DH just asking for practical stuff, anyone else?

DH wants… pans for Christmas, new plates and a salt and pepper grinder. That’s it. Is anyone else’s DH like this? We could afford new ones easily but he insists that this is what he wants 🫤

My mum bought me a really good set of pans for Christmas one year. I wanted them and that was what I asked for. I think of that Christmas morning almost every time I use them with such fondness and gratitude. I can't remember any novelty or fun gift I've received over the years.

Bungle2168 · 26/11/2025 22:39

Has he got any fish to fry in the new year, or is he hoping things will just pan out well?

Coffeeishot · 26/11/2025 22:40

I mean pans if he likes to cook and they are fancy pans great ,but surely plates everyone will eat off them that just a house essential ?

Coffeeishot · 26/11/2025 22:42

Sorry to answer your question i.have bought DH tools and a soldering iron in the past yes.

Gowlett · 26/11/2025 22:46

Ottolenghi recommends nice pans as a present in the Guardian Christmas Gift Guide. For the foodies, y’know…

Pipsquiggle · 27/11/2025 07:40

I bloody love stuff like kitchenware as Christmas presents.

In the past my DH has asked for practical stuff. It's great, it's what they want and will get used

I bought pans with my christmas money last year. They give me a little joy everyday when im cooking dinner.

That said, i was quite specific with what I wanted. Just generic pans wouldn't have been the same!

Enko · 27/11/2025 07:46

Dd age 24 had asked for a good frying pan

She wrote in our family group chat.
"I know I am an adult now as I have put a frying pan on my christmas list"

Hadalifeonce · 27/11/2025 07:48

If I want practical stuff, I ask for it for Christmas, and I am very happy to receive it, just as happy if I had wanted some perfume or fancy underwear.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/11/2025 07:48

My mum one year asked for a plastic dust bin...

We do like practical presents in our family but that was taking it a bit far.

Notmyreality · 27/11/2025 07:54

What is the issue with buying practical presents? Better than getting tat that won’t get used and fills up space until it gets chucked.

OverNotOver · 27/11/2025 07:58

It took me a while to realise that all DH wants for Christmas or his birthday is exactly what he’s asked for. Usually that’s practical, sometimes it’s fanciful.

Just get him what he’s asked for, why think about it any more?

OopOop · 27/11/2025 08:03

DH has also asked for a set of pans for Christmas, he wants some HexClad ones. He does all the cooking and they’d feel like a treat to him so I’m not arguing!

TheNightingalesStarling · 27/11/2025 08:06

DH has asked for (and chose himself) a camping bed, some new camping pans and dash cams. In previous years its been things like new mirrors for his motorbike or a new tent. He buys it, I wrap it.

calminggreen · 27/11/2025 08:07

I’m a single parent in my 40s - my dad every year buys me power tools - I love it - it’s sort of our thing now and he spends a lot of time looking into new products or accessories which might be useful (he works in construction) and they are useful presents as they are expensive and not something I could afford to buy on a whim if something suddenly needed doing in the house (and he lives 5 hours away so I can’t pop round and borrow his) - decent drill, jigsaw, multi tool etc

practical presents are great!

frozendaisy · 27/11/2025 08:30

Me and H would rather not bother with presents at all but the teenagers look crestfallen if we don't have a (small/practical) present from each other to each other and from them to us to open.

They just want all the family to get a present at Christmas not just them (just them is what birthdays are for).

So we get each other stuff that we need, shower gel say, but we get slightly fancier stuff that we wouldn't buy with the household shop. Or a book, or a pan, or an electric screwdriver. Or the bottle of champagne that would be on the Christmas table anyway. We just wrap something up basically.

Your Dad sounds brilliant. See these are genuinely thoughtful presents, far more than perfume or makeup or anything ephemeral. In 30 years time, you'll need to fix something in the house and your Dad will be with you.

IBorAlevels · 27/11/2025 08:39

Most men do this, don't they? Every man I met hates Christmas apparently because everyone buys tat that isn't useful.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 27/11/2025 08:47

Previous presents for me, birthday and Christmas have been JL saucepans (28 years old and counting) dinner service, a piece of furniture, garden tools including a lawn mower (I do the gardening) - all of which I wanted and specifically asked for and now enjoy using. DH loves workshop tools and surely it is about making the recipient happy and not loading them with items that go off to the charity shop within days. I get the more usual items too.

Edenmum2 · 27/11/2025 08:49

Mine wants a water distiller. I’m dying of boredom just looking at them

Myblueclematis · 27/11/2025 08:58

One Christmas a long time ago, my brother bought me a complete tool kit in a large bag. I did use some items from it but a lot of the stuff was for more professional builders/tradesmen to use. He also bought me a rechargeable screw driver another year and that has been very useful as having arthriticy hands makes using a manual screwdriver really painful.

I also asked him one year to buy me multiple bags of compost/farmyard manure which he did, I was thrilled, they lasted me pretty much throughout the year.

VenusClapTrap · 27/11/2025 09:17

I’m buying DH a set of kitchen knives.

FurbieFan · 27/11/2025 10:40

Me me me!!! I’m like this and so is dh. I love practical gifts, things that I’ll use and get real value from. I get squirmy when I’m bought another bit of jewellery (who needs more than once necklace?!) or even worse a pair of luxury pjs.

I want things I can use and consume. Spoil me with gardening kit, kitchen consumables and a sturdy pair of gloves!

GingerFox2021 · 27/11/2025 12:18

The stuff he asked is perfectly normal. I love practical gifts, they are best for me,
