I was chatting to someone at work and she casually revealed that she never wraps any Christmas presents for her kids. Or in fact, anyone.

just pops everything under the tree or in a pile and that’s it. Jobs a good un.

She couldn’t explain why really - just said she’d always done it that way so I’m turning to MN to ask … do you do this? And if so, why?

People tend to wrap personal presents from and to each other that are handed out in advance that will be sat around under trees etc... most books and films show Santa NOT wrapping presents though.

Apparently the 'wrap everything' lot just completely overlook this somehow and claim it doesn't happen but if you look back through most pop culture especially older examples you will see they don't tend to have wrapped presents from Santa only from person to person.

Its fine if you want to wrap everything, its fine to wrap just somethings, its fine not to wrap anything at all its fine to use sacks/stockings/bags in place of wrapping but the assertion that everyone wraps with paper and its just a few odd weirdos that do not to is just purely wrong.

As is the assumption that 'everyone' you know must be the same as you in their private life and traditions. In real life I have NEVER once had a conversation with someone outside of my household about how we do and don't wrap presents, people that know me literally do not know because its not a normal chat to come up.

These are some traditional Christmas photo of Santa delivering gifts. Certainly not new or 'odd' to have them unwrapped.

Good point

Oh I definitely wouldn’t wrap something like a bike! I’d cover that with something

but always wrap actual gifts. I sometimes pop something unwrapped in a gift bag to ‘switch things up a bit 🤣’ but I’ll tape the gift bag closed

in really surprised at just how many people don’t wrap tbh

I always wrap all presents for children, mine and anyone else's! As for children the suspense and excitement of the unwrapping is really exciting.

I also wrap for my husband and my mum. However this year i have cut back on wrapping all other adults (Just bung them in a gift bag and tape it shut) call it lazy but I really can't be bothered....some of the shapes are so faffy and I always get frustrated as they never look neat anyway.

I guess its more environmentally friendly too as the gift bags can be reused!

I always wrap! If it's a big piece in good state, then the wrapping paper gets reused next year. Recycled paper that can be recycled again isn't anything like as bad for the environment as the gift it surrounds in the huge majority of timed.

My parents never wrapped anything when I was a child from father christmas. It was magical all the toys and games just left out on settees for us to play with. We'd be playing buckaroo by 8am! I wrap my children's but for my family I have one christmas bag. After dinner they sit there I bring one persons present out in the bag. They take it out. Then I take the same bag back out of room put next pressie in for next person etc...so much less wrapping and more environmentally friendly. I can relax and enjoy my Christmas eve with a glass of wine!

My MIL! When I first met my husband nearly 30 years ago I was gobsmacked that they received their presents that way!
