HAha Fio, have had that line about ruined Christmases so many times!

HeadFairy · 17/10/2008 11:07

I'm working christmas day and Boxing day, no extra pay I've worked every Christmas for 6 years, (apart from last year, was on mat leave) this year I have a 15 month old and asked if I could be off.... bastards said no

cremolafoam · 17/10/2008 11:08

yes
Xmas eve
Boxing Day
and the whole of the follwing week and NYeve

hannahsaunt · 17/10/2008 11:13

I am secretly hoping VERY MUCH that dh will be working one of the Christmas days so that we get to stay at home and not have to travel to ILs...even if it is 'their' turn.

frazzled74 · 17/10/2008 12:44

I Worked christmas eve night year before last, left instructions that stockings could be opened but not the ones under the tree. (they werent allowed downstairs either). This year am working christmas day night. I actually like my job at christmas (nurse).feel sorry for people who work in retail and catering, all those nightmare customers.

carmenelectra · 17/10/2008 12:46

well ive put in all my requests for Christmas shifts. Im hoping i get Christams and Boxing day off. Not too bothered about new year. i will be working over the Christmas period though which i hate.

littleboo · 17/10/2008 12:49

Me lunchtime shift on christmas day (5hrs) and again same on boxing day. Have to leave all three dc's with hubby (4/9/12), maybe they'll cook me dinner, but it won't be the same.

littleboo · 17/10/2008 12:51

Oh and normal bank hol pay, nothing special ( although some members of same company get double time

littlestrawberry · 17/10/2008 14:37

We are expected to worh either christmas or new year which generally works out ok. There are only a few of us who do permanent nights and we tend to have an unwritten rule that if you worked christmas last year, you do new year this year.

It works quite well on the whole. In the past when management have done the rota for us, we have had problems. One year the manager decided we should all just do our regular shifts which meant those whose nights didn't fall on the holidays got both christmas and new year off and vice versa

nappyaddict · 17/10/2008 15:11

ggirl - what time will you be back? i might have to work xmas day

nappyaddict · 17/10/2008 15:15

littleboo and headfairy what do you do?

curlywurlycremeegg · 17/10/2008 15:17

We used to self rosta and even Christmas/New Year used to work out well. I never mineded working New Year, was also happy to work mid or late shift on Christmas day and anything on Boxing Day but always used to have Christmas Eve and the early on Christmas day off as I loved to see DS1 go to bed and get up all excited, I haven't worked in the NHS since I had DD so not had to struggle with it for a while, did end up working Boxing Day last year as a client had her baby then, but it was very close to my IL's house so fitted in well actually!

Scotia · 17/10/2008 15:25

This will be the first year in 20-odd years my dh won't be working over Christmas. He is a chef and has never had anything other than his normal pay whatever days he has worked. Maybe a tip if he was lucky, but as people have paid for their Christmas lunches in advance, they don't tend to leave a tip.

He has changed employer now (working in a college) and will be off for TWO WEEKS over the holidays - he can't get his head around it!

mosschops30 · 17/10/2008 15:37

I will be, ive put myself for Christmas Eve and New Years eve day and new years day night.

I dont care what I get as long as I can have xmas morning with the children. Working Xmas sucks big time!!

HeadFairy · 17/10/2008 17:27

nappyaddict, I work at BBC News, so I can't really complain. I know there's news on Christmas day, but for once I'd love to have the day off. I do get a free copy of the radio times though

mashedbanana · 17/10/2008 19:35

working xmas eve then on holiday for 10 days.may offer to work boxing day if short.

moocowmrs · 17/10/2008 19:54

Sorry to be smug, but i am over the moon and now i cant wait!

deanychip · 18/10/2008 19:39

littleboo, how come you have to work as a practitioner? Are you shop floor based, or do you have to fill in on a ward somewhere?
Thought you might have a few perks thats all.
Also what do we get paid for these days. nye for example? (nhs)its not double time is it?

Tas1 · 18/10/2008 20:29

I worked Christmas day last year and I'm working christmas eve night this year. I work for an emergency service which is open 365 days a year so have worked the christmas and new year period for the last 17 years.

nappyaddict · 19/10/2008 00:27
