We will be working Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Hogmanay....loads of stock to feed and attend to.

Peridot30 · 19/10/2008 01:50

IM not working christmas as boss fairly sympathetic to families and we get christmas off. I usually work hogmany but i dont mind

brightwell · 19/10/2008 09:58

I'm working night's Christmas Eve & Christmas Day and probably New Year's eve....short straw again....yet again!

cheshirekitty · 19/10/2008 10:14

NHS pays time and two thirds for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

For New Years Eve you get your simple time. No extra pay.

For the 2nd time in a row I will not be working Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Years Day as I now have a clinic job and we are all off.

I can sympathise though, as in the past 27 years I have done a good few Christmas's.
I think working as a nurse is different then working in retail as all the patients/relatives feel sorry for us working the hols, as opposed to shouting at retail staff for "ruining their Christmas"!!

What is that about? Cannot fathom going out to the sales on Boxing Day.

Sillyworry · 19/10/2008 10:35

Working NYE night duty hopefully up Town,Its okay because I always end up working with m'e mates, Always take supplies of Hot hands, paracetamol and wear so many clothes that I can't tie up my shoes laces haha! As long as someone doesn't puke on me it'll be okay Always end up working my birthday or my Birthday weekend as it falls around Remembrance Sunday. Getting Xmas off this year TG. Thinking of you all that have to work Xmas.

I used to work xmas and new year years ago when i worked in a hospital/nursing homes.

I am a CM (for 14 years) and for the first time ever i am off for the whole shebang.

Finish up the 19th Dec and back on the 5th Dec. Just lucky because of what my current parents are doing,1 teacher training,1 teacher assistant training and 1 goes to grannys every hols.

Will never happen again i reckon so will really enjoy it!!!

HeadFairy · 19/10/2008 19:42

nappyaddict - sorry for long delay, been out all day. Our normal shifts are 12 hours, but on Christmas day we usually split them so we do an early shift, usually around an 8am start finishing around 2pm or a shift starting at 2pm finishing around 10pm. If I absolutely have to work this christmas I'm going to ask for the early shift if it's around. DS will be up at 6am anyway, I can have an hour and a half with him and dh, and then off to work. Then hopefully if I'm away on time I can drive back to our house, pick them up on the way and scoot down to my mum and dads. I should be there around 3.30 to 4pm which means it's not too bad. We can have a late lunch and then stay the night.

nannyL · 19/10/2008 20:31

my boss is working... but i am not

i would never work Christmas, though saying that with my current family dynamics it would be more fun and easier for me to be 'at work' having christmas day with my dear darling charges who i love to bits .... (however that would just make it even more difficult for other members of my family)

merryandmad · 19/10/2008 20:57

I worked Christmas eve and Christmas day last year from 1600-2230 (admin office job- but open 365 days of the year).

I was allowed to work from home with laptop (though spent xmas day with parents & they only had dial up .

This year i am working the same hours on new years eve and new years day from home again.
It doesn't matter as we have young kids so not going out boozing & extra money aswell to spend after christmas in january pay packet when we are skint.

IAteDavinaForDinner · 19/10/2008 21:09

I am working Christmas this year. Always have to do one or the other. It's rubbish but I find people are on good form and you get a bit spoiled

DS will be 17 months so won't really get what's going on, the next time I do Christmas he'll be 3.5 and that'll be rotten.

The worst bit this year is that I don't normally do more than 6 days in a row but over Christmas I'll be doing nearly 3 weeks without a break - thankfully I get some of the nights off or I'd be loopy by the end of it!

I'm taking some comfort from the fact that so many others have to work over the festive season too - it's nice to know I'm not alone

brimfull · 19/10/2008 21:10

yes nice to know there are others working as well

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 19/10/2008 22:40

been informed today i will probably have to work later than 2. bit about that cos it means i will miss xmas dinner and playing games in the afternoon.

nappyaddict · 19/10/2008 22:46

ggirl what time does ds usually wake up? can't you tell him he's not allowed to go downstairs and see if santa's been until mummy is home? if he wakes up before he and dp could watch a xmassy film in bed or something?

brimfull · 19/10/2008 23:30

well he'll be awake early as he'll be so excited, was around 6 last yr.

Good idea about waiting until I get home before he comes downstairs.I worked the night before his birthdya this yr and he managed to wait untll I got home before he opened his presents.

OP posts:
brimfull · 19/10/2008 23:32

what do you do nappy?

could xmas dinner be later?
we don't usually eat until 5-6 ish

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 20/10/2008 00:55

waitress. i was hoping to get one of the cleaning shifts this year meaning i could finish at 2 but no such luck. looks like a 6pm finish for me which is too late for ds to wait. perhaps i can just move xmas to boxing day this year.

nappyaddict · 20/10/2008 00:56

ggirl - what do you do for lunch then on xmas day?

brimfull · 20/10/2008 08:34

late breakfast, snacky bits ie. chocolate for lunch
hope you get good tips on xmas day

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 20/10/2008 09:49

hmmm i don't think ds would wait much longer than 9am for breakfast and i don't think my mum will want to worry about cooking an extra meal. for dinner we usually just have turkey sandwiches but obviously can't have those for lunch if we haven't had the turkey yet.

littleboo · 20/10/2008 12:45

deany - out of hours so yes proper work not cover. work most weekends and some evenings.

littleboo · 20/10/2008 12:49

Seems to be loads of us working and lots of health service staff. Pts do tend to feel a bit sorry for you when you're working and if you put aside the missing bit with family it tends to be a good shift/good team and good spirit working these special days.... still if I had the choice would rather be at home ( but i'm sure thats the same for most) and you try to be fair to colleagues etc.
