Hi, has anyone found any vintage / retro Christmas lights that glow i.e. not harsh lights? Preferably coloured.

I bought some a few years ago but I just can't remember where from. I remember looking for ages and I was really pleased with them in the end. Every year I get them out I hope they are still working as I like them so much. I think I got them from soewhere like Argos and picked them based on the words retro and vintage. They give a really soft light with the pinks and blues really not harsh at all . I am not sure if you can tell from the photo as it is a bit out of focus but the lights are really soft. The pink and blues really remind me of the lights on my childood trees (in the late 70s and early 80s). Those vintage one linked to earlier look quite similar

Saw some in Sainsbury’s yesterday, Habitat ones. Pickwick?

Ooh those are lovely!

I've found that none of the LED ones can achieve the soft glow of filament bulbs. The closest I have got is Twinkly smart bulbs, but they are expensive.

They are still packed away. If it remember (which i may well not) in 2-3 weeks then I will post.

I think it’s the bulb, try incandescent rather than led

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 27/11/2025 19:56

Another vote for the Pickwick ones - they are like the fairy lights you used to be able to get from Woolworths.

I wish I still had our old vintage lights from my childhood, but they would probably be seriously dodgy borderline antique by now. My parents chucked them out in the late 1970's when we moved house and bought safe new ones.😥

I love fairy lights, so am enjoying this thread

blackfriday1 · 27/11/2025 20:40

Feeling all the nostalgia with these lights!

They're definitely like the ones I remember from the 70s❤️🙏

Saz12 · 27/11/2025 21:53

I bought genuine 1970's lights from Ebay, the same design as in my childhood. I only switch them on if I'm in the same room, much like you'd treat a candle.

You could get them pat tested to be doubly sure.
I remember helping check every bulb before they went up.👍😁

The led colour ones that are same design as 80s ones are so bright,I bought some few years ago,I wasn't happy with them.,not the same feel and glow at all. .I, like a previous poster got some originals from Ebay, and like them, only have them on if I'm in the room!! Just to be safe

Panda69 · 27/11/2025 22:11

This year I have bought some red lights, that also have some warm white light on it which go on and off,but red ones are static.from very,or freemans. ..I also have some fire fly ones from wayfair, which are an amber colour and every fourth or fifth bulb flickers at steady speed. Both sets there's a bit of movement without being a disco!..a pet hate of mine, love a twinkle, but all twonle settings on lights speed up,why!!!!
