Hi, has anyone found any vintage / retro Christmas lights that glow i.e. not harsh lights? Preferably coloured.

I looked for many years for the "twinkling" lights of the late 1980s/90s and finally found a good compromise in the shape of modern "firefly" lights. Not exactly the same but as good as I could get. Apparently the old ones were in contradiction of EU safety laws.

I might try colouring lights with Sharpies

I’ve painted mine with acrylic paint. I know it sounds mad but they look great now.

Just bought these with nice discount. Thankyou

You don't want leds if you want a vintage hue. You need incandescent bulbs.

The ones linked have a vintage style but they'll still be a harsh light.

Edited to add, yes, I realize they're banned for new manufacturing. I buy them off Facebook marketplace.

@/mellymaysworld (ignore the slash) on instagram was on the hunt for some and found some gorgeous incandescent ones for proper retro xmas vibes - she posted a link too xxx

The Sharpies are pretty effective

I’ve done the Sharpie thing before…just be warned that the heat seems to wear away the colour after a while so they’ll need a touch-up each year.

Also the red never seems to work, it has always looked orange to me.

I bought some Noma ones this year Smile they’re lovely.

As promised, here are my vintage lights complete with box.
They go up round the dresser in our dining room rather than on the tree these days.

Gorgeous @TeenToTwenties

I did sharpies. I'm quite pleased with it but after years of moaning about the hard led blues I am finding that the sharpie blue hasn't come out very well. Also agree with someone else earlier that modern lights twinkle too quickly!
