What’s your fave Xmas eve dinner?

Usually go here there and everywhere on Christmas Day so don’t actually do much cooking.

I would like to do something special / a bit different for our Xmas eve dinner, any ideas? What do you usually have?

I could do a take away but would rather cook something nice / get nice food in.

Cheese, lots of cheese.
Last year we had vol au vonts with creamy mushrooms (tinned soup with extra fresh ones)
Whatever is left in Waitrose Xmas snacks depts when I finish work and manage to drive 25 miles to our closest branch.
Lovely wine and new cocktails

If it's just the three of us we go put for a lovely late lunch somewhere fancy, followed by the pick & mix shop!

If I'm hosting I usually do toad in the hole, spag bol or fish pie. Quite like the smoked salmon & baked alaska idea though! Might pinch that this year.

We have Christmas Eve dinner at lunchtime ,might be later if DH is working but he might have a half day
Fish in breadcrumbs for DS. Vegetarian grills or Tivalli escalopes for us if I can find them. Triple cooked chips. Dips .fresh salsa .
Then in the evening some sandwiches, cake, coffee.
If I eat too late I get heartburn (sad) but the whole eating early started when they were little and we wanted to go out with them in the afternoon.

Vegetable lasagne will be in the freezer for a quiet day (CBA to cook day) when I'm back at work

All family come to me xmas eve.

we have a shellfish platter, steak dinner, and a shop brought pud like black forest gateaux.

Then it's a nice long walk looking at all the neighbours christmas lights, midnight mass and back to mine again for mulled wine, homemade sausage rolls and chutneys.

We do a lovely meat and cheese board with crusty baguettes, nice crisps, coleslaw and potato salad all washed down wirth a glass (or two!) of rose wine. We watch the musical version of Scrooge with Albert Finney whilst we eat. It has become a lovely tradition at this point.

Twiglets and port

Chilliandbanana · 15/10/2025 10:34

Nigella’s chilli with rice or jacket potatoes. Easy and loved by the whole family.

AzurePanda · 15/10/2025 10:38

Ottolenghi butternut squash, Stilton and membrillo quiche with a winter salad. It’s nice to be able to do it ahead, it is vegetarian (before the meat feast the next day) and it’s Christmassy.

Also liked baked Camembert with warm dates and almonds on top.

A takeaway, either Chinese, curry, KFC or pizza whichever gets the majority vote. Last year was a Chinese takeaway. Love Christmas Eve.

MaudL · 15/10/2025 11:05

In recent years, a side of miso salmon with noodles and pickled greens has been a real favourite. It's our last chance to have some clean, crisp, fresh flavours for a few days, so we usually avoid Christmassy food on Christmas Eve!

MonkeyTennis34 · 15/10/2025 11:27

We usually have a side of salmon, dauphinoise potatoes (thank you M and S) and some greens.
This year we might have some seafood too.
Christmas Eve is my favourite day of the season.
I used to but the DCs PJs when they were younger…not sure what I’ll get them this year. They’ll be 17 and 19.

LeopardsANeutral · 15/10/2025 11:34

The 5 and 6 year olds will want a mcdonalds - their favourite! And we'll have a camembert with crusty bread, veggies, other bits for dipping, deli meats maybe, some chocolates and a glass or two of something fizzy when they've gone to bed!

Silverpaws · 15/10/2025 11:36

Ramen soup with miso, veg, tofu. Feels special, is light and delicious ahead of the calorie onslaught.

Starlight1984 · 15/10/2025 11:50

Chinese or Indian takeaway. After Christmas Day we have leftovers for days (including cheese, pates, seafood etc) so no way am I having British on Christmas Eve too 😂

StewkeyBlue · 15/10/2025 11:52

A prime rib of beef.
And all the trimmings
Trifle

We have a chestnut and shredded brussel sprout risotto. It’s a lots nicer than it sounds, the sprouts are added raw at the end so are mustardy and peppery!

Oh that sounds ideal! Cosy and simple yet festive!

When DC were small they always insisted on spaghetti bolognese for Christmas eve as it was their favourite dinner. Then one of them turned vegetarian. Now we have veggie spaghetti bolognese on Christmas Eve - with black lentils and aubergine. DH makes it. DC (adults) love it

Can you pm me a recipe?

Therealjudgejudy · 15/10/2025 11:55

Either macaroni cheese, or an Indian takeaway. With plenty of fizz

Fridayismyfunday · 15/10/2025 11:56

I always cook a large gammon. Then I can serve it along with cold turkey on Boxing day with a buffet.

I do this too, with lots of red cabbage to be reheated with Christmas dinner and subsequently and a big dish of pommes dauphinoise which can be reheated on Boxing Day. Lots of things where the leftovers keep well to save cooking over the post Christmas days. Leeks in cheese sauce also popular.

MagpiePi · 15/10/2025 11:57

As I'm on my own I generally have a bag of honey roast peanuts and a bag of chilli peanuts mixed up together, and a good bottle of spiced rum to hand.

TheJustJoker · 15/10/2025 11:58

Always have a picky tea/buffet. Nice cheeses, dips, breads, olives and nice M&S snacks. Hangover from when my sons lived at home. Everyone, me included, preferred this over Xmas dinner. Can’t be arsed with Xmas day dinner so just graze what’s left over from Xmas eve. Stress free.

Not too bad Magpie!

NotQuiteUsual · 15/10/2025 12:19

For us it's inevitably mcdonalds. Christmas Eve is ds's birthday and on your birthday you pick the tea.

flowerpowers25 · 15/10/2025 12:28

We always have something with fish - eg linguine with prawns or (usually) fish pie.

I'd love to have a Chinese or Indian takeaway though :)
