Ds10 - oculus meta 3, oculus £50 gift card, 10 manga books, wireless headset, ps5 controller, 2 small boxes of lego. Few random small bits like notebook & pens, ps5 controller holder.

ds14 - 2 playstation 5 games, 1 PC game + the dlc pack, 10 dvds hes asked for, 1 book, watch, 2 LED lights. Few small random bits bracelets hes asked for, elastic band gun, robux gift card.

I feel so rubbish, really struggling to afford christmas this year! Do you think this will do? :(
it doesnt look like much at all but ds14 games came to £250 & ds10 oculus was around £300! they havent asked for much but worried they will be dissapointed.

To me that's an absolutely enormous bonkers amount to spend. I genuinely don't understand why there has to be "a lot" of presents, or you have to "fill under the tree". I actually hate the idea of filling the entire space under the tree!!! You can choose to make Christmas about something else, it doesn't have to be about how many presents there are or what space they take up.

I'd honestly just let that idea about masses of presents go, then you won't be in this ridiculous trap of having to spend more each year, especially when you're struggling to afford it.

Mine are adults now, but when young they had it explained that they would all have the same amount of money spent. It was (and still is£100.plus stockings). Each knew that no matter how much bigger or smaller or how many presents the others had, they’d all been treated fairly.
Now the enjoy adding to their lists so that I can choose and will often, nearer the time ask if anything has gone from the list and how much is spare.
Im sorry but three to four hundred is way over the top.

I’m with you OP, we don’t buy during the year so both DS 11 and DS 19 get spoilt a bit at Christmas. We can afford to and before someone has a dig at me they are my children and I’ll buy what I want for them. So far I’ve bought for DS Lego x 2 Meta Quest, FIFA 26, Xbox controller and a guitar that’s trending on tick tock. DD 19 has the LED face mask the cheaper one at £44, a record player and 3 records. I will be buying more though for them both. I’m waiting for the Nintendo lite to be reduced for dd. Finding it so hard for them both this year 😱

They also get matching pjs at Christmas and a Reece selection box each.

Mintyt · 15/11/2025 08:48

If what you’re buying them is something they really would like and have asked for it’s fine. It’s better they get one really really wanted gift than lots to unwrap just to have lots to unwrap

This sounds a bit humblebragging. Is it designed to make those with less money feel bad?

No because OP doesn't have any money, she went without food to buy all those presents

ActYourAge · 15/11/2025 09:10

I think OP is bragging. Pathetic, really

I was asking for opinions. Not bragging. Stop being pathetic by making something this is not.

My original opinion was "well it's her money so whatever" but then you said you went without food in order to save up the money.
So my opinion now is you have spent far too much.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/11/2025 19:32

Yeah same here. The most we ever spent was on a playstation or a laptop.
They always had a lovely assortment of gifts thst they liked but 6- 700 quid?? No way

Then I’m guessing this was a while ago? Just googled and a PS5 is £479.

NorthernEmma · 15/11/2025 10:09

Sounds great! Well done for being so organised too.

And with mine I bulk out the pile with cheaper random stuff too, or essential stuff that I’d end up buying anyway. Like new boxers and socks, toothbrush heads and a mouthwash, a lip balm (even for boys - dry lips in winter), selection box, a few fun packs of sweets from Poundland or wherever, like Toxic Waste. A pack of 6/12 cans of Fanta for their bedroom. Deodorants.

Correct, was around £500+ a few years back so not sure why they are saying its to much when theyve done the same? Laptops & ps5s are expensive.

Even the Tesco hoodie suggested is £18-45. Selection boxes are £7.50 now. So potentially over £600 for those claiming to be frugal, for a shared ps5 and 2 gifts each.
i think you’ve done really well @WeepingAngelInTheTardis

Needmorelego · 15/11/2025 10:26

@Kittkats selection boxes are £1.75 in Iceland 🤔

Yes but if that's what the gift is you shouldn't feel the need to buy anything else.
£20/30 worth of stocking fillers maybe but that's it.
Again it's your money though....so up to you.

Wanderdust · 15/11/2025 10:58

That's a lot! Do you feel people around you give their kids more than this?! That's very expensive!!

Thank you! Was looking at Tesco, but will go Iceland if they’re on offer.

WTF are people "bulking out the pile"???
There doesn't need to BE a pile in the first place
I am not having a go at you @NorthernEmma , its something I have seen plenty of people talking about and posting photos of piles of presents.
Its insane and not only does it push people to get into debt or even not eat to afford it but how can DC appreciate and enjoy their presents when they are facing a pile of them?
I buy 1 main present and then around 2 or 3 smaller ones and the DC get a stocking full of small funny things, we could afford more but its completely unecessary. Its not about how much you spend (although it should only be what you can afford) its about ridiculous over the top consumerism

Riverswims · 15/11/2025 12:44

first present nearly £500? “does this sound rubbish?” It’s either a stealth boast or you really don’t know how most others live? 😶

TwilightAb · 15/11/2025 12:54

Hoppinggreen · 13/11/2025 14:11

I mean the "I am skint but am spending well over £500 on 2 people while freaking out its not enough" nonsense, not Christmas in general.
Its either a humble brag or ridiculous that you think you haven't spent enough, either way just stop it.
Spend what you can afford, don't go into debt and don't compare what you have bought to what other people have.

Yeah its ridiculous! Only mumsnet do you get this whilst in the real world most parents are unable to spend half of that on their children. Get a grip OP.
