Usually go here there and everywhere on Christmas Day so don’t actually do much cooking.

I would like to do something special / a bit different for our Xmas eve dinner, any ideas? What do you usually have?

I could do a take away but would rather cook something nice / get nice food in.

Always something a bit posh and fishy, not too heavy - e.g halibut with sherry braised lentils and creamy watercress sauce or scallops with squid ink risotto

Edited

Sorry all I can think of is Life of Brian - 'this halibut is good enough for Jehovah' 😂. it does sound gorgeous though!

Pork pie and pickled onions. I love it.

Zippidydoodah · 15/10/2025 15:42

Party food (I hate the term “picky bits”! 🤣)

Rudolph Pie.
I make a cottage pie, and stick a large glacé cherry on the top before taking to the table.
It started the year my kids were being little wotsits in the run-up, so I'd threatened "to cancel Christmas". So I served a "reindeer" in pie, complete with red nose. We all have a dark sense of humour, so no long-term trauma! In fact they insist on it every year.

Love this 😂

Salmon en croute and a bought pudding - probably M&S pannacotta. DH is half German so a fairly formal fish dinner is part of his family tradition. We have champagne and small presents off the tree beforehand.

MyOliveCritic · 15/10/2025 16:51

Hot roast pork sandwich in a soft white roll with lashings of apple sauce and some pickled onions!

indoorplantqueen · 15/10/2025 16:52

For the past 6 years we’ve gone to the local Indian restaurant in the village.

We have a chestnut and shredded brussel sprout risotto. It’s a lots nicer than it sounds, the sprouts are added raw at the end so are mustardy and peppery!

That’s sounds sublime. Please share or point to a web link-would love to try. Love sprouts and adore risotto x

@Terriblytweeand @TheJustJoker

These (when pictures are approved) are from BBC Good Food’s Vegetarian Christmas magazine in 2005 - apparently I’ve been eating it for 20 years. I only ever do step 1 as the risotto is already very rich and so coating it and breadcrumbs and frying it butter is massive overkill (I tried it once)!

Thank you!!x

At home with my parents, we always had roast pheasant with all the trimmings, including roast potatoes and bread sauce. Nicer than the Christmas turkey!

Onesipmore · 15/10/2025 18:17

Always do a Nigella ham in coke, with dauphinoise potatoes and green beans after we have been to the village Carol Service. Usually accompanied with a glass of something good. All followed by a Christmas film and a hot chocolate.
On Christmas morning there is a rule that anyone can have whatever they like for breakfast. Its usually a jelly and strawberries dipped in Chocolate for some and a bacon sarnie for us. I do like the idea of warm sausage rolls though !

pokewoman · 15/10/2025 18:17

We go to my mums, and theres 16 of us. My mum phones up the local indian akeaway and orders £100 worth of starters. They know us well (25 years of almost weekley orders!) o we just say give us whatever and rhey always give us way, way.more than what we pay for - nans, poppadoms, bhaji, samosas, pakoras etc- and a tonnes of dips. We just put it all in the kitchen and everyone helps themselves. My mums a keen baker so has usually made her delicious brownies if anyone has space after. Any leftovers from the Indian are put on the Xmas day night and boxing day night buffet

That's sounds like a brilliant evening!!

frockandcrocs · 15/10/2025 18:33

Not sure how we landed on it but our tradition is nachos, with plenty of cheese and pulled chicken and dips. With Home Alone on.

Mardyybum · 15/10/2025 18:33

M&S picky tea here too 😊

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/10/2025 18:34

We have either French dip sandwiches or duck and pancakes. Both random traditions that have developed over the years!

This is exactly what we have! Put it on late morning, go for a big walk, come back starving and it just hits the spot. Also the kids enjoy it too so there's no whinging.

It sounds perfect!

SerafinasGoose · 15/10/2025 19:43

Something cooked slowly: boeuf bourguignon, pot roast or a beef cobbler.

hby9628 · 15/10/2025 19:44

M&S dine in. We always get the pie and chips. 😋

HansHolbein · 15/10/2025 19:56

This year we are having slow cooked beef with mashed potato and vegetables. Rice crispie cake for pudding 😋

dontforgetme · 15/10/2025 20:07

We have a buffet at moms around 4pm, then a Maccies on the way home. Although last year both me and dp came down with noro Christmas Eve and I haven’t had a quarter pounder since…

80smonster · 15/10/2025 20:42

Cold fish platter: trout; gravlax; king prawns; oysters, quail eggs and celery salt, mini leek tartins with feta and honey, baby baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, cheeseboard, crackers and crusty bread. Not much cooking involved.

tillylula · 15/10/2025 20:58
