I can't think for the life of me what to buy my grandmother. She's 89, pretty frail, sadly she's now blind too. She finds talking books a bit hard to follow esp as she can't operated the cd/tape player easily. Every year I get her either a shawl/scarf, a photo of ds (obv not appropriate now she is blind), a pot plant or a brooch. I'm struggling this year.

What's your present dilemma?

bb - maximum £50

bollockbrain · 01/12/2008 15:56

fruittea - an anorak? all train people like those!

Hassled · 01/12/2008 15:56

Fruittea - thanks for that - hadn't thought about food

bollockbrain · 01/12/2008 15:56

dg - any hobbies?

DumbledoresGirl · 01/12/2008 15:56

HF, dh travels a lot for work and already has the noise cancelling headphones. Good idea though as yes it would be his sort of thing.

timmette · 01/12/2008 15:57

Can anyone help with my sister and her fiancee's pressie as I am stuck, they are getting married in Feb and have most things on their wedding list. I wanted to get them a joint pressie - was thinking of a silver photo frame with a nice photo of them in - or is this too old fashioned? Budget is prob up to 150.

HeadFairy · 01/12/2008 15:57

noise cancelling headphones

ots of railway crap stuff on ebay

Hassled · 01/12/2008 15:58

DG - an iPhone voucher? Then he can just download the £50 worth of music direct. Or one of those thingies that's an alarm clock and an Ipod docking station - so you wake up to Ipod music (I'm trying to think where I saw one).

HeadFairy · 01/12/2008 15:58

ah, damn! Does your budget stretch to an e reader? good for travelling with, no books to carry!

I have bought him one book already which I want to read but one of the children will give him that.

He doesn't have time for hobbies at the moment really although he plays tennis (not enough now though) and has a huge garden to maintain.

bollockbrain · 01/12/2008 15:58

pmsl - railway crap

fruittea · 01/12/2008 15:59

timmette - digital frame?

DG - yes, he likes old trains, but has lots of that sort of book so it would be impossible to buy without a list from him. I've bought him "engine driver" mugs etc in the past.

BB - lol @ anorak Maybe I could pop a notebook in the pocket too

bollockbrain · 01/12/2008 16:00

DG - how about something for the garden then? A tool of some nature, maybe a bit boring but useful - credit crunch and all that, then maybe make him a hamper of all his favourite foods and beers or a dvd

HeadFairy · 01/12/2008 16:01

i pod alarm clock not a bad idea hassled, I might nick it

SnowMuchToBits · 01/12/2008 16:01

fruittea - how about a voucher for a steam railway, or some railways do a scheme where you can go and learn to be an engine driver for a day? Don't know if there are any in his area of the country that might do that?

Hassled · 01/12/2008 16:01

Fruittea - lots of Steam Train experiences here but few of them are especially cheap.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/12/2008 16:02

fruittea, there are also, no I am not making this up and no my dh does not have one! but there are also dvds you can buy of old footage of trains (sometimes the view from the driver's cab as the train goes down a line). Some train fanatics find them more interesting than a blockbuster movie!

cremolafoam · 01/12/2008 16:02

ooh i'd ove one of those e- books

best gadgetry can be found here

bythepowerofgreyskull · 01/12/2008 16:02

head fairy - how old is your DS?

could you do a collage with him, fabrics and gems and stuff that all feels different - will look nice to those who can see but will feel nice for those who can't.

if your DS wouldn't do that perhaps a lovely lavender scented cushion?

Am stuck with my brother - married - minimalist home - no kids - buy him a pointless gadget every year he smiles and I assume his wife tidies it away never to be found again.

Hassled · 01/12/2008 16:02

Great minds...

SleighGirl · 01/12/2008 16:04

Yes I suppose I could get itunes for dh (how do I do that though), it's not much to unwrap though - I have not got him anything at all yet from me or the dds

cremolafoam · 01/12/2008 16:04

head Fairy what about a wind up radio for Granny?

thenewme · 01/12/2008 16:05

Something my inlaws can buy my 5 year old DD and 3 year old DS. DD doesn't want anything other than one thing we have bought her. DS just wants a pan.

HeadFairy · 01/12/2008 16:05

BTPOGS, he's only 14 months so a bit young for that, but I'll file that away for next year

Could you get your brother an orchid? White? suitably minimalist?
