His birthday is also the week before Christmas, so could do with finding something for that:

We bought him a bike this summer as we wanted to teach him to ride a bike (he now can and is very good.) He has a Tonie box for his bedroom and a mini Yoto player for out and about. He has a ride on tractor and our garden has a massive outdoor play area. And a trampoline.

I don’t know what to get him. I’ve seen a toy Land Rover with a trailer I think he’d like but any other ideas welcomed.

You've set the bar high early on. At that age mine got books, nice pyjamas, crafty stuff. We had the year of the remote control dinosaur.

Teachingagain · 26/09/2025 06:27

What does he like doing?

My 6 year old has been after a skateboard for while.

4daysoff · 26/09/2025 06:34

You mention what he has
You don’t mention what he enjoys

Arewethebadguys · 26/09/2025 06:34

Agree with pp, he has loads already so maybe start to scale down or he could end up overwhelmed.

Snorlaxo · 26/09/2025 06:35

If he has everything then maybe keep it simple or focus on experiences.

Has he been to the cinema? Have you considered going away for the night (my ds loved staying in hotels)

Does he like construction sets?

chuzzlewitthechipmunk · 26/09/2025 06:38

Probably tone it down a bit, presents dont have to be big! You’re entering the Lego era…

Neither of my two have ever shown even a whiff of interest for Lego. Now teens

PenelopeRadish · 26/09/2025 07:00

At age 6 my son’s favourite gift was a real small spade (metal, about 3 foot long) as he loves to dig! It’s awesome at the beach

He enjoys our piano too so maybe try a small electric keyboard and a Learn To Play Piano book if you don’t want an entire piano in your house?

He also loved Lego kits (especially supercars).

Oh and a decent pair of hiking boots, a pair of binoculars and a compass; he got a lot of use from those but may depend where you live. This year he has some Timberlands he likes a lot.

steponme · 26/09/2025 07:54

A lot of the above is just wanting to be critical for the sake of it. I don’t think I know anybody who hasn’t got their child a bike by now! And trampolines are pushed on here to the point that I wonder if MN have shares in them! In any event, neither the tractor nor the trampoline were bought by us. The trampoline actually belonged to the people who lived in the house before us.

Lego is a good shout. I don’t care especially about things being ‘big’ but equally I don’t want to buy things for the sake of buying. I genuinely don’t think a nearly five year old having a bike, a screen free device to listen to when travelling and a screen free device to listen to at home and some play equipment in the garden is evident of great luxury and overwhelming presents!

Yes I think you need to start getting smaller if anything - I know it’s difficult with an Xmas birthday and generous grandparents too!
Maybe get the Landrover as a main gift but then just some nice smaller presents like books, clothes, a small Lego set, craft stuff etc. I say this purely because you either do that or set the bar impossibly high for yourself in the future (and start going for tech when you ideally would have waited).
A goal may also be good, maybe a special football (PL one) if he might get into footy?

I see the opposite with tramplines. They’re not recommended until 6.

The size or expense of gift for a child is irrelevant. The level of joy they get from it is more important.

Namechangeforthis88 · 26/09/2025 07:58

Yes, 5 year olds have bikes, but the list you gave makes it sound like you're only considering big ticket gifts.

People are suggesting it can get difficult to keep coming up with big ticket gifts for birthday and Christmas.

Yamamm · 26/09/2025 07:58

I got mine a Radio Flyer trolley at that age. Got years of fun out of it.

Oh you sensitive soul 😆

which posts have been “wanting to be critical for the sake of it”?!

DaveWatts · 26/09/2025 09:11

I'm probably getting a cardboard modelling set for my 5yo - they have great tools at makedo and beaverbot. Was also thinking about a kids camera as she loves taking photos.

saltnpepperchips · 26/09/2025 09:14

How about a scooter or roller skates?

saltnpepperchips · 26/09/2025 09:16

smyths sell a table top air hockey/table football set which might go down well. Also games such as hungry hippo

PermanentTemporary · 26/09/2025 09:19

Kerplunk. Genuinely.

Frostynoman · 26/09/2025 09:20

Remote controlled car/landrover/monster truck?

Are you talking about a toy lander? I’d wait for the birthday for that for both weather and maturity reasons.

bydwraigwrthymor · 26/09/2025 09:22

Membership to something- zoo membership was a great gift at that age.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 26/09/2025 09:23

Glow in the dark skeleton pyjamas.
A massive fave for my DS aged six, so much so that I then had to get him a pair each year til he was 14! 😂

Growlybear83 · 26/09/2025 09:26

Dont five year olds play with action figures, cars, space toys, and board games any more? I always tried to get toys thst were a bit smaller in size for storage, but more so to encourage imaginative play. None of my daughter’s friends had bikes before they were five.

NameChange30 · 26/09/2025 09:28

My youngest just turned 5. A kids' camera has been a huge hit (and was also a hit with my oldest at the same age). The Vtech Kiddizoom Duo FX, it's a bargain on Amazon atm.

Other ideas:
a scooter (my 5yo has both bike and scooter)
remote control car
magnatiles - these are loads of fun and get played with for years before they're outgrown
lego if he's into it
colouring and craft stuff
card and board games - my 5yo loves Go Fish and UNO atm
if you don't have Hungry Hippos or Pop-up Pirate yet, they're classics!

Agree with the camera, that's still a big hit here and he's almost 7. The other thing going strong from about that age are the national geographic light up stomp rockets, they're brilliant for December birthdays as it gets dark early enough that you can go to the park (or garden if yours is big enough, ours isn't) and set them off. We took hot chocolate in a flask and made a whole evening of it when DS1 first got them.

NameChange30 · 26/09/2025 10:10

Ooh light up stomp rockets sound fun for Christmas or a winter birthday!
