 06/12/2008 14:49

do you have to? DH and don't give each presents for that reason. But we will go out for a meal or so.

thenewme · 06/12/2008 14:56

Oh yes. It is my BIL and he is always very generous with presents for us. I couldn't not buy him something. He just doesn't come up with many ideas.

I make DH stop buying things in October and stick it all on his Amazon wishlist so that I have a chance.

It's no good me trying to buy him a suprise as it will lurk, unused.

ssd · 06/12/2008 14:59

get him nothing, he sounds spoiled

TheNewsMongersGeansaiNollag · 06/12/2008 15:12

The Times the day he was born? a handknitted navy scarf? Nigella Lawson's #Rocky road biscuit (recipe in last weeks you).

thenewme · 06/12/2008 15:33

He isn't spoilt. Why do you say that, ssd.

The paper idea might work, thanks, TNMGN.

its just that I thought imagine posting a thread saying

"what can I buy my 8 year old who gets what he wants when he wants it"

just sounds spoilt to me

christywhisty · 06/12/2008 17:38

Doesn't sound spoilt at all. My DH is like that, things that he really wants are things we can't afford anyway. He is a nightmare to buy for.

LilRedWG · 06/12/2008 17:40

DH is the same so he has lots of things such as a mug with photos of DD on, etc, etc. He is fully aware that he's a PITA to buy for and loves his little thoughtful gifts.

[www.iwantoneofthose.com has loads of gadgets and silly things for people who are hard to buy for.

www.iwantoneofthose.com Sorry now the links have been made easier I can't seem to do them

Amapoleon · 06/12/2008 17:48

YES!

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/12/2008 17:51

Can you give us an idea of budget?

compo · 06/12/2008 17:52

what about one of those microlight torches to keep in the car?

compo · 06/12/2008 17:53

or does he like holidays? what about 2009's best B&B's or campsites, or weekend breaks depending on what he likes?

or wine, Oz Clarke has a new 2009 guide to the best wine just out

thenewme · 06/12/2008 18:15

Present got thank you.

ssd - he is a single man who works and therefore has his own money. If he wants something and can afford it, he buys it. That does not make him spoilt.

Of course a 38 year old is completely different from a child.

OP posts:
ssd · 06/12/2008 19:14

to me its different if he is single

I thought he was your dh, I am presuming a married man with kids, and the thought of a married man with kids buying what he wants when he wants just seems a bit selfish to me (as if he is putting himself first all the time instead of considering the family budget)

therfore I apologise as I jumped to the wrong conclusion and I was in the wrong

good luck with your present buying

EachPeachPearMum · 06/12/2008 20:07

ssd- some people can actually afford to buy what they want when they want it- maybe he doesn't have particularly expensive tastes, or want things very often?

Umlellala · 06/12/2008 20:21

A fire extinguisher?

Dh keeps saying we should get one...

Umlellala · 06/12/2008 20:21

Oh, just seen you got it. What did you get?

ssd · 06/12/2008 20:23

yes, I imagine they can

but as I have already explained, I was imagining, wrongly, that the man in question was married with kids and still choose to buy what he wanted when he wanted and I know in rl some men who still spend like they are single with no responsibility and its the wife and kids who make the cut backs

thats what I meant by "spoilt"

but, again, I was wrong and I have apologised

georgimama · 06/12/2008 20:23

Did anyone actually come up with a suggestion, because I need the same thing for DH (who probably is spoiled by ssd's estimation, but as he works 60+ hours a week to provide for me and DS I think he's entitled to buy what few things he wants as and when he wants them)....

DesperateHousewifeToo · 06/12/2008 20:28

My bil could be described like the above (minus the 'spoilt').

I usually ask my sis what he wants. This year she says he needs a paper shredder!

Otherwise, he would get a book (last was pop-up kama sutra), cheese, wine or cashmere socks (if I can find any for £10-15).

Whar did you get?
