5 yo toy that does something

I’m looking for a Christmas present for my five year old. She is so jealous of all the toys that do things that her brother gets and she wants something fun, that she doesn’t have to animate, or craft, or invent.

What are some good ideas for her?

Fwiw I hate plastic tat, but I think maybe this is what she wants!

I like fingerlings, they are quite cheap now and they are small but they make different noises/actions depending on how you move them.

Blindell · 25/11/2025 14:32

@user946372 ive never heard of these- thanks for the suggestion

Tamogotchi

Wisterical · 25/11/2025 14:34

What toys does her brother get?

Keroppi · 25/11/2025 14:36

Robot dog or cat
Remote control car or animal like those zuru pets
Transformer
Blow pens
Spinny flying thing like those fairies or there's a ball that "hovers" we've had before

Blindell · 25/11/2025 14:37

@Wisterical just things like cars and noisy vehicles, he’s got a noisy dog that sings - he’s younger so some are not age appropriate for her.
Maybe she just wants something noisy

@Keroppi zuru pets is a great idea, thank you. Do these things last a while? I don’t want something that breaks really quickly

This!

This!

I know - it’s hard because I think girls toys are so craft or role play based, but I also think it’s the way he’s so happy lining his cars up and she’s partly jealous of that too. I feel like all her toys require work from her - to think up stories, or put things together. He’s still very little, so his toys are much more simple

Get her Pop Up Pirate!

Wisterical · 25/11/2025 14:45

You could get her a remote controlled car that flashes and makes noises. Fancy marble runs are great fun. Look at magnetic toys too. And generally all the stuff that her brother plays with will be produced for 5 year olds too.

Wisterical · 25/11/2025 14:47

I've just seen your update. THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS GIRLS TOYS.

Why does she need ‘girl toys’? Why can’t she have ‘boy toys’?

I’m not quite sure where you draw this imaginary line. My 6 year old DD is getting a skateboard and a huge science kit - are these girl or boy toys?

Blindell · 25/11/2025 14:54

Oh ffs I know there’s no such thing as girls and boys toys. This is kind of my point of why I’m asking for suggestions and I haven’t labelled the post as I’m looking for girls toys, but that I’m looking for good five year old toys.

My DD loves a remote controlled car, get a pink one if you must, but the girlyness is for you not her. Hate to say it but non of the robot alive pets have lasted very well in our house, we have many sad 3 legged turtles, an out of battery fish and a long forgotten bird. The snake did quite well, but has lost the end of his tail.

My 6yo is currently after a dance mat, which would fufil the noisy requirement, and also has a keyboard she like.

Blindell · 25/11/2025 14:56

i don’t want her to have pink girly toys!! I haven’t said that!!

Thank you for the info on the robotics. Maybe they’re not the way forward.

fwiw I don’t want girl toys or pink - she does happen to be quite interested in stereotypically girly things but this isn’t something I’ve encouraged. I meant it more as a thing of when I’ve googled what would be good, the girly stuff is so craft etc based, so I’m stumped for ideas

Look for a toy for a '5 year old' not a '5 year old girl'.

And not in pink or purple.

Would she be interested in STEM toys? My 5 year old's asked for a coding robot and a metal detector. Learning Resources do some good bits for that age

Strangesally20 · 25/11/2025 15:06

I have a 5 year old girl and 2.5 year old boy so I assume similar age gap for you. I’m going to get them some remote control bumper car things, they come in a pack of two and the whole idea is you race them, so one each and they can race them round the house. They’re from smyths
