Hot Chocolate fetish

What’s with hot chocolate being some sort of exotic drink only consumed at Christmas, or on Christmas Eve?
It is basically cocoa sugar and milk and easily available any day of the year. Why make such a song and dance about it? It is not exactly the elixir of the gods.
If you are that keen on it why do you have to snuggle on the sofa to drink it? Why not just stand around glugging it in the kitchen whenever you fancy some?

In this economy?

Sorry - is there something wrong with having hot chocolate at Christmas? At making a nice warm cup of hot sweet tasty goodness when it’s cold outside and you want to make an event of snuggling on the sofa?

Many people have hot chocolates yearly, otherwise I would assume they wouldn’t be so readily available in every supermarket year round. So I think you’re being a bit ridiculous. Let people enjoy their treats regardless of why day it is.

I guess that’s the thing, I don’t see it as an event, I mean it lasts a few mins, I see it no more an event than a cup of tea of coffee. I appreciate people are making it with real chocolate, whipped Cream etc, but it’s still 5 mins and done. An event for me is something way bigger. I’ve never seen my evening having been an event as I had a hot chocolate, but I can see some folks do.

pambeesleyhalpert · 11/12/2025 16:04

I don’t really like hot chocolate but I WILL drink it on Xmas eve snuggled on the sofa. It’s tradition!

Xmasdemon · 11/12/2025 16:04

I'm having an eventful evening with a hot chocolate right now @Daisywhatsyouranswer

Timebudda · 11/12/2025 16:09

Ive not had any chocolates or chocolate drinks or any thing with coco in it for 3 years.

How i loved a hot chocolate with a chocolate spoon, whipped cream chocolate sprinkles and marshmallows.
Then a chocolate penguin nip each corner off and use it as a straw.

I hate you all.😀

It’s not just the hot chocolate though ? It’s the general vibe.

It’s just a vibe. It’s a cute, cosy, special treat kind of vibe. Making small moments into special moments is actually an important life skill to learn in order to be happy. It doesn’t matter if you glug yours down in five minutes. It matters if you enjoyed holding your cup and smelling the chocolate and getting whipped cream on your nose when you take the first sip.

It’s nice.

Chocolate penguin straw? Have you just changed my life?

I don't understand it either. People who drink it always use words like 'huddled', 'cosy', 'treat'.....
Its just a drink, a child's drink at that, available every day of the year.
One of my kids will order it in a coffee shop with cream, marshmallows and chocolate flakes on top.

It isn't any different to having a cup of tea though. Apart from piling loads of shite into it to make it a child's drink.
Its comparable to getting an ice cream and shoving three toppings on it - again like a child would.
People don't exclaim enthusiastically getting an ice cream. Well most adults don't anyway.

VikingLady · 11/12/2025 16:35

Life is grim these days. If something gives someone a degree of joy and doesn’t harm anyone else then they should go for it.

We're on limited treats (kid has blood sugar issues before anyone feels the need to kindly inform me that I'm setting them up for a lifetime of gluttonous disordered eating) so hot chocolate counts as a treat here. Fancy mugs, mini marshmallows, a square of chocolate to dip in it and schluck the melty bits off, and cream in mine in lieu of half the sugar. Why not?

I mean, why make a fuss of birthdays? It’s just another day, after all. Why wrap presents? Why have popcorn in the cinema? Why dress up for the theatre? Because life can be fucking awful and we need to manufacture some joy!

You sound like you hang out with very boring adults.

I have a tea pot and me and DH like making our tea pot on a tray and sharing it together from smaller cups. This is aside from the usual every day cup of tea, because it wouldn’t be very efficient to do it every day. However it’s nice and we like to do it and we talk over our shared pot of tea. A lovely little event we share together on occasion.

How is this different to making an extra delicious hot chocolate on a cold winter night and snuggling up to enjoy it?

You don’t sound like you enjoy very much. Not unless it’s a big event or terribly grown up, anyway.

You’re probably right. I don’t get excited by hot drinks. I know one adult who does but while she is very nice, she’s quite dull and everything is a big deal for her.

I think it’s less about getting excited by the drink and more fully enjoying the moment. Most people don’t drink hot chocolate in the summer. Lots of people save it as a Christmas treat. Why shouldn’t they get excited about it? Grown adults get excited about their favourite parts of Christmas dinner. They get excited to do the crackers and wear the hats. Like where do you draw the line at what is acceptable for people to enjoy and what is just “not exciting.”

On its own these things aren’t special but they are made special by the enjoyment, the ritual, the rarity and the company shared when we indulge in them. There’s no sin in loving life too much.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 11/12/2025 17:02

I love my twinnings hot chocolate every night at bedtime, even in summer 😀

I’d rather live a life where lots of things bring me joy, big or small, than one where very little brings me joy (not hot chocolate though, I don’t actually like hot chocolate. Or tea 😬)

PistachioTiramisu · 11/12/2025 17:05

Horrible, horrible stuff! Sickly sweet and too rich - and the additions just make it worse!

i don’t know one adult who gets excited about Christmas crackers or paper hats.

Not a single one.

I genuinely have never met one adult excited at the thought of any of this things. Honestly.

And snuggling, lots of snuggling it seems with hot chocolate going on in mumsnetters homes. Excited snuggling.

Are you this miserable about everything?

Like there's nothing special at all?

After all, birthday cake, not special, you can put a candle in cake and blow it out any day, so presumably you don't bother doing this for your kids ...and obviously you don't even give them presents or anything on Christmas Day, because you can do that any day of the year...

How are you comparing a birthday, literally one date a year with a hot drink.
Perspective please hot choc drinkers!!!

What a joyless life some people lead. I feel so lucky I can see the joy in the little things in life, my world is so much better for it!

Can’t even beleive this poster has said if you don’t think hot chocolate is special you obviously don’t gift your children on their birthdays.
