always a problem i agree!

a golf set - can you ever have too many tees....?
new Jeremy Clarkson book in WHSmith?
chocolates that he doesn't have to share!?
um, socks....

y dad could actually do with one of those home office in the garden type things - tad too expensive though!

and mine is having a hip op today (fingers crossed) so don't know when he'll be playing golf again.
tinsel for his crutches?

anyone else?

Getting him a voucher for.... well haven't thought about that part yet. I always used to spend hours agonising then realised i don't get on with him and don't actually like him very much and .

Sorry that's no help is it?

I bought Mum and Dad an external hard drive as it is something that they would never buy themselves and will be handy for the thousands of photos of the kids.

I will send them some yummy Swiss chocolate too. Dark choc for Dad, with nuts, so that Mum will not snaffle it.

You could get a digital photo frame and preload photos of DCs if he's not that technical? Mine is getting the Bill Bailey Tinselworm DVD as sadly not that flush this year..

choosyfloosy · 18/11/2008 08:23

I buy mine wine, if anything. A CD of some music we both like (Schubert's Trout Quintet) went down very well one year. But usually by the time I've paid his train fare to see us, I can't afford much else. And this year we can't afford the train fare, so I doubt we'll do more than send him a card.

I am getting my dad and his girlfriend some meal vouchers so they can have a nice evening out together.

mogs0 · 18/11/2008 09:48

My Dad's really into cooking and entertaining, so bought him and step mum a mini-hostess trolley/food warmer. He's had it already and was really chuffed with it!!

Anna8888 · 18/11/2008 09:49

A dressing gown.

TsarChasm · 18/11/2008 09:52

Subscription for Private Eye. It's all my dad ever wants but he absolutely loves it!

bouncingblueberries · 18/11/2008 09:52

Last year a digital photo frame preloaded with photos of him with ds went down a storm!

This year, have ordered the UK at Home book with a customised cover of him and ds. See here Bought the book online from The Book People.

cmotdibbler · 18/11/2008 09:54

My Dad always gets a Good Gift (has previously been a bicycle for a midwife, hive of bees, fruit trees for adults with LDs etc) and a box of cherry chocolates. He wants or needs nothing, doesn't drink, and is genuinely happy with buying something for someone who needs it.

FIL gets a years subscription to 'Trout Fisherman' magazine which he loves getting every month, and is always telling us about the freebies he gets.

ohdearwhatamess · 18/11/2008 09:57

Joint present for my parents - an internet radio.

oxocube · 18/11/2008 10:47

A spade. which he has already bought himself in a sale. Not the most exciting but at least its something he actually will use.

mooseloose · 18/11/2008 11:12

a family history book. Thought about some theatre tickets for local theatre. A musical?

Tigerschick · 18/11/2008 11:19

I'm getting him what my mum told me he wants
A sleeveless jumper
A new trowel
Some Turkish Delight
A huge box of Jaffa Cakes

And a DVD between him and my mum.

It's his birthday a week before Christmas but luckily we're more of a bottle of wine for your birthday family, so it's not too tricky.

We're getting PIL a digital picture frame with pics of DD and DNs on it.

Sparkletastic · 18/11/2008 11:21

I have no idea what to give Dad(or Mum), but as Dad is starting his Cancer treatment this week, I know that if we are lucky enough to have him around still, that I'd love to give him something special, useful to him and something that will bring a smile to his face, but that will cost next to nothing because I don't have two pennies to rub together...Any ideas anyone please?

Aw thank you inzi, it's a good idea, but I don't have many photo's of my brothers Dc's and his evil exw has been far from gracious to him about them and there just aren't many. Could try one with my Dc's though...

BCNS · 18/11/2008 12:22

egypt · 18/11/2008 14:06

oo some good ideas here, will have to read properly later.

only prob is we are overseas so will have to be easy to send or bought online and sent direct which isn't very personal.

gave them a digi photo frame last year. am running out of the gadgety ideas. also i think he has the brain trainer. oh its so hard when you dont see them enough to even know what they have!!

sorry to hear about your dad solo, hope he is soon in recovery
