I'm looking for an excuse for not taking down my fairy lights and twigs

I had covid for 3 weeks and missed Christmas. I put up a few fairy lights and twigs and they are so pretty, I don't want to take them down. But I'm quite superstitious and really can't handle any more issues. Is it really bad luck not to take them down by 12th night? Thank you

Old tradition would be to leave them up till Candlemas. Think that's 2nd February! Embrace being old school.

ChristmasHug · 02/01/2026 19:25

Are they Christmas decorations though? Sounds more like winter decor to light up your home during the dark months.

Get rid of anything that screams Christmas but leave the rest.

EchoedSilence · 02/01/2026 19:25

I have fairy lights up all year.

itispersonal · 02/01/2026 19:26

We kept our warm light fairy lights up all year last year in our lounge and will do the same this year! Makes the room so cosy!

And there’s always a random Christmas decoration which gets missed and stays out all year!!!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 02/01/2026 19:28

If you're really worried about superstition, take down your Christmas lights and replace them with another set that aren't used at Christmas.

Squirrelchops1 · 02/01/2026 19:29

Ive decided to pack away baubles but am going to leave real tree and lights up a bit longer

Summergarden · 02/01/2026 19:34

Ignore the superstitions- in the lockdown years I felt so distraught at the prospect of taking down the Christmas tree and its bright lights that it stayed up well into February! Nothing bad happened that year I promise 😉.

But what you describe doesn’t sound particularly Christmas themed and would be absolutely fine to leave up all winter. We have lots of strings of fairy lights in the living areas and I love the warming glow they emit to brighten up the dark winter months.

FollowSpot · 02/01/2026 19:37

If you like them, keep them!

Fairy lights and twigs are not just for Christmas - they are generic decs and therefore exempt from superstition!

Frenchfemme · 02/01/2026 19:38

Definitely an old tradition to leave up until Candlemass (Imbolc). Something to brighten up dark dreary January.

MamaBobo · 02/01/2026 19:45

We leave our tree up until after our wedding anniversary…and that’s at the end of January! We’ve done that for years…close to 20….and I can categorically state that it has brought no bad luck!!

Most of the Christmas traditions in the UK are of relatively recent vintage…the idea of a festival in the depth of winter is much older…called by many names and aimed at bringing light into the darkness. Bring a little light into the darkness and keep your decorations up!!

MMXXVI · 02/01/2026 19:47

Leave them up forever. They are then no longer Xmas decorations so no need for you to be superstitious.

Berlinlover · 02/01/2026 19:50

My childhood neighbours used to leave their Christmas tree up until March and never had an ounce of bad luck.

FairViewRosie25 · 02/01/2026 19:56

We have a Father Christmas figure. It dawned on us one August that he was still sat out on a shelf.

WildFlowerBees · 02/01/2026 19:56

Superstitions are nonsensical, fairy lights and twigs are more a wintering tradition so enjoy them until winter is over.

FairViewRosie25 · 02/01/2026 20:00

I’ve got a holly garland on the front windowsill with tea lights, before that I had mini pumpkins with tea lights. I like the effect, not sure what I can do next?

That's a good spin on it, thank you 😁

Don't take them down! I leave my fairy lights up in the hall until the end of February usually as they give the place such a cosy glow and keep a bit of that festive magic going though the winter.

Diamondsbutnoknickers · 03/01/2026 14:18

It's quite common to decorate your house for each season.

Plus, are fairy lights really just for Christmas? I've had a picture rail put up and am looking for some lovely lights to keep up all year. 😊

miamo12 · 03/01/2026 14:18

Fine to keep greenery and lights up until candlemass (2nd feb) in fact across much of Europe I’ve seen full decorations up in mid January but you won’t see them in November unlike in the uk! Keep them up - I’m taking my decorations off my tree but keep it up with just the lights through January

flumposie · 03/01/2026 19:29

I keep lights on my fireplace and side board all year. I have tea light holders with deer, stars etc until spring.

ConnieHeart · 03/01/2026 19:33

Just do whatever you want. Nothing brings bad luck. You are in control of your destiny not some superstitious claptrap

Rituelec · 03/01/2026 19:34

Leave them up till Imbolc (feb 1st!) I do.

Makingpeace · 03/01/2026 19:34

Fairy lights are fairy lights and twigs are twigs!

As long as you don't call them Christmas lights or a Christmas wreath /tree then you're golden 👌💫

PevenseygirlQQ · 03/01/2026 19:36

You don’t need an excuse, keep them up if it makes you happy! X
