Do you use foil trays to save washing up? Beware Asda prices!

I know they are not very environmentally friendly but the flip side is that you save hot water and time. The other week in my local Asda I could buy 4 foil trays for £1.49 in the home section but downstairs the same trays were £2.38 for 2 (just because they had a Christmas label and were next to the turkeys). I get the impression that Asda wants to offer the best prices but this feels like a scam in plain sight. Does anyone have an email for customer services?

No I don’t. Have enough roasting trays and they just go in the dishwasher

SeaAndStars · 29/11/2025 17:30

I line my baking and roasting tins with greaseproof paper. Makes washing up easier, is cheaper and I hope more environmentally friendly. I've also had a foil one bend and spill fat all over the floor once and am not going through that cleaning/slippery floor hell again.

To answer your question OP, yep, that looks a complete rip off.

CoastalCalm · 29/11/2025 17:37

Only ever use them if I cater Christmas Day , to save hassle I do sometimes line roasting tins with good quality (Lakeland) foil though

Yamamm · 29/11/2025 17:39

Thanks for reminding me to pick some up. Only use them at Christmas and they’re very useful. That 1.49 is incredibly cheap!

Hiptothisjive · 29/11/2025 17:40

Due to your clear lack of environmental consideration I’m glad Asda has put up their prices. No way you are using over two pounds of water to wash a few trays. YABVU

Luckyingame · 29/11/2025 17:55

Yes, every time. I hate dealing with food preparation.
But, I don't shop at Asda.

LifeBeginsToday · 29/11/2025 18:04

Why would you tell customer services that their Christmas themed items are more expensive than regular items?

Because they make claims to be the cheapest supermarket and selling the same item for two completely different prices seems a rip offf especially at this time of year.

Even if I used them I'd still have to wash them up for recycling so I'm not sure what the point is.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/11/2025 18:33

I agree with you, @Topaz67 - it does look like a total rip-off!

And yes, I do know that foil trays aren’t very environmentally aware, but I do use them for roasting the goose at Christmas - partly because I don’t have a tray that is long enough, and partly to save a bit of work on Christmas Day.

I wouldn’t use them all the time, but I don’t think using them once a year is the end of the world.

Andonthatbombshell · 29/11/2025 18:36

Never.
Asda isn't cheap. I pop in every so often for a couple of bits and they seem to have limited own brand items.

It will be the same for other products that have a snowman, or Santa on the label, such as nuts, biscuits, etc, and all the supermarkets do this.

Oblomov25 · 30/11/2025 16:45

I've actually used them for Christmas in the past and find them brilliant. Reminds myself to buy a couple more this week.

GinkoRebelFoxes · 30/11/2025 18:37

I re-use trays that have come from other meals (if I buy a ready made pie, or similar) but I don’t buy new ones. I line all my roasting tins with baking paper, like one of the previous posters. It makes washing up easy, and is fairly environmentally friendly.

Tryingatleast · 30/11/2025 18:41

Selling so many of these at the moment (I work in a supermarket). First year have seen so many and I honestly think it’s another sign the planet is going down the toilet. Just wash your oven dishes!!!

gogomomo2 · 30/11/2025 18:44

No I use reusable, so environmentally wasteful

purplecorkheart · 30/11/2025 18:57

No, I feel that they may not be solid enough so end up putting them on a baking tray which I would end up.washing anyway so easier to use a roasting dish. Also not sure how the foil tray would work on hob when deglazing to make gravy.

Lifestooshort71 · 30/11/2025 18:59

I use them regularly for roast pots or fish fingers/chips etc. I don't have a dishwasher and scrunch them up tightly to keep the grease contained. I also use non-stick tinfoil if I have to use a proper tin and ready-cut paper circles for cake tins. My personal conditions mean the above help me to cook food from scratch rather than use pre-prepped meals and, for the same reasons I struggle with recycling. Hang me from a gibbet if it makes you feel better. Oh and it doesn't bother me about Asda as I don't shop there.

3678194b · 30/11/2025 19:07

Oh no I saw them, the £2 ones, yesterday and bought them! But it'd cost more to drive back there!

OriginalUsername2 · 30/11/2025 19:15

Good catch!

timetogetlost · 30/11/2025 19:26

Don't they still need washing up before going in recycling? I have bought them before, but only when catering for many and I ran out of trays. I still washed them up.

I don't think they claim every item sold is cheaper than elsewhere. Also, I'm not sure the customer service person who picks up your email has anything to finish pricing so why bother emailing?

caringcarer · 30/11/2025 21:07

I only use them on Xmas day and possibly NY day if I host. I get a much deeper one and already got it at B&M.

NunsOnTheRum · 30/11/2025 22:19

I used to use them at parties until I hosted a guest of DH’s who was a Dr and told me he believed they were very unhealthy because they are coated in a teflon like substance, sorry I can’t remember the name, and there are concerns it is carcinogenic

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/11/2025 22:22

Asda are a steaming pile of shite! Considering ditching them completely 😒😒😒
