I was chatting to someone at work and she casually revealed that she never wraps any Christmas presents for her kids. Or in fact, anyone.

just pops everything under the tree or in a pile and that’s it. Jobs a good un.

She couldn’t explain why really - just said she’d always done it that way so I’m turning to MN to ask … do you do this? And if so, why?

I'd feel miserable doing that, even though I dislike wrapping every year. It just seems really dull.

Sartre · 14/12/2025 12:35

I hate wrapping but recognise unwrapping a gift is part of the magic so there’s no way I wouldn’t wrap my DC’s presents! I don’t wrap gifts for other people though, I use gift bags.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/12/2025 12:39

I like wrapping things up.

I even wrapped up the logs in the log basket once, to make them more festive!

Owly11 · 14/12/2025 12:39

We do as many reusable bags as possible now but still have the occasional wrapped gift.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 14/12/2025 12:43

I don't wrap. DS takes the full 12 days of christmas to unwrap presents and he just doesn't recognise that there is something behind the paper for him. He just looks at them and thinks wow, what a lot of colourful boxes, anyway...

I do try and dress it up a bit though, this year I got a cardboard train thing so they look christmassy, but are still visible and unwrapped.

As for grown up presents, I don't usually wrap them either, it's a gift bag with some crepe paper to jazz it up.

Sellotape isn’t recyclable though so If that goes into the bin you’ve fucked the recycling part

We buy plastic-free paper tape. Like masking tape but brown, which blends into kraft wrapping paper as well as clear sellotape would. Can go in recycling or compost!

BunnyLake · 14/12/2025 12:59

Adopting the Asian method of wrapping presents in reusable fabric seems like a nice option (for bigger presents). I agree there is a lot waste but unwrapping is part of the fun. I try and keep the paper for the following year as much as I can (no young children tearing it to shreds).

Apparently called Furoshiki - Japanese wrapping cloth.

HouseAshamed · 14/12/2025 13:04

As a child, Father Christmas but things in a sack unwrapped.

I wrap presents in clean newspaper, free newspapers in a foreign language if I can find them. It looks better than it sounds. It's also easy to recycle.

HouseAshamed · 14/12/2025 13:07

Furoshiki is a bit weird though. Do you use fancy fabric? What is the recipient meant to do with it?

Quickqueensquirrel · 14/12/2025 13:16

Yep we've always done this too, from when I was little to now with our DCs.
Same with my DH who grew up in Europe, one of many children in his family.

Santa doesn't wrap presents they come out of a sack!
Wrapping paper is unnecessary, wasteful, and costly to the giver and most of all, to the environment.

They keep it and reuse it. It's really popular. They use it for everything from gifts to wrapping bento boxes for lunch. The patterns can either be for fun or can be symbolic. It is usually tied in a specific way to allow for carrying.

I have bought a few satin squares off vinted, usually from Lush gift sets that people have used and I do use these to wrap some smaller presents like for my mum or my brother, and my mum sews them into different craft projects when she's done with them.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 14/12/2025 13:30

For anybody interested in Furoshiki wrapping.

I don’t personally wrap anything because it’s husbands job. We do have wrapped presents though so different from most of the posters here.

TwilightAb · 14/12/2025 13:32

My in laws usually pass over a plastic bag with the presents in, they even leave the price tag on.

Kazzaa46 · 14/12/2025 13:33

I bought those draw string wrapping bags this year and they have been a game changer, no cutting or sellotape etc
They’re really thick so I plan to keep them and re use them next year.

However someone did say to me that it’ll take the fun out of tearing open the present so now I’m thinking about that!
They do look much more appealing than my usual wrapping though, as they usually looks like they were wrapped by a blind T-Rex 😆

Molly499 · 14/12/2025 13:39

What a shame not to wrap presents, I think it's part of the joy and make a huge effort to make presents look beautiful.

TheSandgroper · 14/12/2025 13:42

I made cotton drawstring bags about 25 years ago. I washed them last year . l thought they deserved a cleanup. Family only and I get them back once opened. I have also made for my parents and my brothers. Cloth baggies are a big hit in this house,

They do look good, are good environmentally and make wrapping the easiest thing in the world.

Father Christmas presents would get wrapped in paper, though. But we’re over that stage now.

take10yearsofmylife · 14/12/2025 13:43

I hate wrapping gifts, I hate all those wrapping papers left behind. Gift bags are godsend, I reuse them whenever possible, I dont write on the tags so others can reuse them too.

SergeantWrinkles · 14/12/2025 13:53

I love wrapping. I use recycled, recyclable paper and paper wrapping tape that is also biodegradable. I think unwrapping is part of the fun.

Isobel201 · 14/12/2025 14:09

I don't wrap, but I arrange gift bags so they are hiding the object well. My mum still does individual wrapping in our sacks, but they're not bothered about how they receive my gifts to them.

Focusispower · 14/12/2025 14:15

We wrap but a couple of years ago both kids had a second hand present - Sylvanians for DD and Brio for DS. We set them up around the tree and actually it was brilliant - looked great, ready to play, more enjoyed than the dopamine hit of unwrapping. I think having one thing set up already is really helpful with small kids.

MarbleDrive · 14/12/2025 14:17

We are competitive wrappers in my family. I’m almost embarrassed to say what goes on

Denim4ever · 14/12/2025 14:23

We reuse gift bags until they fall apart. It's a kind of eco conscious thing now, but it's first iteration was because I can identify things from the wrapped shape very easily.

We never had stockings as children and our tree was a table top tinsel thing. Santa delivered to my room, I saw him once, looked just like my Dad 🤣

Wow- how many presents does he get?

MummytoBoth · 14/12/2025 14:26

RollyPollyBatFace · 14/12/2025 11:22

So it would appear that people do this because it’s how it was done when they were a child? Makes sense

I never had a stocking as a child. Just a pile of (wrapped!) presents so for many years I didn’t do a stocking for my kids. I do one now but I pop it by their presents and it’s filled with whatever fits in it best - so there’ll be AirPods in amongst a bag of chocolate coins for example … so I’ve probably still not got the hang of it after many years!

You do the exact same thing as me x
