How much do you spend on gifts for your kids?

I spent the day shopping today for my DD (2 in March), came home with two bags of toys. I didn't feel like I over-bought, but when I totalled everything up it came to £170! What do you spend on each child on presents from Santa?

More than that unfortunately....and I have 3

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 05/12/2008 22:35

Usually about £60 each.

But this year is a bit different, because we have got them a Nintendo Wii between them, plus other pressies.

I daren't add it up

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 05/12/2008 22:35

By the way, as they get older the presents get pricier (but smaller!)

I've got 2 dc's.......13 and 8

whomovedmychocolate · 05/12/2008 22:35

Ooh not that much - about £60 on DD and about £50 on DS (he's only 4 months and isn't really aware it's christmas and has inherited a lot from DD).

They just get overwhelmed if you get them more than four things anyway.

ChristmasPresence · 05/12/2008 22:38

We've spent £100 on each (have 2 DCs) and I really think that's too much. Even though we can afford it (and I consider myself incredibly lucky for that), I still feel that it seems like a lot. However, neither of them ever demands anything, so I don't think they're spoiled at all. Also, a few years back we asked relies/friends not to buy for our DCs any more, but to donate to charity instead and we do the same. So the only presents they get are from us and my parents. We have sponsored a child in Senegal with the money we've saved not buying tat presents for distant relatives.

ChasingSquirrels · 05/12/2008 22:38

I got my 2yo a remote controlled (well wire controlled) Dinosaur in Asda today for £3.91, was looking to spend £15-£20 on his main present, but he saw this and loved it - so who am I to argue
Have spent no more than £20 on 6 stocking fillers.

knittingmama · 05/12/2008 22:39

Eeeek, feeling guilty. Feel like we never buy her any new toys the rest of the year- she just gets the occasional charity shop find... Oh please someone else tell me they've spent this much...

tat

Wendyjayb · 05/12/2008 22:40

We've spent about £150 on ds this year

PinkTulips · 05/12/2008 22:41

over 450 euros on 2 kids

nancy75 · 05/12/2008 22:42

knittingmama, dont feel guilty, its up to you what you spend but if it makes you feel better i have spent about the same as you

knittingmama · 05/12/2008 22:43

Whew, thank you... my excuse is that half her family live in the US so she doesn't get much from relatives!

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 05/12/2008 22:43

If it makes you feel any better...

Nintendo Wii = £180
Extras for it! = £44
Ipod shuffle = £32
Cube world = £17

Well that comes to £273! And it doesn't include the small bits and bobs, like a wonderful pop up book for ds for £4. Toiletries for dd etc

In fact I had better stop....I'm feeling quite light headed!

Mind you, this year is rather a one off because of the Wii. This will NOT set a precedent.

nancy75 · 05/12/2008 22:44

half dds family live in australia and she is lucky if they send her a card, so i do tend to overspend on because of it.

ThisMessageWillSelfDestruct · 05/12/2008 22:47

I spent £200 just on DS's main pressie but only £12 on DD's!! i figure they are not aware of amount spent so it doesn't matter. Have prob spent at least another £100 each on them on top.

ChasingSquirrels · 05/12/2008 22:48

fab name!

ChasingSquirrels · 05/12/2008 22:51

although I have just seen your WillsElf one on another thread - which is v v good!

ELMOchristmascountdown · 05/12/2008 22:51

i soent about £100 by time i add up one big present each (max 50 quid each) and stocking fillers.

they're only 1.8month and 2.10 month.

they will get so much other crap that i dont see the need for anything else.

although dp has gone off abroad to gp. he's taken an empty suitcase "just in case"

which means he'll come back with an almighty pile of shite.

ceciliaaherne · 05/12/2008 22:53

approx 150 X 3

ChristmasPresence · 05/12/2008 22:54

knitting - don't feel guilty. if you can afford it and your DC is happy, then no problem. Doesn't matter what anyone else does. Maybe next year you'll only spend £50.

KittyFloss · 05/12/2008 23:04

If you can afford it why on earth would you feel guilty for spending £170 it's hardly an extortionate amount.

I will probably spend £100 on each of my dc's and we have a wii as a family present, it's what we can afford and they don't get much from family.

If I had more I would spend more, I hate this "I got my dc a crappy present from a charity shop" so I'm better than you attitude, it's bollocks.

KittyFloss · 05/12/2008 23:06

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH, mumsnet is so fucking annoying and conformist recently

knittingmama · 06/12/2008 09:05

Whoa there, Kittyfloss... conformist because of the charity shop gift thing, or conformist because of spending lots of money?

MrsMattie · 06/12/2008 10:16

Budgeted £70 and ended up spending £100 on DS.

DD is only going to be 6 weeks old at Xmas time, so have spent about a tenner on her
