I nipped to Tesco today for milk and bread only to find complete and utter chaos

I can go to Aldi at 7am when they open or 9am and wondering which to do!

Oh god this is giving me fear as I’m going to have to go Christmas Eve (working 22/23.) Gah that will teach me not to get an online slot!

Horrorscope · 20/12/2025 23:11

I’ve just been to my local, large Tesco (and told my daughter if I didn’t return it would be because I’d been trampled to death in the stampede). However, it was pretty quiet and just like a normal Saturday evening - and everything was in plentiful supply!

legogal1 · 20/12/2025 23:12

Is this really a topic

Denim4ever · 20/12/2025 23:16

Basically, sprouts and greens bought Mon or Tues will be ok. Earlier not

Edited

That's because Christmas Day is Thursday and it's only Saturday

Jonnyenglish · 20/12/2025 23:18

basically standstill at high noon,

The butcher told me not to go Monday as that is collection day -

I think it’s hot and miss.

Anyone done M&S christmas eve? Wonder if it’s worth the effort

Assume it's not collection day for a turkey that's cooked on a Thursday?

What's the point of this impolite reply? Use common sense and dint buy your veg too early

Mistyglade · 21/12/2025 00:51

Supermarkets are normal here in south London, trains on the other hand are either full or cancelled. Plenty of dickhead impatient drivers about too.

bonesandbooth2025 · 22/12/2025 09:39

I decided not to go first thing, have come now and the queue is onto the main road Blush

I went to Tesco at 6am this morning. DH decided he wanted to come along because I go early every year and always return home saying it was busy and he wanted to see it for himself.
Back home and unpacked by 7am, I can’t be bothered with queuing in car parks so it’s worth it to me getting up at 5:30am.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/12/2025 11:26

I left home at 7.40am this morning, 5 minute drive to Aldi. Car park was a quarter full! Must have been maybe 25 people in there. Straight to an empty till with nobody behind me until I was paying. I was home and unpacked by 9.20am.

The staff said it was dead at 7am and they’re expecting it to be the busiest day tomorrow

It was fine in Tesco around 11am. Got parked easier than on a Sat morning. They had loads of checkouts staffed at 11am in Tesco, not enough customers!

I reckon most people did their shops yesterday - turkeys last 5 days and most veg has dates until at least 25th/26th … bread not so good though!

OhamIreally · 22/12/2025 14:35

I’ve just been to a big M&S in the City. It was deserted. Amazing experience.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 22/12/2025 22:54

Tescos at 9am for me, 3 hours later when I left the traffic was backlogged over a mile long. It was crazy I had to keep taking time out in the quiet aisles.

I admit I usually don’t have an issue with families doing shopping together, we like to but I was getting so pissed off with everything being blocked by husbands with trolleys blocking everything whiles wife’s went off getting bits, whole families including parents and 3/4 children just blocking everything, then there were staff restocking and online shopping going on 🤯

I still didn’t get everything as most of the fruit and berries didn’t have decent dates on them.

While I was there I heard staff saying they were cancelling their click and collects as they were not eating what people were picking. One lady on the phone to her Dr saying she felt like she was going to collapse again and needed an urgent appointment and 5 min later trying to join a queue another lady saying don’t go that way they are stopping everyone as someone’s collapsed.

I went to my local small Morrisons and it was great. Got all of my Christmas food that I wanted.
Had everything in stock and wasn't that busy at all. Parking was no problem.
I expect the bigger stores will be much busier, so I'm glad I chose the small Morrisons, it's a fraction of the size compared to the much bigger ones with the full market street options etc.
just Aldi tomorrow for their alcohol as their own brand Bailey's is much cheaper, and I like their wine offers.

PaperMachePanda · 23/12/2025 01:34

Was in Lidl earlier and it was completely dead, not a soul in there other than me and the staff. It was 11am too, so not late.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 23/12/2025 08:56

Waitrose at 7.05am this morning was packed. I thought going at 7am when it opened it would be fairly quiet but I was wrong. I only needed a few things for dinner tonight too. No chance of getting a parking space after 9am as people park there to use the shops in town.

What pisses me off are all the bloody trolleys blocking aisles as people go off and get what they need or ponder over which bag of sprouts to get.
