It always disappoints me if I'm offered mulled wine - would rather a decent glass of untampered with red

Mmmmmm Mulled wine (phantom drools)! M&S make a nice bottle.

I only llike the very very sweet, cherry flavoured gluhwein that you can buy at Edinburgh's winter wonderland. Makes you all fuzzy and affectionate after three gulps.

expatinscotland · 27/10/2008 17:19

'Makes you all fuzzy and affectionate after three gulps.'

DH and I had three of cups of that and then went on the ferris wheel as a date night one year.

But we weren't just fuzzy.

We were drunk!

bellavita · 27/10/2008 17:21

I like it too - I also like Lemsips MAS

pointygravedogger · 27/10/2008 17:27

The difference between three gulps and three cups is enormous

procrastinatingparent · 27/10/2008 17:29

The problem is I only have the recipe in huge drinks party quantities.

But here it is:
3 litres wine (tbh I use anything that comes in a 3 litre box and isn't the bottom of the range because you can't really taste the difference with all the brandy and sugar. Am happy for a wine snob to prove me wrong - although I don't think wine snobs drink mulled wine anyway )
1200ml water
700g caster sugar
1200ml orange juice
4 cinnamon sticks broken in half
24 cloves
350ml brandy

Mix water and sugar in large saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until sugar dissolved. Add wine and OJ and spices. Slowly bring just to the boil, then remove quickly from heat, add brandy and strain.

I like it because it has no bits floating in it. It is quite sweet, though; seems to slip down very easily.

I love mulled wine. I like lots of 'warm alcohol' drinks though.

I'm not keen on red wine and prefer white generally. But love mulled wine. Yum yum.

fossa · 27/10/2008 17:42

The trick is, to boil the spices but never boil the wine.

So, put your spices in a small amount of water, and simmer for 5 or 10 minutes ( makes the kitchen smell fabulous) then, add the rest of the stuff and reheat to piping hot.

MrsJamin · 27/10/2008 17:44

ooh yes lovely with a bit of brandy

pointygravedogger · 27/10/2008 18:33

my heart sinks when people say they have made mulled wine or punch.

It's always narsty and bitter

procrastinatingparent · 27/10/2008 18:36

No, no, pgd - this recipe is verrrry sweet. Which some people may not like. But definitely not bitter.

lissielouisscaredofthedark · 27/10/2008 18:38

i love mulled wine. but only if its really spicy. also love hot apple schnapps

MrsGhoulofGhostbourne · 27/10/2008 18:41

yes, love it, Xmas starts with the first glass

IllegallyBrunette · 27/10/2008 18:43

I love it, can't wait for our annual trip to the Frankfurt xmas market (in brum), just for that.

cheerycherry · 27/10/2008 18:54

Yum, love it!

LilRedWGoreandguts · 27/10/2008 18:55

Not a particular fan but always feel as though I should like it.

zippitippitoes · 27/10/2008 18:57

horrid but in the absence of proper drink ill have it

Horton · 27/10/2008 19:03

Horrible stuff. I'd rather have water, frankly.

Carmenere · 27/10/2008 19:10

I do like really good mulled wine but my favourite is mulled cider. that is fabulous in cold weather.

expatinscotland · 27/10/2008 19:19

recipe for the cider, please

i can't wait to be over this teetotal shit.

Carmenere · 27/10/2008 19:39

Dry cider heated with honey, cinnamon, cloves and if you are naughty a shot of calvados. Thinly sliced apples to garnish. It is ridiculously delicious expat. I first had it this time last year in Lake Saronac in upstate NY, it was FREEZING out on the lake and then we had mulled cider in front of a HUGE US-style open fire, it was all terribly Ralph Lauren and very far from my normal life.

TheOtherMaryPumpkins · 27/10/2008 19:58

oh mulled cider, now that sounds delicious!

Have noted down recipes for both, thanks

expatinscotland · 27/10/2008 20:05

have printed out this recipe.

as a winehead, i can't bring myself to do the mulled thing to wine.

PortAndDemon · 27/10/2008 20:07

Yes (wine or cider), if have just come in from long cold walk in frosty winter. If I'd been sitting around in the warm all day I'd rather just have the regular wine.

pointygravedogger · 27/10/2008 20:11

hhh cider punch with calvados... maybe I could...
