Toy ideas for baby who's only obsessed with books!

Pippymcphee · 17/11/2025 09:07

My baby will be 9 months old at Christmas. We aren't buying her too much as she's so young, but we've got her some new books, flash cards, and a little doll.
However, family and friends etc keep asking us what they can buy, and the only interest she has is books. She is book obsessed!
We already have SO many, and we also have a weekly trip to the library.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on toys that might interest a baby who loves books, that aren't books themselves 😅. Maybe your baby has been the same and you have some suggestions?
I would love to find her some toys she's interested in!

TIA

I would probably just ask for stuff she needs for her next stage of development, e.g. something she can push along like a trolley or a push-along walker, as she'll be starting to do that in the next few months. And next size up clothes.

DillyDallyingAllDay · 17/11/2025 09:32

Ask for open ended toys that will last years; duplo/(megablocks too!), magnetic tiles, a doll pushchair, shopping trolley, and play silks that have been firm favourites in our house. My DC are older than yours but they all love books and these toys- they’ve lasted 5+ years and still firm favourites

GrumpySparkler · 17/11/2025 12:54

Agree with Duplo, mega blocks, plastic animals, dolls pram. These will last and be enjoyed by her for years.
I would also highly recommend the leapfrog scoop and learn ice cream cart. My eldest got one for his 1st birthday and we've only just sold it on earlier this year - he's now 7. He's loved it. DS2 loved it (he's 4). Every child that entered our house has loved it. It's really stood the test of time and I even got a bit emotional when it went!

Duplo play books are books with bricks to build something in the book. Might be a good introduction. I’m guessing she has books with a character e.g.Elmer, Spot or related themed toys or with a favoured book character on.
You could always ask for money towards one of those book cases where she can see the front of the books. There are some on Etsy.
When our girls were young their Grandad made them one of those book storage areas. It was like the type you’d have in a library. They loved it.

You're overthinking.

She's a baby.

What she's 'obsessed' with now will change shortly and then change again and again.

Let them buy what makes them happy.

YorkshireIndie · 17/11/2025 13:06

I would ask for stuff for the next stage or clothes? Bath toys? Duplo? Or a Christmas ornament (but not first Christmas ones). I brought both mine a Christmas snow globe that they will take with them when they grow up

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 17/11/2025 14:48

Tonie box

letshavetea · 17/11/2025 15:29

The best bet would be either/and Lanka Kade figures and The Puppet Company puppets. You can match these up with the books and support her imaginative play and language development. Combine them with some containers like bowls and tins and some wooden blocks and that will
support her development very well at this stage.
It’s always best to support children’s interests.

Actually I don't think I'm overreacting. I'd like my baby to have something she actually likes and enjoys for for Christmas, even if it is only for right now.
I am more than happy for people to buy her what they like - that is what I'd prefer. As I stated in my post though, I have family and friends asking me for a list of things.

Thanks for these ideas! Duplo is a great shout 👍🏻☺️

Thank you. So many good ideas. I'll take a look at that ice cream cart, sounds fun!

Yes this is exactly why I made this post. She loves books and I want to get her other things that will support that, without actually being books if that makes sense, just because we have so many already!
We actually have a few of the puppet co stuff and she absolutely loves them - I've got my eye on the Elephant for her for Christmas, and one of my friends mentioned Sleich animals so I'll take a look at those too.

I said overthinking, not overreacting.

If your baby will be 9 months at Christmas, that means she's only 8 months right now and into chewing on/slobbering over books.

By Christmas or just after, it could be absolutely anything else so I wouldn't worry about the particular type of toys.

She'll benefit from being introduced to a whole variety of things.

My mistake.

Actually though she's not interested chewing and slobbering all over them. She wants to spend all her time on my knee listening and looking at them.
So I would really like to support that interest.

Deffo wee book bags with things linked to her favourites or even new books. Like a toy tea set with the tiger who came to tea book…or animal figures of the animals in Dear Zoo book…books storage is also good. Or a bath book!

Bath books! I wouldn't even have thought about those. Thank you

What's wrong with her getting a load of books if that's what she loves? (Genuine question in case it sounds snippy)

WonderingWanda · 17/11/2025 17:41

Montessori busy board
Foam bath stickers
Jigsaws
lots of visualinterest and you can tell a story and move the pieces.

Or to broaden her horizons maybe a music table with lights and sounds. Or a bubble machine, very popular with mine at that age.

Is she mobile yet? If not she soon will be and might love a play tunnel and tent or some sort of ride on.

Ahh ok.

She will when she starts teething, I'm sure!

Perhaps some sensory toys then? Mine used to have a small sort of sheet type thing, with soft/hard/crinkly/squeaky materials for them to feel.

We've already bought her quite a few and at home we have sooo many! We also go to the library every week and we only have space for so many books 😅.
We definitely aren't in need of books, and I'd also really like to find something she enjoys playing with too.

My eldest was 9 months old at Christmas. We got her a trolley with building blocks in, a doll, a tower she could stand up by and push balls down and a sit on ride along thing that she could move around on. I think grandparents got her a swing for the garden. Even though it’s winter, we still made use of it.

my nephew was a similar age last Christmas and we got him a toddler slide. He wasn’t quite able to use it at that point, but by the February he was able to do it independently.

I’d be thinking about the next stage of development, your baby might not be moving at the moment, but it really won’t be long until they are crawling/climbing and it’s always good to have things ready for when they need them. other ideas, a tunnel to crawl through, a little table and chair to sit at, wooden peg jigsaws, Balls to crawl after, cause and effect toys (if they press a button, the toy does something, eg beeps/lights up or similar).

Which toys does she seem interested in at groups you take her to or at nursery if she’s already started? That might give you some ideas.

WhiteJeans7 · 17/11/2025 21:08

Sound puzzles - Melissa and Doug do nice ones, from memory. My DD also loved books, and really enjoyed these puzzles too (under close supervision). I believe they were 18 months+. You could also look at stackable wooden toys like rainbows and the Tomy eggs - DD really enjoyed making the sounds, figuring out the shapes, stacking the shells etc. £6 well spent at the time!
