How much do you spend on gifts for your kids?

I spent the day shopping today for my DD (2 in March), came home with two bags of toys. I didn't feel like I over-bought, but when I totalled everything up it came to £170! What do you spend on each child on presents from Santa?

DD is three and I have gotten her:

A bike £50
Toy Story I and II £10
Sleeping Beauty £10
Kung Fu Panda £10
A few books £20
Sleeping Beauty Pj's £15 (expensive but silky pink and lovely!)
Disney Princess Connect 4 £10
Bits and Bobs £20
Disney Bedtime clock £15

didn't realise I'd spent that much! Though in fairness I have been getting bits and bobs throughout the year paying cash rather than credit, so should feel not too bad about it!

All my other family pressies have been paid cash too, I put cash away through the year, so feeling a bit better and less stressed than what I've spent iyswim, only DH's pressie went on my cc card (ds)

We got away lightly this year! Our daughter spotted a keyboard with microphone in the Early learning centre shop window ages ago and hasn't stopped talking about it. So we knew exactly what to buy her! That was only 40 quid. The only other things she has talked about are the wiggles, so we got her a new dvd, and those Daisy books by Kes Grey and Nick Sharratt. So we've bought her 2 of them. Total probably comes to about 55 quid. We've also got a big family so she gets loads off other people too of course.

Last year we spent well more than that though so it changes from year to year. If people can afford to spend loads on their kids then thats great. I agree that everyone is different and has different circumstances so live and let live I say!

I can only see there being a problem when people buy loads and loads who can't really afford it and then spend all year paying it off!

About £200 each, DD wanted a DS so that and games take a chunk of it, then have got her lot's of little bits to open. DS has got a Thomas scooter, easel, baby born doll and pushchair and lot's of stocking fillers

hercules1 · 06/12/2008 11:22

£70 on two stockings. 13 yr old ds £160 - ds with games. DD (5) will be about 60.

Hulababy · 06/12/2008 11:24

Normally around £150 on DD; never have proper budget though so sometimes more sometimes less. This year is different as we have also bought her a digital piano so she can begin piano lessons in the New Year. That is not really in her budget though as more like a one off purchase.

mumeeee · 07/12/2008 15:38

My DD's are 21.18 and 16. We now spend around £100 each. That is £50 -$60 on a main present and around £40 on a stocking each.
Wehn they were under 10 we spent £50 maximum which including main present and stocking each.

DasherDancerPrancerFMVixen · 07/12/2008 15:52

This year I have spend £60 between the two of them. (lego to share)
But ds1 has his birthday on 23rd of december and we have bought him a second hand laptop (a needful thing as he has to print out all his homework due to handwriting problems) and ds2 had his birthday at end of october and had a similarly big present.
as a result, dh and I are buying each other very token presentsm, like a book. Which I am more than happy with as I don't need anything.

AlexandraPeppernose · 07/12/2008 18:29

I spend £50 on each of them

TurquoiseNicki · 09/12/2008 10:12

I set a budget, £250 each kid (age 7 and 10) and stuck to it!

I have absolutely no idea. I have a feeling I would be if I totted it up. So I won't be!

merrykittymas · 09/12/2008 11:02

DD1 and 2 about £160 each all in all but a lot of that was 3 for 2's so probably cost less.

DD3 about £30

VinegarSantaGropedMyTits · 09/12/2008 11:05

I have spent £80 on ds2 so far, he is 2 and i think that is plenty

Have saved myself £43 by getting bargins and shopping around though

Ds1 is 19 so he will be getting some aftershave and probably a dvd boxset or something, have yet to shop for him

poshwellies · 09/12/2008 11:23

We are financially in the shit this year so they will get what we can suitably afford.

fairydust · 09/12/2008 11:31

dd's come £350
dss comes to £365

and yet i still feel they hav'nt got enough

poshwellies · 09/12/2008 11:31
tjacksonpfc · 09/12/2008 12:38

is that buying them things that they have asked for fairydust or things you think they want and out of interest what ages are your dcs for you to have spent that much and not feel like its enough.

i got my dd a my litte pony castle in woolworths that was 69.99 and i got it for £15. she will get some other bits and pieces aswell

and my ds a dr who taris and ugly voice changer thing at a market for £10 and he will get some other bits and pieces to so i suppose all in all they will have about £50 each spent on them from us this year as that is all we can afford and we refuse to go into debt for xmas they will also get loads from familys my dd is 4 and ds is 3

tootyflooty · 09/12/2008 13:09

I try not to spoil them, although I don't get them much other than at Christmas or birthdays.
I have 3 dc, don't always spend equally , but try to get them the same number of parcels, but probably around about 200.00 each, including the stocking, it depends on the cost of the main pressie, this year ds1 is getting a psp and ds2 and dd, are getting a dslite each. I do make a point of not getting eveything from the list .They aren't in the least bit spoilt and are always happy with their presents, in fact the best thing about christmas for the youngest two (10 yr old twins) and I quote, is "mad uncle jason telling them a made up story on christmas eve, and listening for the sleigh bells (provided by me !!!)

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 09/12/2008 13:14

No idea. I only have the one and thankfully money is not an issue. I do try not to go overboard though.

He didn't want any big presents this year - most expensive item is a Nintendo game. Actually no - most expensive item is a football jersey he wants.

amess · 09/12/2008 13:18

I've just been shopping and got so fed up of counting the pennies and finding that the presents don't look like much that I've bought them most of their wish list and blown the budget - just plain fed up! So spent about 150 each have two dc.

Fennel · 09/12/2008 13:55

I don't usually add it up but I would probably be surprised how much if I did.

It depends if you include things they'd have got anyway, things like a big climbing frame say, and call that a Christmas present. We tend to do that.

And I am compulsively buying them books this year and last year, lots and lots of my childhood favourites and new ones I like the look of, which add up, but aren't exactly presents, you could see them as Educational Resources
