Any minor Festive Fuck-ups yet?

Someone <ahem> decided to go and buy new lights for their 6.5ft really bushy Christmas tree today...and they decided 1000, on a 10m cable, from The Range, is plenty for this tree (bear in mind, their old ones are 600 on a 22m cable).

Dear Reader...

10m of lights, no matter how many are crammed onto it, are certainly not enough for a giant tree. They just about cover it's bottom half...if they're spaced very far apart <sigh>.

And I can't even couple them together because I lose the white and blue from the new set if I do that, and they don't quite sync properly <BIG SIGH>! So now I either put old on back/new on front, slightly out of sync OR I bus back to The Range to once again browse their many and varied aisles of festive lights 🤔 (I cba to bus back tomorrow & really want to decorate by the way).

My dad offered a sensible solution - he will collect 2000 warm white lights, in the morning, when he goes for garden centre cafe breakfast. But they're white. Not coloured. And might not even be enough! I need about 3bazillion metres looking at this!

Kind of the other way round - after doing what you did one year I bought a set extra long cluster lights. They go around my 6.5ft tree twice and are so bright I swear they distract aircraft heading to Heathrow and Gatwick and we’ll find one trying to land outside one day 🤣

I have eaten the chocolate coins already.

Happens every fucking year...

And me ;)

Did some very minor DIY last Thursday and managed to get Araldite all over the tip of the finger I use for touch-ID on my laptop. Made the Christmas online shopping over the weekend a right pain in the arse, as I must have typed my password in about 11,000 times.

I’ve done this before, you can remove superglue (or paint or anything else that doesn’t wash off) with a nail file - literally file it off to reveal smooth skin!! 😊

ImFineItsAllFine · 02/12/2025 13:10

I've hidden some of DCs presents too well and currently can't find them 😬

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 02/12/2025 13:16

Apparently DH has spent £350 on my Christmas gift (completely ignoring our budget of £150) and realized after he paid that "it's not what he thought it was and I might not actually like it after all" but it's non-refundable so I'll just have to grin and bear it. I'm trying not to think about it (or what I'd much rather do with the money).

Dliplop · 02/12/2025 13:19

I opened an email in front of DS3 and it was a shipping notification for some clothes- but it had pictures of them! So that’ll be from me not Santa

Knowing my luck it'll take my fingerprint off as well 😁

I’ve been in the loft searching in vain for a garland and assorted picks and trimmings that we’ve had for years. DH thinks he remembers me saying it was time to get new ones and chucking the lot out. I probably thought I’d get some in the sales but obviously forgot all about it. Cannot be arsed to trawl around looking for replacements now.

*I've eaten a large pack of nuts that were meant to be for Christmas.

*Bought a gift and realised they won't use it. I could return it but it's already wrapped. For some reason it feels weird to unwrap it....

*An anticipated FF. I put my Christmas tree up last week. I couldn't wait any longer 😂However, I'm getting carpets fitted next week and will have to try to move it without all the stuff falling off.

*I didn't like my first go at the tree, so I did it again. I have form for this. Last year it took four attempts (and a new tree) before I was happy.

*I made up a hamper but it doesn't look right. I've put a bag over it. Hopefully the mind worm telling me to rip it apart and start again will forget about it.😁

Latenightreader · 02/12/2025 15:03

I have managed to eat the box of Lindor chocolates I bought for my daughter. Twice.

The place where the tree needs to go is a mess and needs an awful lot of stuff clearing before it will fit. This was supposed to have been done over the last couple of months...

SeaToSki · 02/12/2025 15:30

Im ill in bed and have been randomly scrolling and ordering presents online without putting it all in my usual spreadsheet as I dont have the energy. I know when I have to pull my finger out and get properly organized I am going to find out I have way more for one dc than the others, but I cant bring myself to sort it out right now….so its a potential fuck up at the moment rather than an actual one!

lucysmam · 02/12/2025 15:40

@MYOB12 I wish I'd spent break time MN-ing now, rather than going for a wee & making several coffees (school)...I could have nipped into town & back this afternoon & found another use for the short lights 🤔.

Maybe I'll pick some up tomorrow since I was planning to go then anyway to finish dd1's present shopping.

These have all given me a giggle, thanks for sharing 🤣.

The chocolate coins also been eaten here as well as a selection box, you would think after 25 years of buying them for dc I might have learned but no every year....

Rocketpants50 · 02/12/2025 15:49

A few years back our dog ate all the advent calendars about 5 days in - just late enough for the shops to be out of them. DD sat there and calculated how much 'chocolate' was actually in the Cadburys advent calendar and decided the dog wasn't going to die as they hardly contained any at all so no vet needed and he was as predicted absolutely fine. This year I forgot to buy any.

cocktails4two · 02/12/2025 15:51

Forgot to return the order form for the ‘beautiful’ Christmas card and tea towel design DD made in school to buy. Paid on the school app and selected what I wanted, how was I to know you also had to return the paper order form too!? I really need to read the emails from the school better. Felt awful when all the kids come out with theirs 🙁

It's ok Pancake, you're among friends.

I'm ashamed to admit this but not all of the candy canes made it to my tree.😳

NotEvenWildHorsesCould · 02/12/2025 15:53

Justploddingonandon · 02/12/2025 11:37

I've just realised that I have totally forgotten to buy the kids Christmas jumpers and there's sod all left in the local shops. Not only that but I cannot find their ones from last year anywhere (they haven't grown much, they'd probably be fine if I could find them!)

If you can’t find them, try a charity shop.
At least it won’t cost you a fortune, and the charity will benefit 🤣

I think the only sensible approach is to buy things you don't like. I accidently bought white chocolate coins last year, bleugh. They rang in the New Year. Unheard of for Christmas chocs to be around that long 😁

Surely if you paid for it you'll get it? Have you contacted the company?

ForLoveNotMoney · 02/12/2025 16:10

We have all eaten the kids advent chocolate 😂😂

Step daughter wants a guitar for Christmas. She already plays multiple instruments so husband asked her to research it whilst he did the same. Step daughter sent a link and it was the same model husband had found. Perfect, he ordered it.

it came and it’s a tiny kids size, not adults 😂😂😂 Thankfully they have accepted a return but it was funny!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/12/2025 16:21

Fairly minor in the great scheme of things, but I spent goodness how many countless hours knitting a Nativity set for the Gdcs’ (C of E) school 🎄raffle. I’ve made a couple before for the same fundraiser, they’ve always gone down well.

So it hadn’t occurred to me, but they aren’t having a Christmas raffle this year! Only a tombola, and I certainly wasn’t donating it for that.
However it was offered to the youngest Gdc’s teacher for the Y1 classroom, and it was gratefully received.

Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey! That’s an exceptional bit of crafting. I’m envious.

Thank you! However the pattern is superb, meticulously clear instructions, and it was designed (by Jean Greenhowe) so that anyone with fairly basic knitting skills can make it. But it does take absolutely ages! And a LOT of different colours of yarn, so the cost adds up, too.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/12/2025 17:01

I don't know if this counts, but by 'Mumsnet' putting a Christmas Hat on the 'm' at the top of the screen, it gives the appearance as being part the old 'Tesco Value' brand.

(Might just be me...)
