DH just asking for practical stuff, anyone else?

DH wants… pans for Christmas, new plates and a salt and pepper grinder. That’s it. Is anyone else’s DH like this? We could afford new ones easily but he insists that this is what he wants 🫤

One of my favourite gifts was a set of Global kitchen knives from OH. They'll last longer than me!
MIL was horrified. She hates that I like practical gifts but I think my message has got through that I hate waste and I'd rather have what I ask for than some frivolous wasteful gift just so it's a surprise.

Get nicer versions than you normally would and they'll be something that gives him joy every day for years

Mslak · 28/11/2025 18:13

I’d agree with him. Christmas is just stupid these days.

My DH and I often ask for practical presents. This year his list includes a rechargeable torch and mine includes a miniature iron for sewing. And every time I use that iron I'll think about how much I appreciate DH buying me something I appreciate and will use.

What is the issue with buying practical presents? Better than getting tat that won’t get used and fills up space until it gets chucked.

It doesn’t have to be the extremes of practical or tat, there are things in between the two on my list.

Please give him what he’s asked for.. that’s the whole actual point.

Well me and DH and DD are all practical stuff people

what one earth is wrong with that?

Myblueclematis · 29/11/2025 08:11

I think practical presents are good if you either asked for it or you are someone who prefers practical to personal.

Personally, I am happy for practical if I've requested it which I have done sometimes. In the past I've received a pressure cooker, slow cooker, set of chef knives and a juice presser, none of which I asked for.

The pressure cooker and slow cooker were really useful and used all the time but the knives and juice presser not so much. The presser was given away, and the knives have virtually never been used and still in their packing.

that sounds like a lovely present if he does a lot of the cooking, a suspicious one if he doesn't!!!

It’s fine if you want and ask for a practical gift

but how many threads have there been over the years (I’ve been on mn maybe 20yrs) and people gutted or pissed off that dh got them a kitchen bin or an iron etc for birthday or Christmas

and they wanted something for them. Not the house

everyone is diff
