Have we had a thread about wrapping paper?

Or is it too dull?

I need to find longer than average rolls, which are thicker than average. Each year I wrap big presents in thin crappy paper which splits, and I spend most of Xmas Eve taping up the split bits
( I wrap in early Dec and store until Xmas Eve when I put them all under the tree)
Anyone got any tips?
Thanks

you are just like me, with the torn paper as it goes in and out of the loft!

Yes, we need thicker stuff deffo.

MegGriffin · 19/11/2008 20:24

Don't know if this will help but I saw some extra wide rolls to day in Woolies for those extra big boxes. I dont know what the quality is like though.

2point4kids · 19/11/2008 20:24

ime the cheaper the paper, the thinner it is.
Get nice shiny thick paper from M&S or Debenhams I'd say

blametheparents · 19/11/2008 20:24

I do like M&S wrapping paper, and it is quite good quality. Also it is on 3 for 2 at the moment. I sotre my presents too and I have not had any rips in the paper.

milge · 19/11/2008 20:26

BTP, I used m&s last year, and it still ripped. Would be ok overnight I guess, but not great. I am probably going to have to drive to Bristol to get to a John Lewis. It seems to be the answer to most things on MN!

John Leiws may well be fiendishly expensive - ouch!

WTSS · 19/11/2008 20:39

buy a big roll of white paper from IKEA - (next to where they sell the kiddie easels.) get your kids to potato print xmas trees, stars or just scrawl all over it in silver and gold pen and use it as wrapping paper. its nice and thick, you won't use it all so have lots left for the rest of the year and its
much cheaper than buying the stuff.

HTH

broodymom · 19/11/2008 20:47

if you can get to cosco they are selling long rolls of thick paper.

blossomsmine · 19/11/2008 20:52

The white paper is a good idea Last year i bought mine from WHSmith as it was a really nice design and on 3 for 2, i found it was really strong. I would be interested in finding a cheaper strong paper though!!

AbbaFan · 19/11/2008 20:57

I like the whsmiths paper too. The stuff I had last year had grids on the back, so that you could cut in a straight line.

Big bonus for me.

PortAndLemon · 19/11/2008 20:57

I'm planning to do lining paper, tie nice ribbon round and call it Scandinavian Chic (Similar to the IKEA idea, but it's a bit of a trek for me to go to IKEA just for paper)

TheOtherMaryPoppinsFleckles · 19/11/2008 20:58

Brown parcel paper could be the way to go, looks fab-u-lous when tied with glittery string or stamped with potato prints. Other than that, Asda have some very large giftbags?

AbbaFan · 19/11/2008 20:59

ooh i love giftbags

cheekysealion · 19/11/2008 21:02

IKEA use to do lovely brown paper,

i tried to get some a few months a go but they said they had stopped doing it...

maybe it will be back for christmas..

i like m&s paper

blueshoes · 19/11/2008 21:20

Brown Kraft Paper

Tied up with coloured raffia string is chic. although probably works best with neat rectangular presents, rather than big oddly shaped ones.

BirdyArms · 19/11/2008 21:28

I went to Ikea today and bought a 2-pack of long rolls of 'brown' paper - not actually brown but one roll of a colour eg dull red or green and one of a pattern printed on brown. Bought some other prettier paper but too but I fully expect it to be very thin.

PortAndLemon · 19/11/2008 21:32

According to my mother, last year from about 22 December Ikea were selling off giftbags for silly money (something like 50p for a set of five good-sized giftbags).

Mind you... the thought of Ikea a couple of days before Christmas...

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 19/11/2008 21:33

John Lewis gift wrap is very reasonably priced this year. I just picked up a stack on Monday - £2 for 4m on plain colours (gold, red, silver, green etc). They also did a multipack for £5 with 8m of wrap (2m of 4 different designs) with ribbons and bows.

milge · 19/11/2008 21:46

Will try Costco and Smiths, before I head off to JLP.
The thought of Ikea at Xmas makes me want to lie down ! Work FT so potato stamping is not going to happen, realistically!
Thanks everyone

Florists suppliers do good coloured brown paper IYSWIM - typically in 100M rolls. Also ribbons in long reels and bulk packs of tissue paper. I am trying and failing to remember the name of the one I used last.

Friendlypizzaeater · 19/11/2008 21:57

The 3m rolls at Matalan are thick stuff and on 3 for 2 at mo. Anything than 3m from there is thin stuff.

accordiongirl · 19/11/2008 21:58

www.thriftyfun.com/tf223897.tip.html American but useful!

janeite · 19/11/2008 21:59

I love brown parcel paper. No need to stamp it or potato print it. Tie it with red ribbon and stick a red and white striped candy cane under the ribbon.

LittleFairySmile · 19/11/2008 22:00

Def. wallpaper or lining paper, painted if you like (DS finger paints and sponge stamps) or left plain. Paper is so thick it's hard to fold to wrap.

Or go to shoe shops, get shoe boxes for free, paint them with left over wall paint from decorating, and tie with a ribbon. Will not rip even if they do get a little battered!

EachPeachPearMum · 19/11/2008 22:01

Waitrose have great paper- nice and thick, long rolls, and 10m long for £3.50
